- mournsanity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21The Tango Fridays page with a list of all of the icons:
http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Fridays - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Tango and Oxygen are two very distinctive looks. Merging them into one would be a bad idea in terms of aesthetics. Besides, I'm pretty sure both the KDE and Gnome factions prefer to distinguish the look of their environments from their competitors environment.
- goblindegook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14For one thing, you can run Linux on the PS3.
- DeadPain, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20"his will get rid of a LOT of ugly icons still plaguing the GNOME desktop!"
# of ugly icons = 193 - diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12193 sounds like a lot, but many of them will be redundant. For example, the GTK_STOCK_GO_BACK is just an arrow and GTK_STOCK_GOTO_TOP is the same arrow with a line above it. Plus the Tango artists are design monkeys on crack :) When they say they'll get em done, then they will be done well.

digg click != article click - slalomskier, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1451 diggs, page down. Lets get a digg cache going here. The digg effect is getting worse and worse.
- mournsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Yes. You don't know how annoying and out of place some of those old icons look in an otherwise beautiful desktop. This has been a long time coming.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Probably mostly for fun, but it's part of a larger effort to have icons for specific devices so that when you, for example, plug in your pink iPod nano, the icon actually will be of a pink iPod nano, not just an iPod, or even the default for a disk drive.
- monger68, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Did this really warrant a "HOLY CRAP"?
- BHSPitMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Learn to use that [reply] button in the thread you're trying to respond to. Kthx.
- Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well, since Tango has a set of guidelines saying how everything is supposed to look I think it will turn out fine.
- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11it's not GTK, which is a widget tool kit, that is being changed. The Tango project is just replacing many outdated default Gnome icons.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yes, but is he going to do 193 popsicle-stick creations _in one day_?
- mournsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have linked to the blog.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sorry for the comment abuse, but I want to encourage anyone with artistic skill to join up on Friday, check the #tango channel on freenode. That's a lot of icons, the more people helping, the merrier.
- mournsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@monger68:
No. - Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think Oxygen icons are pretty, but Tango has a different look almost completely. I personally prefer Tango and think they appear more professional
- sukimashita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Some of that information is possible to retrieve. Linux is transparently using HAL for that, which is a reason why those device icons are created in the first place. Plug-in your hardware and get a specific icon instead of a disk icon or similar.
- notjamt9000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How does the OS know what colour the iPod is? Is it stored on the device? And for the PS3, in which circumstances is it used? Can Linux currently connect to a PS3?
(Oops should have been a reply) - Latka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I didn't digg the article, though I did read it."
That tells you that the digg effect has nothing to do with amount of diggs then. - diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6To see the list of icons being replaced, go here http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/gtk/gtk-Stock-Items.html and scroll down to the bottom. BIG overhaul of the most fundamental icons of Gnome!
- notjamt9000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What is the PS3 icon for?
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/computer-gaming-sony-ps3.png - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I imagine you can extract the color information from the serial number.
/wild guess
As for the PS3, I have no idea. But hey, why not have an icon for the PS3? :D - alexmipego, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Linux runs on PS3.
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-25,GGGL:pt&q=Linux+PS3
So maybe instead of "My Computer" you get a "My PS3" with a brand new custom icon? - crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look at the link that was posted up above... a lot of them are pretty fugly.
- shanesemler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think the Tango project is great and I use the icons myself but I don't think the older stock Gnome stock icons are ugly. In fact, I've always liked them.
- fishie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn you guys are beasts..
- sd11208, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1www.papercitation.com
very nice. - terog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I like Tango icons. It's a very good icon set for system level icons.
However, I don't see the point of changing the original application icons, like the icon for Realplayer. It's like modifying somebody else's Logo. And you can't "Tangofy" all of them anyway, so it'd be more consistent to keep the original icons for applications.
OTOH, the original icons of many open source programs (e.g. mplayer, gftp) suck big time, so in that way it's good actually. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5HOLY CRAP: They make nice icons, but 193 in one day makes me think alot towards the end of the day will look a little, well, like crap.
- slalomskier, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I didn't digg the article, though I did read it.
- democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5THANK YOU. I love Gnome, but the default Gtk look is just...ugh.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Gotta say, I'm a huge fan of the Tango icon set. It manages to make GNOME actually look like something from this century.
My favorite is the Rythmbox icon - http://hagen.let.rug.nl/s1547615/tango/rythmbox.png - wooptoo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Tango vs. Oxygen is something like BeOS icons vs Mac OS X icons. They're both great, although i prefer Tango icons (w/Gnome) for their pixel-perfect graphics, but i'm sure Oxygen will make a lot of Gnome users jealous.
- markp93, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Their site appears to be Tango Uniform....
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Dammit I was expecting hot Argentinian dancers.
- BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I see what you did there!
- threeandout, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Holy Crap: Billy tries to build a house out of popsicle sticks by recess... next on Digg!
- yourdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2please do not use uppercase in the title, and not your lame "HOLY CRAP" ever again
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3193 in one day, and you wonder why linux looks so bad.
- monger68, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0They are just icons. Can we all agree on that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Absolutely not. Their icons for craps sake...not a breakthrough in the grand unification theory.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5Maybe a get-together with Oxygen? Plenty of room for merging where artwork is considered 'ugly'.
- aks123, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3This is one of the geekiest stories I've ever read on Digg.
