- Recuso, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30Now I just need a ps3...
[I'm so getting dugg down] - afeitarse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Yes, why fully utilize the features of a system you paid for? Craziness, I tell you!!
- campusten, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23"Because it makes perfect sense to spent a TON of money on a console just to install a free operating system."
Oh, for some reason I heard that the ps3 can also play video games. I must have been mistaken. - Elfman, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23Exactly!
Why would you want to do this when you could spend the same $600 on a much more powerful computer and install the same free OS. The guide itself says:
"So what can you do here now that you have installed this beast? Well, unless you want to write your first novel or make a spreadsheet of all your time spent playing video games, pretty much nothing that you can’t do with the Dashboard. As of right now, I have yet to be able to install really any applications that would be of any use."
Linux + PS3 = Why? - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3566989/YDL_5.0_PS3_-_Yellow_Dog_Linux_v5.0_for_the_PLAYSTATION_3

Why spend time "Trying" to hate on something you can't do or a product you dont want/ dont have the money for. - srfrogger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The ignorance is strong in this thread.
- boscorelle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7a...piracy....would be a good guess
personally a linux media PC/PS3 sounds pretty cool
we'll see - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I got The Fifth Element free with my ps3, I think that's a pretty good movie.
- taintparty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9You can literally hear the confusion from the Digg community.
"Linux good.... Sony bad...... so confused....."
Digg might suddenly implode if Apple and Sony had Chinese slaves make a Linux distribution that runs on the iPhone and is packed full of DRM and endorsed by Kevin Rose, James Kim, and Bill Gates. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's the inferiority complex that everyone seems to have when it comes to game consoles.
Message to everyone: your Wii, 360, or PS3 is not a religion. You can stop with the attacks now. - Lycander, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The real problem is that there are too many "x86 only" Linux binaries floating around.
Supposedly there's an Nvidia graphics driver. Great. How about an official Flash plugin? One that PPCnix users don't even have yet.
The best reason I can think of (for now) why someone would want to install Linux on a PS3 is to run the protein folding F@H client and rack up big points. - Heatseeker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Because it makes perfect sense to spent a TON of money on a console just to install a free operating system."
This is totally true, but who here is saying to run out and buy a PS3 JUST to install a free OS on it? Wow, just wow. The whole point of this story is flying over a lot of people's heads. You're right, it's stupid to buy a PS3 just to install Linux and SNES games, but the main purpose is for the few people who actually enjoying their PS3 instead of ebaying it. - cvweiss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How long until I can install Gentoo on the PS3?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You already can.
- chawkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The reason that I did it to my PS3 is...well there really is no reason. It's just one of those things that sounded cool, and really never having played around with Linux, I figured I would give it a shot. Sure there is really no reason at this point to do it. It is kind of slow and writing office docs on the big screen isn't that thrilling, but having done it do I regret it?
No.
For me, half the fun of doing these kind of things is the process itself, not neccessarily using it. That is why I kept my PSP and will keep Linux on my PS3 to see what happens. Who knows, maybe this will be able to do cool things in the future. Plus its just 10 GB on the hard drive that I am not really using anyway. Didn't mess up my system. Everything still works as it should. - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2out of interest, what WM is being used? that launcher bar thing looks neat.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe that's e17, the still in development next version of enlightenment.
- GMorgan, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2It would actually be quite hard to break it. Some people have talked of bricking the machine. They clearly know little or nothing about computers. Installing an OS in no way can brick this sort of machine by installing Linux. You touch nothing crucial to the system, all hardware access is via a hypervisor.
Now what could brick it is the eventual firmware releases that will mod the hypervisor to give full hardware access to Linux. Whether its an official release or a third party one. - PhoenixCE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I'm glad they gave me props for writing it up. But that's the v1.0 of the guide. v1.1 has an edit that I put in later that I forgot to include that you needed to type Xautoconfig after you install the rpm file. That's what you get when writing a guide after a long day at work :P
- chadwn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Not to mention high definition movies
- iampoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1plus the fact that you can install another OS gives he PS3 more expandability. I'm eyeing it as a HTHDPC alternative. Too bad you can't replace the BluRay drive with a rewriter, but, hey that's what external writers are for.
- rbtopp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@smeagel
A) To bad you can only use one core in linux because of the hyper visor which is about as fast as a 500mhz Pentium 3
B)Maybe you can use the bluray player but since you only have access to one core theres no way your gonna watch high def video in linux
C)Sony got the video card locked down thru a hyper visor so that you won't be able to play any games besides some old school emulators in linux - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wiimotes work in Linux(or on the verge anyway) and the ps3 has bluetooth.
Done and Done. - Marijuana, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Same, I'm in love with Leeloo.
- Johannesrexx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Reasons to load Linux on a PS3
- cool factor
- because it is supported and so it's a great way to learn more about Linux
- because XBOX 360 can't do it. - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is one of those things you do just because you can do it. Or because it makes it easier to pirate Blu-ray disks.
Because otherwise, Linux on the PS3 just doesn't make sense. You have a $600 machine (as if you paid that little for it) with a slowed down 3.2GHz PowerPC (they've removed several things like branch prediction from it to reduce die space) and a meager 192MB of working RAM once you're in Linux. You can use the SPE floating point engines only if you're writing your own software to do so - don't expect any 'off the shelf' code to do so.
So what you have is a very slow, very expensive Linux machine. Where's the sense in that? Unless you're going to be writing custom floating point crunching apps or you just want to show people that your PS3 can do /something/ when you're tired of playing Resistance on it. Or you can run old video game system emulators on it just like you an with a PS2, XBox, or PSP. Wheeee. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Linux just put out a PS3-optimized version, didn't they? So what's the problem?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@Elfman:
Can you post a link to an HD-capable, silent running machine that will cost $500 and run as a Mythtv frontend? No? Coz they don't exist. - roprot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
First of all, as a coder, I think its wonderful that we are able to put Linux on the PS3. The SPE's represent a very nice new platform for hacking interesting code on, and as such this is worth a $600 investment - to me, as a coder.
Sure, as a vegetative gamer/consumer, its not all that exciting - though of course, being able to run OpenOffice on the living-room computer on a rather large HD display is not without its benefits to grandma. Don't overlook how useful that is, actually, to a lot of people. I for sure would consider getting rid of the ol' "cheap PC in the corner that only does word processing and Internet, while collecting nasty dust piles" and replacing it with the 'comfy-chair oriented bigscreen living-room system that does everything while granny watches TV', incidentally, quite a lot easier to keep clean and comfy (god I hate those beige-box hovels most PC users live in.. you PC gollums need to clean up, yo!)
But getting back to the point of all this: Linux on PS3 is a coders haven. I write music software for a living - having a platform that is as commonly available as the PS3 for my efforts is a very viable new realm. I can write code that puts those SPE's to great use in generating new synthesis algorithms, for example. I could make the PS3 a viable and affordable (by music-industry standards) new effects processor/plugin realm for my studio musicians. It most certainly has the guts to push some serious polyphony, no question about it, and as far as I'm concerned any machine which promotes a movement *away* from the beige-box hovel and into a more streamlined, user-accessible system is a positive factor.
So, count me in. As soon as I can walk into a local retailer and get a PS3, I will do so. And that very day, I'll crack it open, put Linux on it, and begin coding synths, effects, plugins and sequencers for it that make it a creative tool worth using to make something, not just do something.. and I think this is Sony's point.
I think Sony want us to hack, and hack we shall. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm sure the 360 could be made to do it or even the Wii (you could stick Linux on a SD card and load into a RAM disc upon boot). It's just the PS3 has been designed to do this more or less.

...wow... - PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Q: Why are people putting linux on ah PS3?
A: This $600 peace of crap sucks as a game consol. So as you do with an out dated computer....You put Linux on it (No offence to Linux, - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Too bad my 800mhz P3 runs linux better then PS3.

Lets all go out and buy a $600 PS3 so we can play SNES games..... - Salival, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Wow, i have finally reached the age where I dont care. Run X on an X, way cooler in the 90's.
- smeagel, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4@Elfman:
$600 to get a much more powerful machine?
Perhaps you're not familiar with A) The cost of a cell processor, B) The cost of a Blu-Ray (which probably isn't accessible via linux yet, but will be), or C) Their video card.
You can't get a computer anywhere close to as fast for $600. That aside, still seems silly. - sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0plenty on ebay via scalpers. oh, you mean an affordable ps3? hmm yea good luck with that.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Not sure how thats possible because the PS3's sixaxis controller doesn't know its position in space while the Wii's does. Its probably another great move on Nintendo's behalf because even if the Wii games are ripped and emulated, playing then will suck because you have to use analog settings which won't match Wii motion controls exactly.
I would wait for "Official" support of Liinux on the PS3 by Sony before I attempt doing it. I once followed a guide word-for-word on how to install Linux on the iPod, and it effed up my iPod royally. Almost had to write it off until a last ditch effort to restore it worked. Last time I try to install Linux on anything but a real computer. An online guide is no guarantee that Linux will run or work on whatever device someone else got it to run on. - supershawn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2How about a guide to FINDING a PS3 to buy first!!???
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6there are only 48 of us?
- quakefiend, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I got 4 ps3's .. but they all went on ebay.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Because of lack people wanting one, I am told that Dodgeville Wisconsin not far from where i live has 6 in stock ready to sell
- giveer, on 11/13/2007, -8/+3All this kind of stuff impresses me --- not because I give a rat's about Linux - but if I spent 700+ bucks on something that's hard to get one's hands on, I'd never have the balls to start f*cking around with it. Not in the first couple of years anyway.
Besides the fact that more people have dugg this story than PS3 owners have even seen it- but who's counting? - mthanded, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1This is only useful if i can play my wii games on the PS3...You all know its true
- TheGilmanator, on 11/13/2007, -17/+11This story is here specifically for the 48 of you who managed to get a PS3 and didn't sell it on eBay.
