- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39Wow! If true (and the g-phone ain't proprietary), then this is pretty big. BTW, OpenMoko is a huge hit. Yesterday Bruce had the following to say:
OpenMoko Developer Preview Sold Out After Unexpected Demand
,----[ Quote ]
| OpenMoko, the first Open Source cell phone, has sold out the entire planned
| production run for the device's developer preview after unexpected demand.

- nullity, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19I just had an OpenSourcegasm.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11everyone having it is a good idea, just so long as it doesn't become controlled by fascists ala apple products.
- Avian00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Makes a lot more sense than the other rumor that Google will use Ubuntu.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Ubuntu, but why would Google do all the work that OpenMoko has done already to create a Mobile Linux platform? - pictureDIGGER, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It could open the door to open source technology in the hands of every spoiled 12 year old, not that they will use it to the full extent, but that is huge for open source on a popularity level. I understand where you are coming from, but in the end it could change the way cell phones operate.
My mother just bought a RAZR from Verizon with all that embedded DRM and *****. I begged her not to get it for the sake of my time being wasted hacking it so it could be used the way Motorola wanted it to work. She got it, and here I am installing some drivers I will never use again, just to get into it. I have to show her how to do it to get mp3's on it that are not purchased through Verizon. And they don't even let you get rid of the ugly orange front lcd screen in the options on the phone, you have to hack the phone just for something that little.

Google, do this for my MOTHER! - bradleyland, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6"There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: the fashionable non-conformist.: -- Ayn Rand

- stupergenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Could I get the source to that? I'd like to compile it into my kernel if you don't mind.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It's great news if it means Google's going to bring a developer or two to the project, it can use all of the help they can get at this point.
- GarrickAnson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5The guy who posted the article about the Neo1973 being sold out retracted his statement and said they were only "close" to being sold out.
You may still be able to pick one up.
I would wait till October though. - Scyth3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I really want a neo, just so I can start developing on it (I've always wanted to work on smaller devices). However, they're sold out :'(
- pictureDIGGER, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I can't find any top level comment by seraph82, so in his defense, at least he knows how to use the comment system.
- ronin691, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Keep your eye out for an order of GMS radio chips that run on 700Mhz and fit into the OpenMoko board, right after the conclusion of the spectrum auction.
- pcghost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why does October 10th seem like a year away? iPhone FTL

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Indie Rock Pete, is that you?
- ronin691, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sir, the Neo is an Engineering handset, made solely for development. Modern, "sleek" handsets similar to the ones all the carriers currently offer will be available in October. I urge you to participate in what the final consumer handset will look like at openmoko.com
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2CDMA sucks monkey ballz. It basically locks you down to a ***** provider. with GSM you can easily switch and its better when you travel internationally. CDMA roaming in Asia and Europe = Mega Fail
- gandhii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yea.. it is just a rumor... but, openmoko is far enough along that they say they're making their first consumer phone with it this fall. Granted, a google phone would be wanting a fair amount of software that is more developed than that.. but that means a release goal of next year. Which is reasonable, since the rumor only talks about "Google is looking to team up with OpenMoko".. not that they have yet.
- Aninhumer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure they'd want to use GSM on a new band.
If you're going to have to make a new chip anyway, why use an older tech?
I would have thought WiMax or similar would be where they're heading. - Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you shouldn't have bothered. You should have left it in it's pitiful state, then told her to make sure she listens to your advice in future!

- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1if not, they are shipping more sept. 10th, order now...
- nullcodes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If true, this is great. Are we near the era of custom commodity phones? And who will be the Dell of phones? If I build my own, I'm going to put a 1024 pixel LCD on mine. Oh, and Live Video Share of course.
- gandhii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1unfortunately .. there aren't many national level GSM options in the USA. As far as I've been able to see, only AT&T/Cingular fill that void or hold that monopoly (depending on how you want to look at it).
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I just checked the site and it seems they still have some available.
- tacojohn48, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Amazingly I am in the exact same spot. Stuck with a small selection of phones, but can't complain because my parents are paying for it.
- Wireddd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the openmoko store says that they are sold out

Wrong, the number 1 search appliance on the market is the google appliance and as a consumer, I must say that they know wtf they are doing. The workmanship on my appliance is bar none. - stupergenius, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Apple is the new *agent* Orange.
- aydchery, on 10/04/2008, -1/+1gPhone concepts :
http://gphonegoogle.blogspot.com/ - geekelixir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0is openmoko portable to other devices.. example htc's etc thats the real quesiton. Cause from what i understand google isn't making a phone persay but working on a mobile platform / operating system. Who's foundation comes from a company they bought called android who had a hand in developing danger's sidekick...
the operating system will be portable to other devices? and freely distributed i assume based on the fact that google really wants you to user their offered services which will more than likely be tied into the operating system. so the more devices it can go on the betteer for google over all
Sorry for the long comment =_=; - kfk2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0So you're gonna go with a 32x32 pixel screen... pretty impressive ;-)
- sanderscm2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1It sucks that there is no way this will be cdma...
Then again, i guess i can't complain about my service since mom and dad still pay for it - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Compiling is for losers. Get binaries instead.
- jpetrov, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0potp, you obviously can not see the eroticism of compiling by hand. :)

PICS or iIT DIDNT HAPPEN. - EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3gPhone? Are kidding? What are we going to call Google's Super String theory?
- elviento, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0I don't beleive in gPhone either. First of all, Google should become a telco itself.
- bias, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Jeez, have you guys seen any real cell phone at all? Neo1973 is totally butt fugly.
- dev3, on 10/10/2007, -9/+5*****! I'm not against the OpenMoko. I love it. I love the way it looks and freedom it will offer me. But I am a little bit selfish and wanted it as a symbol of my geekeness. Now if Google comes up with this, It might become ubiquitous and hyped. Every one will have it. Hence I don't think it's a good Idea.
- tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -9/+4I don't care what they do. Show me a prototype!
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1This is just a rumor and I doubt it is true. The openmoko platform is still in its early stages and I don't see how google could commit to using it at this point.
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2@seraph82 -- and you're a tool.
