- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -2/+33Go go google gadget!
- Dohko_Xar, on 07/26/2008, -0/+10Having widgets on your desktop = fail
Having widgets on a widget layer accessible with one keystroke = productive - chicken101, on 07/26/2008, -6/+15I used this a few weeks ago on my ubuntu box. A lot of the gadgets just don't work, specifically the facebook one. Then I realized that gadgets are a dumb idea, and that I would never actually get into using them.
- Ratatosk, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5I can't wait till this is fully working:) Too bad that not all gadgets are working yet, but that's why it's still 0.10
- kleverness, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5I'll start using them when they are fully integrated with plasma, probably in KDE 4.2. The Google team is apparently working on it :)
http://groups.google.com/group/google-gadgets-for- ... - Roger, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5Why did they stop updating Google Desktop? There haven't been any new features in a long time.
- klitzbtc, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4I'd really like the see a fully working calendar gadget. Then I can finally kiss Sunbird goodbye.
- klitzbtc, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4Do you use Compiz for your widget layer? I'm looking for alternatives on gnome.
- kwilliam, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4No, lots of people don't dig desktop widgets. But others do. (And like Dohko_Xar said, if you can momentarily summon them with a shortcut key, that makes them more useful.)
- Shmock, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4You're a tool.
Linux is generally the stablest operating system. - ethana2, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3To be fair, I like the idea of a gadget because it kinda discourages over complicating things, you know? You just need this one little function here or there and you can get it.
- Elvaanish, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4I personally love google desktop, for both windows and linux. Miles ahead of XP's search tool, and customizeable enough for even die-hard customization fans. Gagets are handy IMO, thats where I keep my feed reader in XP, and weather and such is always nice at a glance. Don't be hatin'!
- skyshock1, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5Am I the only one that doesn't dig desktop widgets AT ALL? They just make everything look so... cluttered. I can't get ENOUGH screen real estate for my windows as it is, I certainly don't need a flashing snow globe in the corner that tells time and gives me scrolling stock quotes and baseball scores.

Uncheck the entire technology section. - totorototoro, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3Best thing about these will be the cross-pollination with desktop widgets and mini-webapps for Android phones. Looking forward to seeing what people can come up with.
- klitzbtc, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3I can't quite wrap my mind around a sentence that puts "XP" and "work" in the same context.
- Dohko_Xar, on 07/26/2008, -2/+4Google's employees have 20% of their time free to work on whatever project they feel like. This is what that 20% produces.
- mohtasham, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2gnome applets are the best widgets in my opinion. The system monitor one is one of the main reason I don't want to switch to kde. Personally, I prefer simplicity.
- sx66gns, on 07/26/2008, -3/+5GUBUNTU PLEASE!!
- davidron, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Why not just install Prism and use it to open http://www.google.com/calendar?
- ethana2, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2me neither. I remember when I installed an antivirus and windows invalidated its own installation license.
Then it dawned on me. WHY?!
....I think that's what drove me to Ubuntu before my hardware was supported. Now of course it all Just Works, and I'm a happy man. - Ratatosk, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2well first of all: this article is about google gadgets for linux... that's a different product than google desktop for linux...
and the concept of searching: well, hiting ctrl-ctrl and typing "hist" and hiting enter if you want to open "history of linux.odf" is faster than going to nautilus and browse for it (even if you know where it is) or go to OOo writer and hit open and then browse for it (that's be so last century) - klitzbtc, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Actually I tested the calendar gadget with this Google Dock, and it works relatively well, just sometimes it deselects my calendar and I just have to go into the options and recheck it.
Beyond that this app is already great, barely touches the CPU or Mem, and provides a lot of great gadgets. It's officially replaced gDesktlets for me. - donna1234, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1Since version 2 came out in 2005, Google Desktop for Windows has included a sidebar that users can fill with screen gadgets

what if i want to find emails, documents and web pages with occurence of the words "cisco 2821 ios 12.5.15t4" that are on my computer (or network shares), because i need to find a particular document that i remember reading.
you need a fully indexing search facility for this. this is a common use of desktop search in my everyday office life. I need to find references to bug reports or maybe some info i wrote in an pdf doc, but it could be in one of many folders, we are not looking for file names but data within a file. - jamezracer, on 07/26/2008, -4/+4why are you wasting your time on this google? neat concept, but rly not useful.in the time you spent fiddling with the widgets, you could have completed the task you actually needed to do. I already have the time and weather in the corner of my screen, it's called gnome clock. most distros have a search/indexing service, even though you rly should never use it as a properly organized file system makes it simple to find things. Please focus more on things like android which I'm desperately waiting to be released on a production phone.
- addicted68098, on 07/26/2008, -3/+3Am I the only one who doesn't completely understand the concept of searching...on Linux it is very easy to find system files and I think most people keep their documents organized.
- suzhe, on 08/09/2008, -0/+0Google Gadgets for Linux 0.10.1 was released. Many bugs have been fixed in this release. Some popular gadgets, like facebook and Google Calendar gadgets, run without problem now.
- mohtasham, on 07/27/2008, -1/+1Instead of making stupid gadgets for Linux, they have to put some easy to work Linux distro in their google desktop application list.
- OrCohen, on 08/06/2008, -0/+0check out my ubuntu desktop with google gadgets.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/orcohen/2723532108/ - GNUbalance, on 07/29/2008, -0/+0As for loadable gadgets onto my desktop i will stick with the screenlets I have on my GNOME desktop. I run compiz, so clutter isn't really an issue. I just rotate my desktop to another workspace to see all the pertinent screenlets I have installed and then rotate back to my clean workspace. Works like a charm.
But I do love google earth....very slick.
and gmail.... the list goes on - ethana2, on 07/27/2008, -2/+1Ok Google, that's great.
...sketchup....
....sketchup...
..bueller.. - ethana2, on 07/27/2008, -1/+0Stable enough when weighed against its features, anyway. Although the Sun and BSD folks make all their claims, and I don't think stability counts without hardware support. OSX is stable? That's nearly worthless to me! (actually, I may just get an EFI bootloader and dual boot it with ubuntu on my inspiron 1420n, but generally speaking, that's the case.)
- gradivus, on 07/26/2008, -7/+2I hope one of them is XP so the damn thing will work.
- godinster, on 07/26/2008, -8/+1Can someone explain to me how to COMPLETELY filter out Linux and Apple stuff? I didn't mind before when it was one or two articles on the front page but really, this is just the vocal minority who seem to have control of the front page; the vast majority of people, myself included, couldn't care less about Linux or iPhones. I tried unchecking Linux and Apple from my filter, but it doesn't seem to be working.
