- Shootfast, on 10/15/2007, -0/+19Ubuntu is a live cd, no-one can make the decision for you. Just pop the cd in, restart your computer and try it out without any threat of damaging your current install
- cdawzrd, on 10/14/2007, -2/+12Good stuff!
- crestfall, on 10/14/2007, -1/+8An install often works much more smoothly and completely than the live CD. I started by pulling out my win drive and popping in an ultra-cheap drive from ebay. Found out everything worked, put the win drive back in, and then created a separate partition for ubuntu, installing GRUB on my MBR. The partitioning and stuff is scary at first, but follow the instructions in the Ubuntu guide, ask questions at ubuntuforums.org, and you will be fine. If you don't like partitioning, just keep 2 drives in there. You'll still need GRUB (so you can boot either OS) - just install it on your MBR. You'll have to reinstall with both drives in if you do the swap drive test i mentioned
- CrucifiedEgo, on 10/14/2007, -2/+8Slicehost is awesome. All my production apps are on slices, and I couldn't be happier -- mainly because of things like this, the staff recognizes that it's unmanaged, but are honest and let the community build rockin documentation.
@solidsnake1298: Ubuntu as a server is based on debian(The box that served you the page you're reading now is a debian machine) but with more up-to-date packages. What's so bad about that? - spiderfish, on 10/14/2007, -2/+7gotta say, slicehost rocks
- cronky, on 10/15/2007, -1/+6I find howtoforge (http://www.howtoforge.com/) is pretty useful for this kind of stuff.
- rocknroll4ever, on 10/14/2007, -7/+10 Can anyone offer me some good advice. I am sort of new at all this computer stuff. Right now I am using Winows 2000. Is it a good idea for me to switch to Ubuntu ? Any hepl would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance to all who respond !
- rieuwa, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3If this is for non-geeks, I'd be scared to see what they put our for geeks...
- kidd3ckz, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the status report.
- Memitim, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Because they are intimately familiar with it already? I'll grant you that there are some that are better by default but any Linux distro can make a great server once it is configured properly.
- HonoredMule, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Is there something particularly wrong with the server version of Ubuntu?
- Plotinus, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2It's not an either or situation, as indicated above by Shootfast. You can also go to the following web address (URL) to install a dual boot debian system (debian is the underlying distribution of Ubuntu): http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com
You do need some room on your hard drive to install debian but you will end up with a system where you can choose either windows or linux (debian). Then you can have both, once you are comfortable with linux you can, if you want, make the switch. - smoothmoniker, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2who needs a mirror? It's slicehost, not dreamhost, it'll survive the diggtastic masses.
- Narwaffle, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2dadly?
- KillTheRhythm, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2Hypocrite.
- crestfall, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2take it slow and easy, and read what you can. Ubuntu.com has TONS of resources and super-knowledgeable and friendly people.
- smoothmoniker, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2@ rieuwa
These are aimed at about the lowest geek level that should even think about building their own server. If these articles seem too geeky, you're better off hiring someone to manage your box, or using a shared hosting provider. - thekittenslayer, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Slicehost Rocks my world

- thekittenslayer, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Slicehost kicks ass!!!
- kingkilr, on 10/14/2007, -2/+2I wish there was one on how to set up Apache, PostgreSQL, Python, Django, and Lighttpd for static files.
- jaywee, on 10/14/2007, -1/+1Great stuff!! I am dadly in need of this!!
- domfosnz, on 04/04/2008, -0/+0I host with SliceHost. It is solid.
- tokyoice, on 04/04/2009, -0/+0Not many people know how to admin there servers so I think this is an awesome idea!
- kidd3ckz, on 10/15/2007, -1/+1Ur mom's a hippo

- kidd3ckz, on 10/15/2007, -3/+1I wish there was a tutorial for how to not sound like a ***** on the internet.
- Unr3a1, on 10/14/2007, -3/+1That's funny. I also school admins with my elite skills.
- Smokezz, on 10/14/2007, -3/+0Now thats funny... anyone can be a server admin. LOL.
- rocknroll4ever, on 10/14/2007, -3/+0 THANK YOU TO........Shootfast and to crestfall for their helpful response to my earlier inquiry !!
- asiegrist, on 06/20/2009, -5/+2Damn, with these *anyone* can be a server admin.... Looks like they're decent articles though.
- eviscero, on 10/14/2007, -5/+0mirror?
- solidsnake1298, on 10/14/2007, -9/+3Why would any smart server admin use Ubuntu as their server OS? There are far better distros for servers.
- ErBiC, on 10/14/2007, -17/+487 diggs, one comment, and yet it hits the front page.
Good stuff in there though.
