- tecmec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Um, or you could skip the long article and go to http://zoneedit.com/ ... its free and its friggen powerful. If you don't have a domain, use http://no-ip.com/ , also free.
There, I hope I saved you some time.
Edit: oh yeah, and both have linux clients. - cyclescott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3D'oh, should have put the link:
http://ops.ietf.org/dns/dynupd/secure-ddns-howto.html - squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://no-ip.org is what I use...it offers automatic port forwarding, so if you're running your server on port 8080 you don't have to type in www.yourwebaddresss.no-ip.org:8080 , but just www.youraddress.no-ip.org (www.dyndns.com does not offer automatic port forwarding) ...no-ip also offers other services such as web address forwarding... they also offer a client that''s put on the desktop to automatically sync your ip address to the no-ip server when it changes or is renewed.
- pdiddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2DynDNS.org is really handy, especially considering all the Linksys WRT54* models come with built in DNS updating. Very handy :)
- cyclescott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2slightly out of date, but a good ref on adding security to dyamic update for DNS:
Notes from the Dynamic Update workshop at RIPE
Depending on what service you use, these services might not be available, but maybe some other system. Otherwise one runs the risk of getting their domain name hijacked and redirected to another server. - InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use dyndns.org and "DynDNS Updater" software, been working great for 3 years. I run web/ftp/vibestreamer.
- artbarizo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dynamic DNS directions for Windows users can be found here:
http://www.hackernotcracker.com/2007-03/automatically-synchronize-volatile-ip-addresses-to-host-names-with-dynamic-dns.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dynamic IPs are really, really annoying. But for ISPs, it's the main thing stopping people from having a good web server. That's why ISPs these days charge outrageous fees for them
- nicholashill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It may be of interest to those that would like to understand DNS better there is a 2 part video podcast from ITidiots Episodes 6 & 7 which cover the subject in alot more detail as well as configuring your router to use the services provided in this article. Hope it is of some use to you http://feeds.feedburner.com/itidiots
- killerz298, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I suggested no-ip in this thread:
http://digg.com/software/Installing_your_own_webserver,_and_why_you_d_want_to
Works great for me! - squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1configuring your router does nothing more than enable you to not be forced to run an automatically updating client...the router does it for you...in many cases though in my experiences with multiple routers, the router will constantly ping the server, even if the IP address hasn't updated. This leads to a violation of the TOS, and eventually a termination in your account
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using ChangeIp.com for about 4 years now.
Its cheap, and I haven't had any problems. I don't know anything about their customer service though, I've never had to use it. - mmm_linux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does any one know if godaddy has a dns service built in? because i am thinking of switching form no-ip to godaddy for my domains.
- alphahelixx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ummm... and here I thought that it was about how to set up DNS + DHCP to interact to form a DDNS service for the internal network.. guess not.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6You gotta be in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately.
