The FSF never said that Apple violated the GPLv2. What they said was it was another example of Tivoization. Get your facts straight. - Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I care. I'm not being provoked into digging your article though.
We're techies anyway. Open source is about developing systems without worrying so much about legal issues or owners or rights...not many people are going to be excited about a license. It is just a licence. I'm sure it's not as rollercoaster read like Microsoft's EULA but it still matters. - cday, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm not even a software developer, but I care very much about the new GPLv3. I can see how important it is. The concept of the four freedoms and their value to all of us that choose to avail ourselves of them, is not that hard to grasp. As a mere end user I still appreciate the hard work that was put into the new GPL license. It was pretty amazing to watch. I'm glad it's here.
By the way, no diggs from me either...sorry. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Here we go again. I have been reading SJVN's articles for a long time, but recently, his apologism towards predatory Microsoft deals among other things (including this) just leave me utterly disappointed. I almost got the feeling that he accepts OOXML.

GPLv3 Emerges After Long Debate, Opposition Muted

As far as Apple and GPL software. I don't think anyone at the FSF is claiming that Apple is including code licensed under the GPL in OS X or Safari. They are both compiled using GCC and other GNU tools which is part of what the FSF was eluding to.
Buried because the author's clueless. - stonemirror, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure I agree with the disagreement here. Projects have had 18 months of discussion to come to grips with this new license, and making an announcement of intention to convert to v3 doesn't seem too difficult to do if one wanted to. I have yet to turn up a single instance of a project, no matter how small or self-contained, expressing an intention to go to GPL v3 other than the GNU projects and Samba.
If I were the FSF, I'd be pretty disappointed.
