- babbling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35They're both pretty good and it generally comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer their UI to offer more configuration options (KDE) and some people would rather have fewer options but more simple UIs (GNOME).
My personal preference is GNOME, but I can completely understand why some people would prefer KDE. It's good that we have a choice. - Gavagai80, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29Starting everything with a g (gedit, gftp, gnumeric, gphpedit, gaim, gimp, gaelon, gambas, gcompris, gconf, gfax, gfontview, gnash, gnotepad+, gnucash, gnuchess, gpaint, gpart, gqview, gstreamer...) is so much classier.

- LithiumGreen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Why do people insist upon making me read their blogs? I don't care about your blog, follow the Digg guidelines and point to the direct story. Buried as spam
- atdigg, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21I personally prefer KDE, but I like that GNOME makes nice progresses, the other day I configured GNOME in Kubuntu and I managed to make it work/look almost like KDE, I've had only few issues that would keep me from switching over (if I wanted): for some reason I can't set up a different type of connection in Pidgin, the SOCKS configuration disappears when in GNOME -- strange! I also couldn't figure out how to set up some keyboard settings that I prefer ( CTRL-ALT-ESC for xkill for example) that might be due to my lack of familiarity with GNOME but I still think that KDE is more configurable.
- orxor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Yeah I'm glad Gnome didn't go that route and name all the apps starting with G...
- Alex2, on 10/10/2007, -8/+20I liked Gnome since Redhat 5.2. I always considered the early KDE to be a cheap copy of CDE, and I hated how all the apps for KDE stated with K....
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Will it finally offer thumbnail view in file upload dialog box? I could not believe such a major usability feature was missing from Gnome.
- Sparkster185, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Amen to the "It's good that we have a choice."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18Actually KDE looks more like windows...
- KungFuJesus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9While the basic look is derived from windows, Windows has actually ripped features from KDE in the past. Such as grouping a bunch of windows from 1 app into 1 task bar entry which is expanded when you hover over it
- rjprux, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Happy Birthday
- Sairgem, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12OSX look..? KDE basically rips off Windows, it doesn't even come close to OSX. (Not bashing KDE, I'm posting from KDE right now.)
- muep, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Gnome 2.2 was released years ago. What they are working on now is Gnome 2.20.
- djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8"Dude, where's my terminal?" 0.o
- leszek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7another feature: the autorun of windows cd's:

This is the lamest complaint users can level against KDE. A rose is just as sweet by any other name, people. - Me1on, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Actually (correct me if I'm wrong), KDE is based off CDE, which was released before Windows had a GUI. So, in a way, you _could_ say that Windows rips off KDE.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Screen savers are so last millennium.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7When are they going to implement multiple wallpapers for the different workspaces.
- Xanium4332, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You're a flimsy ass cheap imitation!
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, 'cause some blog called "ubuntutista" on blogspot.com is the official Gnome blog... sounds very likely...............
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I agree, this is just blogspam. Here:
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.20/notes/en/ - ToadLeg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That means don't link to it in a permanent manner because new versions will come out. 2.20 is the current version and this is news, so the link is valid.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So all you need to do is talk to the GTK+ developers and say "We need a "GtkFileSelectorWithThumbnail" subclass", then somehow get every application developer out there who has an application that uploads something or needs to select a file with a thumbnail to switch to it.
Good luck, you're going to need it. GTK+'s core developers are some of the most stubborn people on the planet. - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have problems with Nautilus. There are about 200 bugs that have been left untouched since Eazel quit making it and forked the code over to the community to maintain, and some of them are just embarrassing.
Nautilus needs a real overhaul, but there are no developers out there willing to give it the kind of attention it needs; it's basically been on maintainence mode. Now that we're *finally* about to replace the VFS layer in all of GNOME, people are starting to get interested in Nautilus development again (thank goodness).
I'm still one for "Let's ditch Nautilus and make Gnome 2.22 use a GNOME-ified Thunar". - Klowner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah, and KDE isn't a CDE ripoff either. If you want something that's closer to CDE then take a look at XFCE ( xfce.org )
- colto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Classy.
- Alex2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Correction, CDE isn't Caldera's.. it was just on the Caldera distro.
Wikipedia lists it as proprietary and belonging to a set of companies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Desktop_Environment - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Yes, a lot of people including me have complained. Hardly anything gets done about it.
- cynicist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3To set global keybindings you would use gconf-editor, which can be started from the command line. In the left pane you go to apps > metacity > global_keybindings. In the right pane, choose a run_command_# in which you would put your key combination. Then in the left pane move to keybinding_commands and find the corresponding command_#, in which you would put your command.
- dacomputerfreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It IS good that we have a choice, these different projects have different goals in mind that fit different people. For example, my mother likes the fact that there's not too many options confronting her with Gnome. My father uses Mac and Windows (lately the Win32 box has been collecting some considerable dust though). I like the UI of Mac the most, but Gnome isn't too bad.
For those who love to jump to conclusions: (I'm married w/ 2 kids, and don't still live with parents). - kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If they did Google would have been screwed. No Gmail for 1
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"In GNOME 2.20, the keyring is unlocked automatically when you login and when you unlock your screen, avoiding the need for an extra password prompt."
Finally! No more libpam for me. - arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Applications » Accessories » Terminal? Or for the rest of us who find it so useful, keyboard shortcut!
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7I believe the question here is not so much "What features are they going to add?" but "What features are they planning on taking away this time?"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3compiz has problems with nautilus
Gnome shouldn't need another application. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4A screenshot run through of the new features would be more useful.
- Alex2, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7G-Unit would approve.
- Invid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Seriously. The ease of use that came to Ubuntu feisty with network manager was squandered by having to install and configure libpam to stop the constant keyring password prompt at login.
- gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The G in many of those is related to GNU rather thamn GNOME.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why can't you block users any more on Digg? Or rather - can you still do it?
- Nin10dude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2...A floppy?
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Compiz Fusion does that if you really need the feature.
- McTendo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Just block him, that's what everyone else does.
- soganess, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The Problem with Thunar is gnome. Its so hardwired to nautilus that integrating Thunar, no matter how successful it is at times is (a) still a hack, a dirty one most the time, and (b) bound to eventually break some kinda functionality. I really wish that was not the case as thunar really rocks, but such is life. I would say lets file a bug report with gnome, but i doubt that doing any good.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2i like the letter g better than k. k just seems so annoying
- Bobski, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5You are wrong. Nothing is "based off of" anything, though there are many things "based on" other things.
- Kugo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A more interesting list - if digg doesn't have enough lists already - would be what GNOME does not and will never have to offer. But OTOH we know that already. Anyway: Icaza is a Microsoft mole. That's been out in the open for years now.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It does how?
I can chance the top and bottom of the cube, but not each desktop -
