- pbeesley1989, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35I've always loved Gnome for its simplicity; keep up the good work guys!
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30Me too. KDE is way too cluttered and confusiong for my taste. Way to go GNOME!
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21If Gnome had a kioslaves-like implementation that was as smooth as KDE's, that would be awesome. I'm using Gnome now for better Beryl support, but most of my tools are KDE since I work on files using SSH a lot and the integration using kioslaves is so good.
IMO, KDE needs to work a lot on their K Menu and de-cluttering the default interface. That whole bottom panel needs a lot of work. The menu and the panel are the reason why many people think it's too Windows-like. KDE has better configuration tools and better dialog boxes than Gnome.
Gnome and KDE each have such great features that if one where to take the best features of KDE and the best features of Gnome and put them into a mashup program called Knome, Linux would have by far the best and most functional user interface of any OS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18It's nice to have both Gnome and KDE (and others). Each one compete with each other. In the end, the end-user is happy.
- simplisticton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19GNOME is, to me, more like OS X than Windows -- a lot fewer options with reasonable defaults, and a cleaner, less cluttered overall interface. But to each his own. It's all about choice!
- Konquest, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Incremental release...!
Bug Fixes!!
ZOMG!!11!!!1! - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I always felt that KDE treated people more like they are on Windows, but that's just my thought.
But I'm glad that you found something that you love! :) - mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Well, that's not exclusive to KDE. Think Gnometris.
- kwilliam, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"They need to work on their naming convention too. Its just plain silly that 80% of the apps start with a K."
So starting all your application names with 'K' is "plain silly" while starting them with 'i' is cool? Sheesh... - greghunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I just use gdm, that way I can choose which window manager to start when I boot up. Sometimes I feel like KDE, usually I use Gnome, if the other two are broken then I might use Xfce :)
- LCISTech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Now if we can get this marked as stables in Gentoo, I'll be a happy camper... Off to the Gentoo Forums I go!
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The good thing is that groups like these:
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/
http://www.freestandards.org/en/Main_Page
Are encouraging standards between KDE and Gnome. As in using similar taskbar applets, and such. So an applet will work in both. - Meep3D, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14They need to work on their naming convention too. Its just plain silly that 80% of the apps start with a K.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or with Java where everything starts with a J ... except, oddly enough, Netbeans.
Go figure. - jarturoar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love gnome and it's my default choice, but what I'm really missing is some real improvements, since the 2.x release i haven't seen anything really new, just "speed" and bug fixes :|
I don't now if there are any plans for something really big in the future - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love enlightenment, the only problem is more and more Linux desktop stuff is being directly incorporated into the big Desktop Environments, i.e. Gnome or KDE which is incredibly annoying, or at the very least requires quite a lot of setup to get working on a lite weight window manger such as enlightenment.
KDE looks more like windows to me as well, with Gnome being more like the Mac. - PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7That used to confuse the hell out of me!
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@steal_apps01
Your lesson for the day: It's spelled 'felatio' - the 'sh' sound comes via the same way we have the 'sh' sound in 'nation', 'munition' other words ending in '-tion'. - theboyqueen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3actually it's spelled "fellatio".
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just use garnome
- Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3To me Gnome seems more professional. KDE has great integration, with all the apps having the same menu bar layout, and the DCOP thing, but I'd rather show Gnome to a boss of a company than KDE...
Gnome apps just seem to be 'finished off' a bit better than KDE apps, and the whole thing is not as cluttered as KDE. - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish they removed all their interdependancies...
eg.
$ apt-cache depends gedit
gedit
Depends: gconf2
Depends: libgconf2-4
Depends: libgnome2-0
Depends: libgnomecanvas2-0
Depends: libgnomeprint2.2-0
Depends: libgnomeprintui2.2-0
Depends: libgnomeui-0
Depends: libgnomevfs2-0
Depends: gedit-common
Depends: python-gnome2-desktop
[non-gnome related entries removed]
Surely they could use other libraries that other applications also use. Those dependancies also depend on other things... to install Gedit I'd have to download 29.1MB worth of packages, which I'm not likely to do. Gedit, evince and EOG are programs that I would like to have installed, but they won't be due to the dependancies. - digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know when Debian packages will be available?
- t3st3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm actually preferring KDE but still have to admit: good work.Let's join our forces, not to fight each others. There is much more strong and dangerous enemies like M$ on the road...
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3What are you talking about?
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@theboyqueen:
I stand corrected. To be fair, my text widget spell-checker (OSX's) didn't catch my misspelling for some reason, which seems to be a common one according to Google. - MichelangeloPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tetris© is copyrighted. That's why the name can't be used. Although there's still gedit, gcalc, and the others.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5He's talking about stupid he is =/
- andyrobo60, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Says nothing about the only bug I have ever found in 2.16.1 (File Browser crashes when you refresh when in the "/" directory).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3I tried Gnome Xfce KDE
But i have fallen in love with E.
But would like to point out thinking that Gnome is lighter than KDE is big misconception.
Gnome treats ppl like they are using windows.
KDE is there to customise to ones liking.
E is with bling without bloat/.
XFCE well i dont like it at all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1wrong thread , sorry
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1he must give felashio to windows
