- nanostream, on 10/10/2007, -9/+97Here's an Idea, we should have the OPTION to use it in single window mode or not.
- SanjayM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+73If i could get GIMP in the GUI layout shown in the mockup or work in progress or whatever the image at the top is (Someone care to shed any light?) then i would be ecstatic, seriously, it looks great. Simple, one window, everything laid out nicely.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+61Floating windows suck *****. Why would we want to see all the other apps' windows or the crap on our desktop THROUGH the UI of the app we're trying to use? Stupid.
A proper setup should let you span monitors with a single window. - Drevor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30There should be a way to "unstick" those panels and turn them into child windows just like other apps do
- Noobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29I hope it doesn't look like a WordPress database error.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/10/2007, -7/+27Why are people digging schestowitz down? What's wrong with having choices?
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -8/+25I like the multiple window layouts. It allows for greater flexibility. Even when I used photoshop I did everything I could in multiple window layouts. With compiz/beryl grouping though, there's no need to have a single window... and you can hide the individual windows from the window task panel without any problems.
- luciferin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18He's being dugg down because he obviously didn't read the article. It states that the one window UI is planned to be an option.
- Drevor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Unfortunately this article only concentrates on the multi/single document interface but there are way more pressing issues with GIMP. Just take the open/save dialogs. They are neither what a user expects nor do they retain the functionality of most native open/save dialogs.
http://gui.gimp.org/index.php/Expert_Evaluation_Notes is a good read on the topic - carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16it's been a long time coming, I think they should allow for the multi-window layout option, but use a single window layout by default since it's much less confusing and more likely to be used if it's not confusing the heck out of first timeers.
- luciferin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15The save dialog has never been that much of a problem for me.. The window I spend more than 90% of my time in GIMP using would take precedence here.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18"But the team notes many new design applications, like Apple Aperture and Adobe Lightroom use a single window interface. After the changes above are complete, they intend on discussing an option to enable single window interface"
I like how, for Apple-oriented people, this idea is NEW. It isn't; the mess-of-floating-windows fad was a digression and a step backward, which applications with a strong Mac heritage never got over. And that means Adobe and Macromedia. - Shootfast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The most annoying thing about GIMP as a new user, is accidentally closing one of the floating toolbars instead of the entire program. Then, they remain closed next time you start up until you root around the preferences to get them back.
- luciferin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Kind of like the option you had to READ THE ARTICLE you're talking about?
"The plan is for a single menu item to enable the interface in the mockup above." - archiesteel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Aren't the open/save dialogue basically the ones from the GTK toolkit?
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10You might not know this, but there are a lot of people on this planet, I personally hate the floating winows (EXCEPT if clicking one would bring ALL of the winows into focus, then I think i'd like it) However, I can think of 5 or 6 people i've met off the top of my head, who all PREFERRED the floating window design to a single window one.
- ClayDragon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Right-click window title bar, select "Always on Top". Done. Where's the problem?
BTW, I like the multiple window layout much better. I always thought for a graphics application like The GIMP it's much better than the ancient and clumsy multi-document and "shove-it-all-in-one-window" interface. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -35/+45No SINGLE window. What about those of use who work with multiple displays and virtual desktops? This takes away a lot of power and versatility, unless they make it an /option/ without leading to confusion.
- TheFBI, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I hate the multi windows, primarily because the "tool" windows (everything except the image window) aren't "always on top", they just act like regular windows. That's annoying. I wish there would be an option to pin the windows to "always on top" or pin them off again.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Damn that looks NICE, would make it a much better program.
- revisrev, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It's not poor if you're used to it. If that's what you like then it should be an option. On the other hand, I'm used to multi-window and I still don't like it. Give me a single window, default or not, just give it to me.
- lqqkout4elfy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What's useful here is that they're actually address UI improvements. If the study of the UI returns that the MAJORITY of graphics users tend to work according to a work flow & UI similar to Photoshop, then it should be a priority for the GIMP project to make it like Photoshop.
- skimmas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7One window is good. They should be detachable windows so users can work as they please. I also think it's about time for new icons, and an overall interface design. I think Gimp could be an high quality software almost like photoshop, but there must be a mix between good features and good interface design.
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Very good idea, Nano. I really like the single window, it's like my first reaction to using Firefox's tabs vs. Internet Explorer's windows.
- nailer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I've used Gimp for 10 years. I love it. But I don't love it because of its interface. As gimp.org and the article mention, the toolbox isn't even a real floating toolbox, it's a whole window with a taskbar entry. As it also mentions, it's not necessary to have the menus split between the toolbox and image window.
- manbearpigm16, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7So they change the ui based on complaints and recommendations and yet people still complain? Quit crying.
- stormgren, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Buried you for being anal about using an apostrophe.
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yes it is, with a little extra crap at the bottom in a GtkExpander (and an image preview area that is found in a few other Gtk applications). Frankly I love gtk, an i don't see anything wrong with the load or save dialogs...
- BlackOp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5From Firefox?
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If you learn to use GIMP, it's not hard to use, which is just the same as photoshop or any other image editor.
A lot of feedback static is being generated by people who took 3 hours to fiddle with photoshop when they first got it, but not GIMP - people with two main problems:
"it's not exactly the same as photoshop"
"I didn't bother to learn how to use it or explore the interface"
Neither of these is a problem for the developers to fix, imo. There are bigger, more useful, functionality-related things that need doing. - Eddible, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'm still waiting for Adobe to get tabs in Photoshop, it'd make life so much easier.
- jrsims, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Looking great! And it's about god-damned time. Now all we need to do is change the name to something that doesn't freak out my bosses so I can use it at work.
What a terrible TERRIBLE name. Yuck.
This project is worth forking if only for a name change. - mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5From the article: After the changes above are complete, they intend on discussing an option to enable single window interface:
‘From our point of view there are no negative sides to providing also a single window interface, except for doubling complication and effort in documentation and support.’
i.e. AN OPTION - Noobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I personally prefer the separate windows, having two desktops to switch between makes it easy, I can resize everything the way I want and the "single window" becomes your desktop. The only problem I have is the slightly funky way the actual content and options work within those windows. They should work on that too. ;)
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7.. because he failed to RTFA and his opening line was "No SINGLE window." and if I read that correctly he's saying no to a single window GUI therefore limiting choices and would rather a GUI choice which would suit an incredibly low amount of people.
And he's annoying. - Eoxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Link to FAQ for new stuff in 2.4 (in French)

etc ... - cdmarcus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They're not what the user expects? Hmm, let's see, that's the same dialog I see when saving any OTHER file on my system... what OS are you running? All OS jokes aside, it's a GTK app, so it's going to use GTK dialogs... having them to rewrite the whole thing in a different UI toolkit is far too much to ask. However, I won't complain if they introduce versions written in the native Windows or Mac GUI toolkits, although I'll probably never use them.
- tavisjohn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I prefer the "multiple window" format. It is more compatable with Multy Monitor setups. I can have all the tools on one screen, and the other screen can be just for what I am working on.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5> It's not poor if you're used to it.
Just because you're used to it doesn't magically make it NOT a poor design choice. Look at the QWERTY keyboard, it's inefficient as hell and out-dated and we're all used to it but that doesn't mean it isn't [now] a poor choice. - dragon76, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5The problem is the obscurity of basic functions.
- nailer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The site's up. It's on a Terabyte hosting plan and has hit the front page of digg quite a few times in the past.
That plan is paid for, barely, by a small amount of adwords.
Please don't link to mirrors unnecessarily. - dpjames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3the secret to GIMP is memorizing the shortcut keys, once you've done that you don't even need the visual "buttons" -- the same goes for Photoshop -- print them out and get to work
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Paint.NET sort of has thumbnails, check that out.
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They haven't changed anything yet...
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3UI looks fantastic. The only thing left for me is to make it easier to modify brushes, it's a pain in the ass the way it is now.
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4That doesn't stop that from being a poor analogy. Layouts and GUIs are visual arts and are simply a matter of preference, period.
- mccord, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4your windowmanager should be able to handle this ;)
afair i had to use a 3rd party program to get the 'always on top' functionality under windows
i don't remember the name though :/ - rexprime, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4hell, i would just like it if they would combine the skew/scale/distort tools into one "free transform" tool.
- TehRoxor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have never heard of a black person taking the arbitrary usage of the word "chimp" offensively.
- Luigi239, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2A single window UI can be nice, but I prefer multi-window myself. With multiple windows, it means I'm not using more screen space then I need. Also, I can be looking at something else, like say a tutorial. I can read the tutorial while working in the multi window environment, as opposed to having to switch windows constantly in a single window UI. That being said, a single window UI can keep you more focused.
Heres to having a choice between single and multi window UI's. -
