- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8There's a nice script-fu that achieves this... even does more. I understand, however, that this item is educational.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Script-foo has to be my favorite feature of the Gimp.
- noseeme, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Wow, that's hella-tacky.
- michuk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7benitojuarez: not bad, but irrelevant. GIMP can do this is 2 seconds as well. But it's not the purpose of this article to show the fastest way, but to actually learn something.
- michuk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7The set of tutorial that we are going to publish are more to show the GIMP amateurs how to operate on layers and use basic effects. It's like calculating a formula -- you can use Texas Instruments mini-computer to do this or evaluate the function on paper. You learn only doing the latter.
- precurser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6You too can achieve text effects just like it were 1998 again!
- MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Tutorials like these are what Gimp needs to get out of the "it's too hard to use" stigma. The Photoshop to Gimp tutorial ratio is staggering.
- BlackOp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Heres another tip: if youre using gimp 2.2, try the 2.3 dev release, it's much slicker.
- TheG2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Because Photoshop is the industry standard and actually has a decent interface and all the features real designers need? Oh...wait..
- 0x0000ff, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4wrong article?
- shah82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0gratulujÄ™ noss :)
Pozdro z www.gimpuj.info ;) - CheapDigWannbe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Outer glow
- Kazrog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1And this cheesy effect would only take one step in Photoshop, without any scripts or stored actions! We're gonna party like it's 1999 with that neon (aka Outer Glow.)
Don't get me wrong, I like certain aspects of GIMP a lot, but it's got a long way to go for me to consider using it professionally. - CircleFusion, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I think you mean layer effects or styles, not layer filters.
As said above, this tutorial is to teach a fundamental skill to apply techniques that are common in a lot of programs. Multiple layers, blending modes (dodge) and gaussian blur are pretty common in lots of graphic software. Also, when you know how to create "outer glows" in this way, then you have more fine control over the technique than using Photoshop's layer effects.
I had a graphic design instructor that once showed us how to implement some common photoshop filters and layer effects manually by using masks, blending modes, selections, and simple filters like blur. This, he said, opens up a lot of doors in understanding what is really possible with Photoshop. It can also be applied to various graphics software out there. - kevinlyfellow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Greg: I drive to work everyday in my Geo Metro.
Dan: Oh yeah, I can drive to work faster in my V-8 Mustang. You're a looser Greg, your should either buy a Mustang or steal one.
Some people use the Gimp, other use Photoshop. Let the Gimp users use the Gimp and not try to convince them to buy a 600 dollar piece of software. - admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -8/+7Hrm. I wasnt aware that digg was for posting tutorials on how to achieve effects popular in the last decade with software that can do it automatically.
Seems I've been corrected. - drilldown, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Steam is drifting off at last. Just booted the XP HDD which should have done just fine recording the Pinnacle 10.8 patched recorded file of some GA rain. FAILED.
Raining in GA BTW. I've got it on MPEG2. Can't share the experience with you though. I Know, I'll post on you tube tonight. Most boring thing ya ever heard. Nice GA thunderstorm. Neither software provider is adequately supported. - benitojuarez, on 10/11/2007, -6/+5oh *****, you said something bad about foss on digg. my condolences to your survivors.
- CircleFusion, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You would need to use outer glow and a modified "drop shadow" to do the same thing. He's using two different colors for a layered effect on the outer glow.
- Meep3D, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1It doesn't have that stigma for no reason. It's slow, the GUI is thoughtlessly designed, it is overly complex and lacks that majority of features that make Photoshop as useful as it is.
In short nobody uses it (and thusly don't write tutorials) because it's crap, not because it's got a 'stigma'. But I forgot, it's FOSS so is automatically better than the competition due to the 'superior development method'. - drilldown, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2http://youtube.com/watch?v=3i4VvxTa1z8
OH wait. Found a way to share. Minimize the screen, maximize the sound, and turn off the copyright.
THIS. Is my rain on a hot tin roof. I promised, eh? - MrSpontaneous, on 10/11/2007, -12/+6Photoshop can do this in two seconds. Thank god for layer filters.
- drilldown, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3So I installed pinnacle 10.8 beta on Vista and can't burn the thunderstorm I recorded on my DV recorder to disk.
Such a ***** waste of money. A shame really. Tracked it down to the video copyright integration on pinnacle/vista/patched from 10.5. ***** the both of them!
