"Although I don’t mind compiling and installing apps"
His first paragraph has about a dozen examples showing he's used Linux allot before. So its more like some guy who uses allot of OS' switches them around.
And the kicker?
"Finally, I like Gnome. Say what you want about KDE, Gnome, etc but Gnome for me has always been stable in all the distrobutions I’ve worked with."
For anyone to say all the distros they have used, he has obviously used a few.
Maybe it was allot easier because YOU HAD DONE IT BEFORE.
Next up: anyone over 5 says tieing shoelaces is easy. Driving is easier when you have driven before, and opening chip packets without them exploding everywhere comes from practice. - FLarsen, on 02/20/2009, -0/+67I downloaded linuxsetup.exe off limewire to try it out. I don't get what all the fuss is about, it didn't do much. It gave me a nice toolbar in IE though, with lots of functionality likkkkkkkkkkkke a search box.
- Gndoab, on 02/20/2009, -5/+70"I was tired of the 7 and a 1/2 minute boot-up"
7 1/2 minutes? if you install tons of things and let them run at startup, thats your own fault, and it has nothing to do with what OS is being used.
"I was tired of the random waiting after clicking on anything in nearly any program. "
Again, it sounds like there are too many programs running in the background. That will slow down any OS, and again, that is a problem that can only be created by the user.
"Although I don’t mind compiling and installing apps"
*average computer user*: You don't mind doing what? com-pil-ing? whats that?
"Second, although I don’t often pay for commercial support I am a big believer in that a strong base of free support such as forums, blogs, etc is a necessity. In this area Ubuntu really seems to outshine the competition."
Don't get me started on the Ubuntu forums. They are fantastic for every day problems for *experienced* users, but what happens when you have a niche piece of hardware that doesn't work, or are a *complete* newbie at the OS? The forums are hardly the place to learn what it means to "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras". I can see it now, a new user not having a clue what a sudo password is, then nobody answering his question because he's a *noob* (happened to me)
"For this I’ve gone with Virtualbox and loaded a copy of Windows XP in a virtual machine."
*new user* you used a virtual what with who? huh?
I do like ubuntu, and linux in general, but come on. It's misleading to say that It's easier than you thought, but at the same time having to do technical work arounds in order to get functionality up to the level one desires.
Plus, if a person messes up their windows installation by installing every last program on the internet, that isn't the fault of microsoft. - FLarsen, on 02/20/2009, -1/+59Sorry for the extra k's there, my computer has been freezing a lot lately. I don't get why it does that.
- PantherX, on 02/20/2009, -6/+63I'm tired of these articles. Nobody is going to install Linux because of this article. There are too many just like it.
Most people do not know what Linux is. Even if they've heard of it, they think it's something that runs in Windows. - DrunkenPirate34, on 02/20/2009, -1/+35Seriously, the guys *just* switched to Firefox? Are you kidding me?
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -2/+307 and a half minute Windows boot? What a ***** idiot.
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -9/+34I'm a fan of ubuntu but - until linux makes some major progress I'm going to be having to keep running the multi boot set up I've got going on. /games
- yessuz, on 02/20/2009, -0/+22Dugg for chip packets
- smacksaw, on 02/20/2009, -0/+22How can this guy be knowledgeable like he is in Linux, yet incapable of managing his Windows bootup times and make Windows run better? I think it's safe to say if you can use Linux, you most certainly would find Windows easy. Just as if you use Windows, you will find using a Mac easy. That's the one way street though, because people who are only familiar with Mac get progressively more frustrated with Windows and then Linux. And if you're like me and you become really proficient at Windows, moving to Linux is no big deal. But if you're a regular Windows user it's not going to be easy since the approach to doing things is foreign.
I wonder where this guy is coming from. I just think if he is that good with Linux and his many applications, he surely could wrangle Windows. - pukiman, on 02/20/2009, -2/+21Stopped reading after getting to this part: "I was tired of the 7 and a 1/2 minute boot-up. I was...".
It he somehow managed to get ANY operating system to boot in more than 7 minutes, then only god can help him. No switching OS going to help a guy that lacks any basic knowledge in computers.
Wish him luck with his Linux experience. - jessenoob, on 02/20/2009, -1/+19Woooooosh
- fandyllic, on 02/19/2009, -17/+32Buried for being captain obvious. Also for saying his linux install was faster and more stable which is also a "duh". You'll notice he's still using his Mac.
- tekkitan, on 02/20/2009, -2/+15or have a spam filter like you should have, IDIOT
- DarkShroud, on 02/20/2009, -4/+16Either you're full of crap or had no real idea what you were doing. Vista has a faster startup than XP, especially if you have 2gig of ram.
- tekkitan, on 02/20/2009, -0/+10and just to rub it in more...
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/247 ... - FLarsen, on 02/20/2009, -0/+10He stated his personal opinion, something that's supposed to be selfish.
Let's take a look at his statements:
"I'm tired of these articles."
- His personal opinion of this type of article.
"Nobody is going to install Linux because of this article."
- That seems probable.
"There are too many just like it."
- Yes, that's true.
"Most people do not know what Linux is."
- That appears to be true also.
"Even if they've heard of it, they think it's something that runs in Windows."
- I'd say that's pretty accurate.
Based on that, I find nothing wrong with his comment. - TotalHalibut, on 02/20/2009, -5/+14Getting rid of Windows is easier than I thought!
Unless I like games.... or decent video-editing suites, or good sequencers, or audio-editing packages... - mabsark, on 02/20/2009, -0/+9lol, hotmail.
- tekkitan, on 02/20/2009, -1/+10no one needs to use outlook. they just dont know how to use anything else because it's "too hard".
- anonymousmedic, on 02/20/2009, -7/+16yeah, getting rid of Windows is easier than I thought.
Then I lost the ability to play EVE with any performance, lost FEAR/2, lost MechWarrior, lost Outlook and the ability to sync my blackberry, lost Flight Simulator, lost my bluetooth, and lost the ability to access my corporate extranet. Oh, but it's my fault because I'm a newbie, and I haven't lrn'd2wine. I mean, Jesus Christ, up till two years ago, it was an act of God to even get a USB joystick to work with it, don't even try to get most laptop wireless cards to. Even with NDISWrapper, the support sucks.
But don't tell the linux fanboys that. To them, Linux is the God everyone should be forced to worship because it's free and you can't spell it with a $ lolololol.. Just because it's free does not mean it's better for everyone, and not everyone wants to spend hours configuring a single program and it's dependancies to get it to run to their satisfaction. Until linux has the same support for installing and going, without compiling or without having to manually configure things, then it will never be a viable end-user OS for the average home needs. - tama00, on 02/20/2009, -1/+10OMG you are the first person to ever document your move from Windows to Linux!
- mrnathan, on 02/20/2009, -1/+9i thought that was hilarious also.
"For web browsers I’ve finally given up my IE and Safari and migrated to Firefox. This was another app which in the past hadn’t quite evolved to where I needed it."
Everyone knows how feature rich and stable ie6 was compared to Firefox 2! Thanks god they've finally got it up to standard!
Firefox, and previously Mozilla (or opera for that matter) have always been better than IE in my oppinion, ie is just not good.
Safari is a good piece of software, but i've noticed recently when comparing it with firefox that it uses a lot more RAM. Aside from the add-ons (which i regularly use a few of in firefox, enough to put me off using any other browser) i do prefer safari; it's just the RAM hogging im not a fan of. - ColinZeal, on 02/20/2009, -3/+10I can not go to Open Office from MS Word 2007.. needless to see full pages when you write.. Word adapts the size of the page after the text. And there are no dead space between the pages.
Open Office Writer = Microsoft Word ~97
Oh, and AppStore (iTunes) and Ipod Touch don´t work on any linuxbased platform.. That´s a no deal for me I tell you.
And it isn´t really that hard to make the jump if you´ve used Linux before. Bad article. - tekkitan, on 02/20/2009, -1/+8I have a job thank you very much. With an IT company that runs Linux/UNIX/Mac exclusively. I would say that 80% of our communication is e-mail and we heavily use contact lists and calendars. We are doing just fine without ***** Outlook and ***** Microsoft.
- rolf, on 02/20/2009, -0/+7The same people who think Linux runs in Windows probably don't even know what windows is beyond it being "the computer".
- Gndoab, on 02/20/2009, -1/+8yeah. Because if you have 256 MB of ram, having 15 firefox tabs open while editing a 2 gig file in GIMP won't slow down your ability to watch HD video while using ubuntu. at all. because it's linux.
Nowhere did I say windows was perfect. I said if you have too many processes going on in the background, things will be slow, *REGARDLESS* of OS. Just like if you have 30 things on autostart, regardless, it will take a long time to boot. The OS has no bearing on that. - anonymousmedic, on 02/20/2009, -1/+7You're advocating the exact thing that the GNU is against, piracy.
You're violating the entire spirit of open source, to show people they don't have to pirate what they need, but they can get it for free. Shame on you. - damentz, on 02/20/2009, -1/+7Until halfway through the article, I thought this was a gentoo ricer acting like he was switching over to get on Digg's frontpage.
- Lorddias, on 02/20/2009, -5/+11Yawn.. Linux is becoming more and more of a bandwagon.
- Cryoniq, on 02/20/2009, -3/+9yeah, and u soo need that.. no u dont because there are way better things than outlook! Start open your eyes and have a look around sometime.
- theaceoffire, on 02/20/2009, -0/+6@Tekkitan
I had a customer try to get me to write a 3rd party front end for a label making program because he couldn't figure out how to change the font size.
Once I clicked "12" to "10" he was happy.
Sometimes this world bothers me. - StanleyKoolPrik, on 02/20/2009, -5/+11Fact: Until Adobe ports its Creative Suite, Linux lives in the OS ghetto.
- mrnathan, on 02/20/2009, -0/+6@FLarsenFLarsen
I appreciated that shtick :p - rolf, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5Since he does web development, I assumed he had to use IE to check his work for compatibility with the leading browser.
- Elranzer, on 02/20/2009, -1/+6At least he said "Linux" and not "Ubuntu" (Digg's blanket term for Linux).
- tekkitan, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5hell ***** no. why would i use something so inferior?
- psion01, on 02/20/2009, -1/+6Okay, I'll assume you're trying to say that there are features of Outlook that are irrelevant or unnecessary and that there are other "groupware" packages that offer a more robust set of tools. Please provide links, because I've never heard of any and I've been a Linux user since 1999.
Hiding behind scorn and insults does nothing to support open source in general or Linux in particular. The OS has its shortcomings and shouting down anyone who acknowledges those problems is far less productive than contributing to a development team that's actually doing something about it.
In other words, Put up or shut up. - mizatt, on 02/20/2009, -1/+6FF3 is pretty much the best browser ever made
- mabsark, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5Some people probably don't even know that much.
"How do I get this internet thing to work?"
"Have you got Windows?"
"Of course I have. I'm not a caveman you know, I do live in a house." - ColinZeal, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5Cryoniq (Linux apologist?):
1) I actually used Writer just a week ago. Saved in .doc and when I loaded the same file into Word´07, the pics were thumbnails.
WTF?
It wasn´t a big problem to fix but still, it´s a problem and when it can´t save the files correctly, then it´s a no-go.
2) I´m not saying it´s GNU/Linux fault that AppStore doesn´t work. I´m saying that the "jump" isn´t as easy as the somewhat biased linux-dude wants give impression of.
PirateBay doesn´t give me apps, podcasts and the ability to buy for the stuff that deserves it in one package.
(I have no problem buying and pirating) - mrnathan, on 02/20/2009, -1/+6If you associate windows with PC then yes, you have been brainwashed by marketing.
- Cryoniq, on 02/20/2009, -3/+7Try 8.10. There been a lot of improvements since 7.1. Unlike Windows and MacOS, GNU/Linux practically get a major overhaul each month of you smack every distro together and apply changes in average. Now Windows and MacOS have those each 5 years and not even near the exploison of features, benefits, new drivers, bux fixes etc.
I am more of a Arch Linux and PCLOS guy, but I have to say that Ubuntu improved a lot and in a much better direction. So for those "less" experience with GNU/Linux than me I would recomend PCLOS, then Ubuntu actually as of today. Nearly the other way around since PCLOS is behind as of the moment in release, and Tex developer seem taken a break or .. hmm so.. - DarkShroud, on 02/20/2009, -0/+4He's supposed to be a web developer that's why. They do tend to spend a lot of time in IE. Also, IE8 RC-1 is actually pretty decent.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5But dammit will that OS be FAST and COOL!!!
Quick, let's get WINE up and running to try and emulate all the programs we could have run if we just used Windows in the first place! - FLarsen, on 02/20/2009, -0/+4@mrnathan: Thank you.
- feignNU, on 02/20/2009, -0/+4@anonymousmedic
I'm not calling you stupid. However I want to know why you feel justified in claiming that linux has "major flaws" when you simultaneously claim to not know much about it. Maybe you could explain what those major flaws are, I'm curious to hear.
There's no self-righteousness in telling you that you should try to learn how it works before you go screaming that it's "majorly flawed" and too hard. How many times have you seen someone claim that they "shouldn't have to" read documentation? What a ludicrous idea. You should just be able to figure it out by magic? It's a powerful, multi-faceted tool. I can't figure out why it comes as a shock to people that it requires some learning. - RedRummy, on 02/20/2009, -0/+4technically, thats the XBox's fault :)
- Malarie, on 02/20/2009, -0/+4I use a PS3 for gaming. For anything else, there is Ubuntu.
- jackdaniels06, on 02/20/2009, -3/+7Go Linux! FREEEEDOMMMMM!!!
