- reha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15nice copy from this link http://www.ubuntugeek.com/free-ubuntu-linux-e-books.html
- wordsnyc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Pirated e-books hosted in China. Not "free."
- underdog5004, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Ubuntu Hack (n) - person who tried ubuntu but failed miserably.
- chrisbarr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I was hoping for a PDF download or something.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Well not 'free' as in beer, or 'free' as in speech. But they are 'free' as in stolen.
- alphaone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Whaaaaa? Encouraging the legal route to support something you like? Brilliant!
Piracy for the sake of piracy is stupid. Get a job and support what you enjoy before it disappears. - kahrn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Pirating the official ubuntu book is kinda lame if you are an ubuntu supporter. Go out and buy the book and support cannonical to keep ubuntu going.
I prefer having a physical copy of the book anyway, so i might go and buy the official book and the ubuntu unleashed book sometime. - parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Ubuntu Hacks": Inluding how to change the desktop wallpaper and more...

Funny thing is you're right - popey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@st0nes Licence != copyright
Just because it is creative commons licenced doesn't mean it is free of copyright. The people who wrote it still retain copright on their work, they just released it under a permissive licence. - julieBi, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1A good source of Ubuntu guides

They also have a good forum about Ubuntu sound problem. - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1All of these are about a year old..... and at least from what I've seen, Ubuntu has made a lot of changes since then.. so I'm not too sure how relevant some of the things mentioned in there will be if you've moved onto Feisty , but I'm sure it still will help people get a better understanding of what is generally going on and how the system operates.
For the most part you can find all this information online right now, just updated information which would probably be much more helpful if your going to look into the tweaking end.
Trying some of the tweaks from last June may work.. but some also may not and could mess things up a bit more if your using a different version of Ubuntu then they are (which I would assume in most cases you would be)... so.. be careful. =) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Anything free is gud. Keep 'em coming.
- jasutton, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yes, and it's poetic justice to see them now suffering from the Digg Effect :)

"licence infringement" is not "theft"
it doesn't make it any better, but please, stop spreading the RIAA/MPAA propoganda - st0nes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The Official Ubuntu Book is creative commons licence and is not copyright -- I have a pdf version although I can't remember where from (maybe ubuntu.org). I don't know about the rest.
- cryptoki, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Ive been using vtc.com and have unlimited access to their entire library of computer video training courses including Ubuntu (about 5.5 hours worth of training for ubuntu) Full access is 30 bucks a month. Beats reading a manual. You can even try the first 13 videos for free to see if you like it or not
- gahal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As was I.
Guess wget can climb through the pages, however searching for specific things would be hella easier with a continuous document like a pdf. - xShad0w, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nice link, and woot update is gone
- iceschade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just a clarification: The Official Ubuntu Book is licensed under a Creative Commons license, which makes copying it perfectly legal so long as attribution is made to the original authors. Therefore, their hosting of The Official Ubuntu Book is 100% legal, even in the United States of America (where we'd sue you as quick as look at you).
As for the other books, I do see that they're copyrighted in full, and I haven't seen any mention made of an open-source license other than to give an example of the GPL. For this reason, I can say with near-certainty that (if this were hosted in the US) this would be an illegal breach of copyright laws.
However, none of this is hosted in the US, it's all in China, so I'm not sure WHAT could be done about it.
What I can say is this: When you "pirate" music online, after hearing the songs and deciding whether you like it or not, you may choose to go purchase the book. Like an unintentional free demo of sorts. It's good for business.
Viewing these books online is much the same thing. You go, you read, and if you like, you buy. All of these books are available at your local Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Reading them online (on a slow pipe to China) is tedious and counterproductive. It's great to get a good idea of what information is covered, but there's no guarantees that these books will be online a year from now.
So if you take some time to read the book, and you like what you see, go buy it! Support Canonical, and support the authors who have put so much time into bringing you a book that will help you along in your quest for Ubuntu knowledge.
Side note: If you go straight to http://book.opensourceproject.org.cn, you'll find that there are plenty of other books available, including various other distros (like SuSE, Fedora, and Debian to name a few). If you're going to post a "free Linux books" thread on Digg, don't just say "Free Ubuntu Books," because people using other distros (or looking for a book on the Battle of Wesnoth) are going to miss out. - zazzybob, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Pirated ebooks - how original - never knew you could get those on the internet.

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1there is no such thing as a free puppy
in case you don't get what I was saying: Ubuntu being bad ass, although it still can be a chore for the noob. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Ubuntu asshat - being a "I'm superior to you because I posted/dugg a bunch of articles about why you should switch to Ubuntu and when you do and ask for advice I will tell you digg is not the place for linux help even though there have been numerous Ubuntu 'how to' articles on digg"
/yea that was a long run on but who cares really? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1oops bury plz
- mojaam, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Did the word 'Free' really needs to be said. I though ubuntu and free are synanomous.
