- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+102Yay! Linux!!
- finite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48Seriously! This is a major breakthrough for Linux on the desktop. Being unable to view flash 9 content is many users' main complaint after switching away from proprietary operating systems.
Unfortunately, just like the previous flash for Linux releases, there is no acknowledgment whatsoever that Linux is used on platforms besides x86. So PowerPC users are still out in the cold.
This is a prime example of why people dislike proprietary software, especially on Linux: If Adobe could just get over themselves and open the source, volunteers would have builds for other architectures in no time, and I'd be able to watch youtube in Linux on my Mac. Why not, Adobe?
People have been saying PPC Linux is dead for years, but with YDL's recent PS3 announcement hopefully it is clear that it won't be going away anytime soon. - pwill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50Hey! Audio/Video are syncing now! That must be a new feature in Flash...
- jessejoedotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30@ iamcitizen
Yes, the new Flashplayer uses ALSA now, so not only will A/V sync, but Flash sound will play even if you're already listening to something! - ShadowUnseen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18This isn't Flash 9, it's Flash Player 9......dam you got me so excited...
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13In addition to synchronized audio, Flash player 9 also appears to be using less CPU time when playing back videos and games. WOOHOO!
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"not only will A/V sync, but Flash sound will play even if you're already listening to something!"
WOOOOOOOOOOOT!
Sorry, I don't know what came over me. - nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Adobe asks that we all make a request here:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
If there are enough requests asking for Flash 9 for PPC Linux they will consider making it. I agree that with Yellow Dog Linux coming out for the Sony PS3 that this market will absolutely want this so they can view YouTube videos! - tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Do we have Flash 8 Player too? Or did we just skip that? I don't remember seeing Flash Player 8 for Linux.
- finite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48Seriously! This is a major breakthrough for Linux on the desktop. Being unable to view flash 9 content is many users' main complaint after switching away from proprietary operating systems.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+112flash player on linux? you know what this means....
it's PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!!- Asshate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29My head asplode!
- dougmc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8If I remember correctly, the Peanut Butter Jelly Time flash file worked OK on the Flash 7 that's available for Linux. But that doesn't mean we can't see it again ... for the first time!
- briguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Works fantastic!
- jorisb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11this is great, let's hope we're never left behind like this again
- spacecowboy420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Unless you are running a 64bit machine....Linux OR Windows. My spanking new laptop running ubuntu does everything flawlessly, even my wireless works better than on XP. But alas, I am forced to look at "Install missing plugin" images on almost every site. Anyone ever figure out a work around other than running in 32bit mode?
- H3g3m0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4nspluginwrapper allows you to use 32bit plugins in a 64bit browser, i think you need a 32bit browser to be installed also.
Was working quite well for me, I was able to play just about all streaming media using that and plugins for vlc and mplayer etc... - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you can run firefox in a 32-bit chroot, or horror of horrors use the windows version in wine. if you're on a 64-bit box and want flash that's all I know of that you can do.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sorry for the double post, but check out the nsplugin thing here -> http://www.kaourantin.net/2006/07/random-bits-on-current-status.html
- phatscum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34Hail Mary!
This has made me a very happy penguin. - redhatcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15This works great. The standalone even works well on x86_64.
Now if there were only betas for the plugin compiled for x86_64 and PPC. I can dream, can't I?- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13there's no reason to think that wont happen... PPC and x86_64 should only be a compile away.
- jackcall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Maybe it's just a compile away, but according to adobe http://www.kaourantin.net/2006/07/random-bits-on-current-status.html there won't be a one, at least not in beta.
- pwill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@shrewduser:
Can't compile without the source, buddy. - nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Adobe asks that we all make a request here for PPC Linux FLash Players:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
If there are enough requests asking for Flash 9 for PPC Linux they will consider making it. Spread the word please! - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4PPC Linux uses all the same libraries, etc as x86. So yes if we had the source we could just compile it and run on PPC, or x86_64.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13there's no reason to think that wont happen... PPC and x86_64 should only be a compile away.
- hijinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21works great on the few sites I tested.. and the best part is I don't see the noticable sound lag as with the old macromedia version.. Go Adobe!
- Brightside, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I can finally enjoy YouTube!!
Good test video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=KfyISaW9hV8- alexmipego, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Maybe its too late :P
(Now that it is GooTube) - Seften, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Yes, finally A/V syncs correctly. Now to test some of those flash games!
- cwahlers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You can also finally enjoy FC64, the C64 emulator for Flash Player 9
http://codeazur.com.br/stuff/fc64_final/ - puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18and PornoTube.com!
- dougmc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Your test video plays fine on the Flash 7 player I've had installed on Linux for a while now ...
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been using a combination of youtube-dl and totem's xine backend to play those yootoob files.
Maybe now Google's taken over they could just put a stupid download button on their site directly. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That youtube link worked very well with Flash Player 9. Finally Adobe brought it out.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YouTube has been working fine in flash 7 in firefox for ages, by the way.
Still, this is a real bonus, opens up the web a lot - and now we have to hunt the bugs down, report them, and see them get fixed, which is rewarding in itself. Found two, a fair few to go, I'm sure. :-) - subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@puffarthur:"and PornoTube.com!"
Site works fine with Flash 7 on Mozilla. (checked for research purposes only)
Yeah right......
- alexmipego, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Maybe its too late :P
- rayishu, on 10/12/2007, -31/+6man i thought this was the actual flash developing system
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16some people are never satisfied
- davr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Actually, you can create flash apps using all open-source tools now, which run on linux. Also, the official Flex 2 compiler (for compiling flash 9 apps) is written in java, and also runs fine on linux. So technically, adobe supported compiling flash 9 on linux before they supported playing flash 9 on linux.
- ShadowUnseen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Why did rayishu's reasonable comment get digged down? I thought it would be Flash 9 too.... the title didn't say it was only the player.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Wow, I can finally stop listening to my linux user's group whine about not being able to play flash videos.
- Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Holy cow it works on amd64 seemlessly. I can finally stop whining.
- spacecowboy420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Didn't work on mine - you sure you're running the 64bit kernel?
- Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4spacecowboy, no i am running linux and have no idea what kernel i am running.
Just ***** with you- of course I am running a kernel for amd64. - jk3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The question is, are you running a 64 bit browser?
- boblmartens, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Is it time to maybe break out my Ubuntu disk and install?
- dmason, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Flash was the killer app that held you back?
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Isn't edgy coming out in november? maybe see how that's doing and if it's worth it, wait that extra 14 days
- KhaaL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Actually, edgy will be released at the end of october and the RC is going to be released today
- RandallBe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Video is great but can't get sound :/ well its beta and its getting closer go Adobe.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you can't get sound it's because you need ALSA. If you do not have ALSA, sound with silently fail. If you do have ALSA then you need to configure it properly.
It says that somewhere on Adobe's site. - RandallBe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Seems to be a intel chipset issue I tried my desktop and its a sblive and works fine.
- TiCL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually this issue will popup more on motherboards with built-in sound chips that have terrible H/W mixing capabilities. My VA-10 board with VIA8233 sound chip is choking on Flash9 even in YouTube (Flash7 content). Sometimes the video freezes, although I can see the progress bar moving, sometimes there is no audio. FF 1.5 froze on http://www.nbc.com/conan. Videos on http:///www.foxnews.com still does not show any video (only audio). The worst thing is, once audio chokes I have to restart FF to get sound back. But, I think this is an issue with H/W mixing of VIA chips (and also Intel as the parent says). I will try out DMix or Jack for s/w mixing, hope goes well.
PS: Yes, I have ALSA enabled.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you can't get sound it's because you need ALSA. If you do not have ALSA, sound with silently fail. If you do have ALSA then you need to configure it properly.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's working great for me! I can finally use Goowy! w00t.
- n_md, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is great! Trying it now...
But what about *BSD?! Daemon is sad. :(- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4linux compatability mode :D
it's just a kernel module that lets bsd's read linux binaries, not some emulation so it works just as fast as linux would. - sancho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think Linux compatibility includes ALSA support.
- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4linux compatability mode :D
- n0yd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Works great, Arch Linux just packaged it and put it in the [unstable] repo about 30 minutes ago. :)
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And for the rest of us, there's a pkgbuild in AUR that's working great for me :)
Now, i finally realize how little i used flash in the first place... - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...and for the REST of us, you can copy libflashplayer.so into /opt/netscape/plugins and gflashplayer into /usr/bin .
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And for the rest of us, there's a pkgbuild in AUR that's working great for me :)
- mwales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm running it on 64-bit edgy right now. Line Flyer was sorta slow.
- starheart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6http://proton.cygnusx-1.org/~edgan/flash/flash-plugin-9.0.21.55-1.i386.rpm
I took Warren's, a Red Hat employee who works on the Fedora Project, 7.0.28 spec file and created an rpm for 9.0.21.55. Seems to work very well. - jrishel, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1anyone got a ubuntu deb yet?
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You don't need it. Just run this command from the folder extracted from the archive.
sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/
Remember to restart Firefox! - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does anyone know why I can't get it to work?
I copied it to the above folder but everytime I restart firefox and check about:plugins, it says I'm using version 7.0r63 .... I did have flash7 installed before this, but i removed the libflahsplayer.so file from all plugin folders before copying the new one.
Any ideas?
I know this is not a support forum ;) but wth - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2mercurysquad: You probably have firefox installed in a different location
- visability, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thats because it goes in ~/.mozilla/plugins or /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes I did try all those locations. Cleaned out the harddrive of any copies of libflashplayer.so, downloaded again and tried every location one by one... everytime it got detected after restarting firefox, it was Flash 7.
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have Flash 7 installed in the general plugins directory(for all users) but I took this one and put it in ~/.mozilla/plugins, and it uses Flash 9 instead of Flash 7, even though about:plugins shows both 7 and 9.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Make sure you remove all copies of flash listed in Synaptic. That could cause troubles.
- Dumbledore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1uh, i can't move or delete the files in /usr because i don't have the right permission. help anyone?
- mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You have to be using root (administrator).
This is usually accomplished by running 'su' in the terminal or if your in ubuntu just prefix whatever command your using with 'sudo'.
Note, if you ever need a root terminal in ubuntu just use 'sudo sh' and it will start a bash shell under root. - Tuxbunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did it by replacing both /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so and ~/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so. Also delete the pluginreg.dat files. You use sudo rm to remove a file not in your home dir. Also if you want to, just use gksudo nautilus to open up nautilus in root and you can remove/add/copy files that way.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You don't need it. Just run this command from the folder extracted from the archive.
- aten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1to be exact: 9.0 r21d75

- MIC4311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1working on SuSE 10.1 fine so far. i can see the swarm now! sweet.
- aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YES
thanks so much, finally! - pr0cty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works on ubuntu edgy. Simple enough, havent seen any bugs
- Moparx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is working great on the sites I have tested thus far as well :)
- ChrisRX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally! Flash plugin doesn't take over my soundcard now. I get super sexy alsa mixing.
- iamthewalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who needs a ubuntu deb?
im running dapper. i just copied it straight into plugins and my 600mhz p3 laptop started crankin out peanut butter jelly time. awesome job, hopefully adobe'll get their acquired macromedia buddies to convert the rest of their stuff to linux. incredible!
btw-here's a list of dependencies and their ubuntu/deb apt equivalents (in the right hand column). try this if it doesnt work immediately and i almost promise itll fix it.

Try asking a DEVeloper?
If you install the K/X/Ubuntu package for flash and then just copy this file to your plugins dir, close and reopen FF. Visit your favorite flash website that would not work before and watch it work now.
I'm so happy I crapped my pants. I'm playing games now and watching videos that didn't have a chance before. Thank you Adobe.
- dudeman2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine still doesnt work...
I put sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/ and I get a normal response in the terminal, I restart firefox and it still doesnt work:
bob@bob-desktop:~/Desktop/flash-player-plugin-9.0.21.55$ sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/
bob@bob-desktop:~/Desktop/flash-player-plugin-9.0.21.5- iamthewalrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0try apt-getting (or whatever your distro allows) the packages i listed
- jlward4th, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In your browser go to the url:
about:plugins
and see if it's listed.
You can also make sure you have all the dependencies by doing:
ldd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so
If all the dependencies are resolved, then try copying the libflashplayer.so to:
~/.mozilla/plugins/ - gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make sure you've removed previous versions of Flash in Synaptic.
- bdxphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does libflashplayer.so need to be chmod a+x for it to work?
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dbxpheonix
Just unpack it and copy it into the folder. Restart your browser. That's it. Nothing more. - diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2run "updatedb", then "slocate libflashplayer.so"...find where your default location for your old libflashplayer.so is and copy the new one over it.

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151894 - dudeman2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1still lost...
can someone give me step by step instructions because aparantly just copying this file into the plugins does not work- Professa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try 'chmod 755 libflashplayer.so' and see if that works
- dudeman2000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2yeah its still version 7
but i did type sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/- stylesP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did you uninstall/remove the flashplayer 7 plugin?
- sathia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5thank you adobe.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2OK.
This seems to be a HOAX. I have now tested every method and every location, and each time it shows up as Flash Player 7. Yes it works on YouTube, but try going to wii.nintendo.com and look at the top of the page. Also try about:plugins, says v7.0r63
Sorry guys....- jlward4th, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make sure you don't have multiple versions of libflashplayer.so and that you have restarted your browser.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah did that....... removed all previous copies of libflashplayer and flashplayer.xpt and then copied the new one again....
Judging by dudeman2000's post below, could it be because I'm using Firefox 2.0 release candidate that comes with edgy beta? - Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wii.nintendo.com worked for me, although I had to do a couple things.
First, I'm using flashblock, so I had to click it to load it... then it just sat there being all white until I right clicked and chose "Play". Then the menu came up and worked just fine. (Yeah, all that for a flash menu that only does a fading highlight effect. Blah.) - gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not a hoax, other people have gotten it working. You obviously haven't gotten v7 completely removed. Try looking in Synaptic.
- stylesP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1restart your browser ;)
- dudeman2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok now for swiftfox it still says version 7, but for the reqular firefox it is version 9
I assume that is normal - urbanight23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Holy crap, A/V syncing!!!! and on the day I got translucency working too. Its like christmas for a tech dork!
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5its amazing, good work! I have been using linux for almost 7 years now, and I can remember when we had only netscape working and the browser was so clunky and broken, now with flash 9 support and mozilla/firefox I can enjoy a better web experience than any PC or Mac user I know since I use mplayerplug-in for all video content and the fact that I can make any video fullscreen makes windows / mac users drool...
God I love linux.. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How come the standalone mac version is PPC and not a UB? It's ***** me off to open a .swf in a browser just for smooth playback.
- RompeRatones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1minimum req: 512Ram +Graphics Memory (128MB)
with 256RAM +64 Onboard, my machine is good enough to run a livecd loaded in ram memory , but i guess is not good enought for a plugin.
/me not happy- BigBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've got it working on *far* less right now, so try it out.
- Brightside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok this will make everything work nicely (if about:plugins still shows version 7)
After copying the new *.so to the directory (and deleting the *.xpt)
cd ~/.mozilla/firefox/
rm pluginreg.dat
Restart Firefox - latour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1works great!
- dioxmat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess nobody else but me cares, but it doesn't work with the pulseaudio alsa plugin on linux. (version 7 did since it supported esd, even though it had some problems) It creates something like ~ 30 phantom playback streams, no sound at all, and these error messages:
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to create stream. over and over. Too bad, I was this close to the perfect setup: http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup since it's the only thing that's giving me trouble :( - skelly6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Totaly linux newbie - sorry. What am I doing wrong? I "gunzip" the file, and then it won't do anything at all. It isn't a directory, and if I make it executable, it just says:
fp9_update_b1_standalone_linux: cannot execute binary file
The flash7 installer made a folder with an install file. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for any help! I really want to get this thing to work!!- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It should give you a folder with the plugin and a readme file in it. Try tar -zxf FP9_plugin_beta_101806.tar.gz. -z tells tar to filter it through gunzip, -x tells it to extract the files, and -f tells it which file to operate on.
- mccord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3finally!
if i could digg twice, i would :P - sancho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone manage to get it working in Opera yet?
- mccord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2works fine :)
i just replaced the old libflashplayer.so in ~/.opera/plugins and restarted opera

BTW, ldd shows that it is linked to 32 bt libraries - jordan314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How the heck do you develop for flash 9? I have flash 8 and all it can save in is flash 8.
- njadobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Flash 9 (the authoring tool) is still in beta for Windows and Mac. You can get a preview release on Adobe Labs:

You can also develop applications for Flash Player 9 using the free Flex 2 SDK, which was released a couple of months ago. Flex lets you build Flash apps by writing code (as opposed to using the Flash authoring tool). The SDK (compiler + framework) runs on Linux as well as Mac and Windows, and comes with source code for the Flex framework.

There's also an Eclipse-based IDE (Flex Builder) that costs $499 (it doesn't run on Linux currently though).
nj (Adobe) - Novemberain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Flex Builder 2 can be used as Eclipse plugin with a trick. You need to install it to existing Eclipse copy on win, then copy plugin files to Eclipse on Linux and it works.
