- joebaloney, on 03/16/2009, -2/+36There is no objective way to measure a generic "best". Popularity is probably as good an indicator as anything.
- FapCommander, on 03/15/2009, -3/+30Arch ftw!!!
- srg13, on 03/16/2009, -1/+28The worst thing about cars is that there are TOO MANY DIFFERENT models. I should only have to choose between the Toyota Camry Basic, Camry Business, Camry Premium Basic, Camry Starter or the Camry Ultimate.
- drrlvn, on 03/15/2009, -14/+40Dugg for Gentoo.
- dmorris68, on 03/16/2009, -1/+21Wow, my fellow Linux geeks never cease to amaze me with their fanboism. Hating on Ubuntu? I've been using and developing on Linux for 14-odd years, long before the days of package/dependency managers, when you built your own kernels and apps from source and figured out the dependencies on your own. Started with Slackware, moved to RH3, toyed with several others (including Mandrake, Suse, Debian) but mostly stayed with RH up until Fedora 6 when they finally ruined it for me. I jumped ship to Ubuntu and have been quite happy with it so far, both Desktop and Server. So don't think *all* seasoned Linux users have their hate on for Ubuntu, some of us are fine with it.
- korvins, on 03/16/2009, -3/+22For any desktop usage there are only 3 real distributions: Ubuntu, OpenSUSE and Fedora.
You can forget about the rest, unles you want to setup a server, are a freak or something related. - lear, on 03/16/2009, -6/+24ubuntu (linux for the human) all the way....geeks can go somewhere. lol
- thinkb4utype, on 03/16/2009, -3/+20They missed the real reason for Mint's popularity. The non-USA version has media drivers already loaded. Media players work right after setup. Ubuntu makes you find the codecs in the repository. You have to load them yourself after checking a box that the drivers may violate proprietary patents or copyrights (which is why Ubuntu doesn't load them). Mint saves you the trouble and is easier to install completely.
- robrohan, on 03/16/2009, -0/+17Question: What kind of bear is best?
- daftman, on 03/16/2009, -0/+14Don't forget trucks, vans, motorbikes, SUVs, UTEs, etc...
OMFG i'm so overwhelmed!!! - abbathdoom, on 03/16/2009, -2/+16Getting codecs on Ubuntu is a total cakewalk these days. To say people use Mint simply for codecs is retarded. Theres at least 10 other reasons someone might find Mint easier to use, eg. the more Windows style Start Menu. To put it down to codecs is missing the point.
- WOMPA, on 03/16/2009, -0/+12I can't believe they didn't include brakes in Camry Basic. It crashes constantly.
- amfantasy, on 03/15/2009, -4/+16This looks the most popular distributions, not really the best
- srg13, on 03/16/2009, -1/+13"There are so many usability mistakes in it, starting from even the first screen users see (the grub menu on the LiveCD installer with lots of functions nobody understands without checking)"
That's actually not Grub, it's Isolinux. But still, while it may be a little confusing, 'Install or Run Ubuntu' is pretty self-explanatory. - Gareth321, on 03/16/2009, -8/+19This is the pathetic Linux mentality that kept me away from Linux for so long. You make regular computer users feel utterly inadequate and stupid. We have to start somewhere and when I installed Ubuntu, I had no idea codecs didn't come with it. Thankfully a nicer person than you explained the situation and directed me to the right place.
- Slade605, on 03/16/2009, -0/+11Personally I think the Toyota Camry Server 2003 is pretty reliable.
- csrster, on 03/16/2009, -1/+12Of course, but some suck longer, harder, and better than others.
- azureskies88, on 03/16/2009, -1/+12Especially considering that a distribution is only as useful as its community for many users.
- mbfielding, on 03/16/2009, -0/+10False. Black bear.
- brianpeiris, on 03/16/2009, -0/+9That's a ridiculous question.
- The2DQuartet, on 03/16/2009, -0/+9I think that poll is more 'What do you use?' than 'What is best?' You can't really even say which is your favourite from a given list without having tried them all. I chose not to vote as I've only used PCLinuxOS (briefly), Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Fedora and gOS (which is also based on Ubuntu).
I'm not just another Ubuntu fanboy, I just haven't had time to really test many distros - cjnkns, on 03/16/2009, -0/+9Fedora 10 is really nice OS IMHO...
- robdiggity, on 03/16/2009, -3/+11Gummi.
- phaedrusiszen, on 03/16/2009, -1/+8It wasn't till I settled into Gentoo that I really started to enjoy Linux.
- exspasticcomics, on 03/16/2009, -1/+8um... there's only 5 or 6 major distros that all other distros are based on... this is pretty much that same list...
1) debian (ubuntu & mint are based on this...)
2) red hat (aka fedora...)
3) suse
4) slackware (..isn't arch derived from slackware.. or is it derived from another distro?)
5) gentoo
6) mandriva (though to be fair.. long.. long ago- this was derived from red hat.. though it's gone it's own direction long ago..)
I don't think there are many sorcerer users out there.. & BSD not linux. - okpgreg, on 03/16/2009, -0/+7I voted Ubuntu and have tried Fedora, CentOS, Sabayon, and openSUSE recently. Nevermind how many distro's I've tried/used over the years.
- theaceoffire, on 03/16/2009, -0/+7They replaced that.
Now they have "Try Ubuntu without Installing" and "Install Ubuntu". A lot more clear in my opinion. - strictnein, on 03/16/2009, -0/+7Wait a second, you're saying that it's the "nerds" presenting it to their managers as cutting edge? I think you have the roles reversed.
- skeptictank, on 03/16/2009, -1/+8It's nice to see Linux stuff here but "5 best distros"? That's like saying "5 best sandwiches", it's purely subjective.
I like Centos with cheese myself. - Gareth321, on 03/16/2009, -3/+9I learned that I should try mint =)
- Jektal, on 03/16/2009, -0/+6If you've had 50+ desktop machines you're a freak or something related.
- 4321234, on 03/16/2009, -2/+8Of the 7800 who voted Ubuntu, 0 had tried the other distros.
Of the 2000 who voted other distros, all had tried ubuntu. - carlosos, on 03/16/2009, -1/+7SuSE was always a great distribution. It was a little sad when Novel bought them and changed the default window manager from KDE to Gnome but it is still one of the best KDE supporting distributions. It was the first major distribution with 64bit support while it took others at least on more year for that support.
It is probably the easiest distribution with one of the best hardware support (if not the best hardware support).
I tried many different distributions and I always came back to SuSE.
The Microsoft deal my have hurt their reputation but it is still a great product. You should try it once. - DivineMonkey, on 03/16/2009, -0/+6Glad Arch made the list. Been using it for about a year and don't think i'll ever switch to another distro.
- abbathdoom, on 03/16/2009, -1/+7Polar.

They all hate on Ubuntu because mainstream users can actually use and update the system with little knowledge of linux.
Geeks generally want the obscurity to remain with *nix, that way they can pretend to be better/different than the "standard" user. - nadeau, on 03/16/2009, -2/+7Dugg for not including Zenwalk !
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -0/+5There are basically two schools of thought.
- jsffive, on 03/16/2009, -0/+5If you combine Ubuntu, Debian, and Linux Mint under one heading, then that leaves PCLOS in the number five spot at distro watch... and Gentoo and Arch are much further down the list. Why didn'
t he lump PCLOS with Fedora for that matter?
I like PCLOS. It doesn't use debian repos, but I haven't had a problem installing anything from the Synaptic Package Manager using the RPM repos yet. I have Compiz Fusion, and Virtual Box.
That article is purely subjective. - joebaloney, on 03/16/2009, -1/+6I'm with you. I've been using Linux for about 5 years exclusively. I was originally on Mandrake during the Mandriva shift. When I got a new laptop from work, I tried every Linux I could think of and none of them worked out of the box to fully support laptop. My criteria was work out of the box and I can fix it from there. I decided to try Ubuntu which was relatively new at the time and everything worked flawlessly. I have been using it ever since. I briefly tried SUSE and Debian not long ago and wasn't really thrilled with either and went back to Ubuntu.
The thing is, its freaking Linux and GNU + whatever apps you want. I don't understand the morons who act like it is fundamentally different somehow. Just because its popular doesn't automatically make it bad. - jbhannah, on 03/16/2009, -1/+5Ah, the good ol' days of the Stage 1 install.
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -2/+6JavaFX is a better choice than the Microsoft Mafia's Silverblight.
http://www.javafx.com/ - nadadingsda, on 03/16/2009, -0/+4What is best for you really depends on what you want/need. For myself, I use Gentoo, mostly because it allows you to setup your system exactly the way you want it to be, it has a huge package repository, good support from other users, and it is what I have been using for a long time.
My girlfriend on the other hand uses Kubuntu, as she pretty much wants something that just works (and it actually does). She was first using Ubuntu but then she became jealous when she saw KDE 4.2 on my laptop.. - srg13, on 03/16/2009, -5/+9"This is the pathetic Linux mentality that kept me away from Linux for so long. "
I think he's actually right - when you first try to play an unsupported file, it pops up a window that requires you to check one checkbox and click 'Install'. It also explains why it would be illegal for it to come with them. - garrettg84, on 03/16/2009, -1/+5@joebaloney
only the yankees actually do suck... - joebaloney, on 03/16/2009, -1/+5@4321234 Is this your attempt at making a point by fabricating clearly untrue statistics?
Jesus I never understand people who automatically hate anything popular. Even within a fairly small community like Linux, turds like you sling dirt at the users of a "popular" Linux because clearly anyone who isn't an idiot would use a Linux that is much less common!
Just because you hate the Yankees and Toyota doesn't mean they suck. - mattvogt, on 03/16/2009, -0/+4Absurd. It's like making a list of the top 5 applications. Linux is so flexible that it's about what's best for the individual/purpose.
- theaceoffire, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3It would be nice to have a "Fix Boot Menu" option on the main page.
- nkassi, on 03/16/2009, -1/+4I agree. I start in 2001 and was for the longest time a Gentoo fan but after a while I got bored (and frustrated with it's issues at the time, gentoo circa 2005-6 sucked) with it and just wanted to get something working in a hurry. Ubuntu was perfect for that and apt/dpkg always had the features I needed when I wanted more power.
Ubuntu is not the enemy, it's free and open as much as the others are. Frankly anyone claiming canonical is not giving back is an idiot. A large portion of work done on ubuntu is by canonical employees.
Arch might be the next distro I try. -
