- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+80I don't know what you're talking about, that phone looks pretty sick.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36i think thats a pretty sexy phone myself.. especially the green colour theyve got going on.
Citrus is love.
the majority of "slick" phones that people buy i think are horribly ugly.. and more often than not just copy a design off some other company.
Depending on how things so.. id buy one of these. - InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35You can't have it all. And I would prefer to have a programmable phone rather than a sleek one.
- PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Thank god there's a movement towards this. I don't have a cell, and it is SOLELY because I hate technology that is intentionally crippled for the purpose of extracting every possible penny that they can get out of you. I take a picture and then have to pay a buck or so to download the 60k file? Screw you, networks. I spent money to get a camera in my phone, so you don't own my pictures.
In this day and age there is no reason why every phone shouldn't save content straight to flash. They should be able to be mounted as a removable disk over USB. Contacts should be saved as vcards, ringtones should be nothing more than wavfiles, I could go on and on.
There is no reason this doesn't happen apart from the fact that the the tech is crippled on purpose. People have come to accept this gouging as normal and a fair deal because it's been going on for so long. I don't know to what degree a programmable phone will be able to change this, but it sure is step in the right direction. Mind you, it's going to be a long, uphill stuggle, given that we live in a world where making your phone belt out stupid-sounding renditions of ***** pop songs everytime you get a call has been turned into something cool and hence a $100M/year industry. Jeez.
/rant. - r00b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16That is quite possibly one of the coolest looking phones I've ever seen. I want one.
What is the actual purpose of the phone? Can I buy one and use it with my current provider? (Aliant) - albel65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Im a sucker for green. I love it.
- DesireCampbell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The seven hundred is for developers, the phone's not meant for, or yet being sold to, customers. Secen hundred bucks for a prototype and dev kits is a *****' steal.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I think it looks pretty cool, but it is a bit expensive though! Well just have to wait and let the price come down. Hopefully it will catch on, and more manufacturers would adopt this type of cell phone.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Detritus: WM5 is closed source. It's not competition. We don't all have a vendetta against MS, but I do have one with Windows CE (it's terrible, sorry I just don't like the interface at all).
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'd excited to see what kind of programs are written for the phone. (and what networks it will use)
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Imagine a beowulf cluster of these...
ah a trip down memory lane, and cliche ally, and nerd avenue. - deeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yes it does. GSM - 850, 900, 1800, 1900

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
It's an order of magnitude better than the (practically useless) Pocket IE at any rate. - aptiva, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yes but it's not standardized, *nix is.
So a program for one phone is much more likely to work for another if both run linux - deeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+72.4.19
http://www.trolltech.com/products/qtopia/phone_edition/greenphone/greenphonespecs - deeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is a cellphone software developer phone. It is for developers who want to program apps for Qtopia, the GUI environment made by trolltech for cellphones (and other handheld devices).
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It would be nice to have a celly that's tiny browser is gecko engine based.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Usually most of the unlocked SmartPhones are also pretty programable, the SDK is free (at least for PocketPC, not sure about SmartPhone), so this is not such an inovative idea.
But it's nice to have more options to chose from. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's an awesome phone.
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I actually like the look of that camera :S
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So what I wana know is... what about me? When will I be able to get one without paying 700$, and what will I be able to do with it once i get it? Can I still mess with the OS code if I want, or do I have to buy the devkit?
This actually made me want to give in to the weird phenomenon that is cell phones. - rivviepop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6deeek - it is not a quad band phone, it is triband; I started a thread asking them directly. The phone has no 850 and no WiFi.
http://www.qtopia.net/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=196&forum=13
yay, yet another phone without 850. The US is like the red-headed stepchild of the GSM industry... - kindernacht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i couldn't possibly have put it better myself. i moved up to new hampshire almost a year ago, and due to lack of coverage, i cancelled my cingular account. and all the gouging is the only reason i haven't gotten another one yet. it really is something that i need , since my business is all on the road for onsite PC repair. but i refuse to be butt raped for reasonable service and plans...
99 cnts for a ringtone, which is a little clip from a song i already bought and paid 99 cnts for on my computer...no...just no. and forget pictures, that's why i carry my little DV digi cam around with me. i can wait out this crap.
...story dugg for cool tech though - kaybee5225, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree that this phone looks amazing, in fact I have dugg it twice - as it was submitted by deviceguru about a month ago... you can find the original story here:
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS8030785497.html
And deeek was right, this phone is meant for developers. It would be fantastic for users to have access to it, but it is obviously extremely overpriced at this point because it is not ready for the market.
I definitely want one once it's ready though. Obviously we are all digg users and all support the programmable/customizeable content, so this phone can only be mean good things. - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know about Minimo's reputation but Nokia ported WebKit for their S60 browser, and yes it is open source.
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4hardware would be a start.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Any possibility someone will write gtk libraries so that we aren't forced into using Qt?
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The only worry I have is the keypad might press buttons when its in your pocket, bag, holder, w/e, and a hold key might not be enough. But who knows, maybe someone will make a DIY flip cover for it! Definitely an awsome idea for a phone, though!
- Complexium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Norwegian Trolltech is awesome. I look forward to see some more Linux-powered smartphones in the future.
- rivviepop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5PFS1 - take a look at your recent Motorola and Nokia GSM handsets; all the more recent ones fully support OBEX file transfer and mounting the device as a USB mass storage device. My ringtones are MIDI/AAC (mp3 if desired), my contacts can be exported the external microSD as vCards, and so on. Don't get locked into whatever a carrier will criple you with, buy a real, unbranded phone from the manufacturer and enjoy freedom.
There's a cultural mindset difference - most Americans expect to get their phones for free, or at a heavily subsudized price, then complain about why it's crippled. You can't have your cake and eat it too. :) - Simon80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4judging by the article, yes, there is the possibility for someone to change things up, if they release the source, which it would appear that they are doing... but it's always hard to find info on exactly how much of the source is open, and what the license is and such... With the 770, for example, the best explanation of the architechture is in a pretty chart that is very vague, and it's hard to find any more info. Then again, why you wouldn't want to use Qt is beyond me, but I'm not gonna feed the troll here.
Still, The tech exists for us to have a consolidated phone/wifi/pda/media player, but nobody's doing it, except maybe MS, and I wouldn't be caught dead willingly investing my time in a Microsoft platform. Go ahead people, call me a fanboy, call me a hater, but this isn't some silly subjective debate, MS has built their entire business around vendor lockin and abuse of existing market position, and they've readily demonstrated that they care about themselves first, and their users not at all, and there are plenty of examples to reinforce this point of view, so I just stay the hell away. - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that is a cool looking cellphone, i want one :)
digg it & dugg it - Zanneth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought the phone looked really cool. Green is a neat color.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3XGL/Compiz on a phone....mmmmmm. I can dream.
- Strd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually N70 one of the last opened Symbian phones. N70 have Symbian 8.0a, which is the last open version of Symbian OS. Starting form Symbian 9.1 Symbian introduced mandatory Symbian Signed. Only application signed by symbian appointed test-houses allowed to be installed. There is an option for "self-signed" application, but it's limited and require developer to jump through the loops. Symbian 9.1 effectivly killed symbian freeware and open source community
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Check out the focus slider on the side of the lens. Looks well thought out.
I think that's a focus slider... - kindernacht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@rivviepop
granted, if you go out...and decide to spend copius amounts of money on a newer phone you can transfer pics to your pc, upload songs to the phone, and do numerous other things. i can't say much about that, because i haven't bought a phone in over two years. but what irritates me more than the outrages prices of some phones, is the crazy plans that providers offer. i've looked into it time and time again. and i can say for myself, that i'm not trying to get something for free...i just want a fair deal. the price for broadband data usage, messaging, and free nights/weekends...gimmie a break. not to mention you have to pay ridiculous amounts for any good stipend of anytime minutes. not worth it IMHO...but thats just humble little me - 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I take a picture and then have to pay a buck or so to download the 60k file?"
WTF? (I can't think of a better expression) - Simon80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the question of whether you can use it depends on if your provider is using a CDMA network or a GSM network, since the phone is strictly a GSM phone.
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WiFi sucks battery, and would cell providors really support a phone that lets people have free (3rd party) VoIP half the time?
- philcloh2o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just dropped my Aliant cell phone for Rogers GSM, Rogers coverage is improving (slowly). And Aliants Digital Signal isnt great... Rogers GSM matches it.
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As an Aliant user myself, I feel your pain. When companies release games or apps or websites sell them, Aliant is never ever listed. Rumkin's Sprint uploader tends to work for some at least.
And the apps and games Aliant themselves provides are lackluster and/or downright crappy.
But at least they've ghot better reception and service then Rogers(even though Rogers tends to have tech a good 2 years before Aliant/Bell does).
Also, Aliant is CDMA(dammit). - kikibun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wonder what version linux kernel this uses and if it has a terminal program. This would be so cool to develop kernel modules for; image what you could do...
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm a long term Smartphone user but even I'd buy one of those, as long as it was available in other colours, had WiFi, a 2MP camera, Outlook synchronisation and the interface was brought up to the standard of WM5. After that, the expansion capabilities are endless
- dirtylobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been waiting for this since the first cell phones came out! Great news!! DUGG!!
- DrBones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its a shame they didnt throw in a wifi radio as well... Like many people, both my office and home have wifi, as well as the millions of hot spots around.... I know carriers hate it, but using VOIP seems in line with values of open source, customizable phone.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the extent to which your phone is crippled depends on your provider. the GSM providers (cingular & t-mobile) let you use whatever you please. i'm using the panasonic x800, an asia-only nokia series-60 clone. 100% isync compatibilty over bluetooth, free ringers (it uses wav files), and a great form factor. camera blows but it's good enough for drunken photos (does anyone use their camera phone for anything else?)
- coding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Trend? Sun's going to lose share in JME soon.
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want one. $700 with out a network isn't that bad considering the features. needs wifi...
Verizon is so restrictive they won't ever support this either... - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's true to some extent, but given the hardware limitations it's kind of hard to run, say, KDE or Blender on it.
Yes, one program for one Linux phone will work on Linux phone, but so will one written for SmartPhones, because SmartPhone is a standard (a subsection of WinCE). -
