- pevensen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+44Where's the story? This is just a link to a forum posting. No pictures of the machine... nothing.
- Mythguy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+47So let me get this straight.
I purchase something from a company. I enjoy my product greatly. I follow company. I see they are doing something that is new and unique and will do wonders for the linux community. I digg an article about it. I send an email to Lon telling him that I support what they are doing and that I have submitted a digg article about it. I cant help with Linux, so I support TVease in just about the only way I know how. I spread the word. Everyone here on Digg loves Ubuntu, yet when I digg an article about a company using Ubuntu in a way thats never been done commercially, you get angry. Doesnt make much sense to me.
You think thats wrong. I thought that was the very reason for digg in the first place. So that anyone who has interest in something can digg an article about it.
I dont blame them for sending an email to their forum members about it. It is no worse than putting a huge digg this button all over the article or front page which everyone does now.
I have a question though. If you got the email then you are a member of the their forums. Why then would you come on here and bash them? What does that say about you? Want attention much? - Scyth3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30Okay...so a linux UMPC...love the idea. However, where's a picture of it?!
- daveisfera, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I agree that the first guy probably freaked out a bit, but there had to be a better place to post this other than a forum. I mean even blogspam is better than this.
- TheMongo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Yeah, I'm guessing the fact that they didn't reveal the price anywhere AND the OP in the forums specifically ignored a direct question to that effect means that it's not going to be anywhere near the realm of affordability.
- n00854180t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Pictures, price? If this is based on the Q1, which is $1000, how much will this be? It's not a terribly powerful machine, so the price point, IMO, will be the stillbirth of this thing(assuming it's not less than $1k). I could build a box to do the same thing and set it up myself without too much trouble for much less, with better specs. I just don't see the incentive unless the kit is going to be $500 or less.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Linux on a UMPC?
At least it will suck less... - sirhomer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7So.. this company is buying an existing product and putting Linux on it? Am I suppose to be impressed?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5UMPCs are just in a crappy no-man's land of form factor. They're too big to put in your pocket, but too small to do any real productivity on. I don't see where the market is for these...
- BGPEREIRA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5ASUS showed their UMPC Model E3 PC with 7" screen, @ dealer $199, and retail (allasus taking preorders) $250, projected to arrive end July. They have a 10" model in the works for end August may-be; @ dealer $299. - this was on DIGG in June.
- Mythguy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7They are adding the machine to their store later this week. The forum post has the picture of a samsung Q1 they are going to use along with the specs and the discussion they are having with their members about it. They are not a large company and dont do press releases and things like that. All their products so far have come from discussions like this on their forums.
Basically they have an idea, post it, the community says whether they like it or not, then they build it.
They take pretty much all their member feedback seriously and even let their members name the Zodiac which is their newest media center. If you want to actually have a say and influence this project and product, become a member and join the conversation. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Messy page... :-)
- n1qaw, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I wish there was like a digg sub basement where we could put story that link to junk blogs...DONT READ WASTE OF TIME
- ChewMyFootOff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4No picture + no price = no digg
- n00854180t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Where's it say the price? Or are you basing it on the Q1 price? I think it'd actually have to be *more* expensive, given the added stuff.
- n00854180t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I was thinking the same thing. Seems pretty dodgy. It's a great concept, but basing it on an already highly overpriced machine is a BAD IDEA (TM).
- JitMaster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not available this week, only plans.
- GoldyFish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3umm, doesn't it need to have an x86 compatible processor to be a UMPC, else its just a mobile device?
- OkinawanMatt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6There already IS a linux UMPC. It's the Nokia 700 or Nokia N800. They're both a UMPC running BSD and an alternative linux version created by Nokia (Maemo). The N800 is great for Skype, web browsing, taking notes, and e-mails. Not much more. It's more of an expensive gadget for tech enthusiasts, but can be used in te business environment. They are also user-modifiable, all the way to the kernel level and the ROM.
- palmer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Yet here it is on the front page.
PATHETIC. This is unreal. Digg is so often lame, but this has to be one of the lamest posts ever to make the front page. - MBHoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3$250 max and you've got a sale. My guess is 5 times that, but whatever.
- shuffle2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2small (in fact, tiny) laptops have been available for some time. check out fujitsu's line of crazy small laptops. My cousin has one, and it is amazingly portable, and yet functional, unlike UMPCs.
- BGPEREIRA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ $999 It really sucks!!!!
- Gaki, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree. You already have PDAs and smartphones filling the "gotta be ultramobile" field and the smaller notebooks for the power users on the go. Where is the advantage of a UMPC, the one thing that will sell either of those camps and get them to migrate? Small screen, bulky form factor, lousy battery life ... where's the plus?
My dream design would be a 5" LCD surrounded only by a narrow bezel. The only buttons would be the power button at the top and a "context" button to give you a right click simulation while still maintaining a pen or touch interface. Connectivity would be wifi, 3G and bluetooth on the wireless side, USB x 2 on the physical side. A card slot for external storage and an ARM processor for efficiency and you are done. Put Linux on it with a custom built interface and window manager and I would buy it in a second. Call it a Palm on steroids. - javaroast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Your argument would work, but the lameness of this post and your posting history makes this one nothing more than spam. Buried as such.
- kyrre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Did you read the forum thread? There are two questions about price. Somehow the guy conveniently fail to respond to them. However other questions he responds to in detail. Why can he not give out the price or just state that the price is to be announced. Vaporware or a very expensive gadget?
- SniperSlap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is a forum post...
- rhettmaxwell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2isn't the tv feed for mythtv going to die soon? have i missed the solution for this problem?
- cybermage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Read the thread - it's NOT going to be available next week. It's a "concept" they are "hashing out".
Not newsworthy. Buried for being inaccurate. - BGPEREIRA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Try ASUS model E3 PC @ $250 for 7" (allasus.com taking preorders). or wait till August for the 10" model for may be $350
- palmer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2WTF are you talking about? The guy rightfully attacked an absolutely worthless post, and in very polite and reasonable terms.
Meanwhile, your response isn't even intelligible. Go back to elementary school and start over. - Ratteler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Uhmm... PepperPad3 has been shipping for since last September. Linux based and simular specs.
- Tenoq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Battery life will still be it's downfall though. Reading the Q1 specs on the Samsung site, you only get 1.4H DVD playback. When it's actually got 10 hours of DVD playback or more it might be viable, but 1.4 hours is nowhere near enough runtime.
- RubberBinder, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000GR3XDS/interactiveda683-20
Looks like it will be expensive - richbleak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Thank god the Digg police are out in droves. What would I do without their unbridled, pedantic nerd-rage? If this is the ONLY information on this product, then take what you can get if you want it. Otherwise, use the system in place to bury it. We don't need some ham-fisted attempt at fake outrage every time there is a submission that doesn't fit a minority of user's arbitrary definitions of what is or isn't acceptable. I, for one, am glad to hear about a device that looks nice and is something I have never heard of. Thanks Mythguy.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I've got the Q1 Ultra (newer version) and it's even slower than this one, I put Ubuntu on it and it runs pretty damned fast compared to the default Vista. Totally usable except the common linux monitor resolutions problems.
- StuBeck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1He needs to learn how to spell.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2if you have to ask the price, you cannot afford it.
I wish someone would remake a device in this form factor that is expandable, networkable and backlit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psion_Revo .. I don't like any of the new designs today. too impractical for me, and they are all poor copies of each other in terms of user interface and industrial design. - saitama, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Great. But they don't ship outside the US...
- Mythguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If you read through the thread they are going to have this available for purchase by Friday.
- n00854180t, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I agree people should link to blogs...but this isn't one. It's a forum, where one of the head people involved in the project is posting details about it. So, stop being a dumbass.
- MBHoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Update:
Page two of that thread, the original poster releases some details:
"We will have a new wiki category and full specs and price later this week. We are just hashing out details at the moment."
^ Sounds like he's just fantasizing about some device, but wiki should be interested, I'll check often
When asked about a vague release date, he said:
"We are hoping Friday at the latest."
^ Now, the admin here isn't great for reading posts, so I think he meant Wiki on Friday, there's no way he could get the whole device out. Anyway, I'll reg on the site and ask some questions, keeping you posted.
Link: http://tvease.net/support/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?4584.10 - NoTiG, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2gesh UMPC. how many more acronyms are there going to be
- LordSlashstab, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2OMG! Sticker shock. I'll wait until it's around 100 usd's
- n00854180t, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2shouldn't* rather.
- GfunkGbuss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Perhaps mobile business-men that want full-fledged desktop OS, but want something easier to tote (slap in a briefcase along with all your other work requirements instead of having to get a larger case and fit your other crap in it) than a regular laptop, yet perhaps still have a full keyboard. My dad travels all the time for his work, and he wishes he had something more portable than a conventional laptop, but he still needs to be able to work spreadsheets and do basic internet functions. The people wanting these want something more powerful and useful than anything you could slip in a pocket, but want it to be lighter and easier to tote than a conventional laptop.
- theworldisround, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Seeing as they are selling a full-featured MythTV box with 1 TB of storage and tons of features for $1099 ( http://tvease.net/wiki/index.php?title=Hannibal_Version_Comparison_Chart ), I doubt they would sell this much lower quality product for more than that.
- richbleak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0....And the above ends my ham-fisted attempt at fake outrage over a comment that didn't fit my own arbitrary definitions of what is or isn't acceptable. Basically, I'm asking that you ascribe to my arbitrary definitions. I appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
- OUPablo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3the first post in the forum has a line that says "[ image disabled ]." I wonder if that has anything to do with the lack of a picture
- jennamalia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Mmmm, I loves me some vaporware. Mythguy, how about you kill this story and post again once the full specs (including price) are out, and it's available for sale?
That'd be the polite and considerate way to spam Digg. -
