- niallabrown, on 12/03/2007, -0/+32This is so exciting. I can't imagin the things these kids will learn from the information they can access with these machines.
- hadiz, on 12/03/2007, -3/+24Really, the submitter schestowitz was there to hand out the first one? Amazing! Oh, he forgot to use quotes.
- hartley, on 12/03/2007, -1/+18Now I will receive e-mails saying I won the Uruguay National Lottery.
- T8erT0T, on 12/03/2007, -0/+12They will speaking the phrase in their native language "pics or it didn't happen" from here on out.
- muller, on 12/03/2007, -1/+9Yeah, like 2 girls 1 cup!
- fmc6338, on 12/03/2007, -1/+9 I hope that these kids are not as stupid as most of the comments on DIGG.
- MrSteamTank, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7As a Uruguayan I really hope this pans through. Uruguay, realizes that with no real resources other than agriculture that their only hope to improve themselves is through technology. Uruguay is the 4th-5th richest country in all America(Tied with Argentina after United States, Canada, and Chile) so it's not doing badly at all. It's population is literate and fairly well educated. It just can't really get to the developed status of most European countries without developing it's technology sector which hopefully this will accomplish.
- Rikkochet, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7It's a ***** Simpsons quote from the ep when they went to Australia!
What kind of nerds are you?! - dezman2003, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7Please don't let them discover 419 scamming.

nevermind - Sketchcast, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5What makes you think that just because you live in the most wasteful society in history, that the developing would would follow suit? Developing nations tend to make due with what they have, North Americans could learn a thing or two from them. I'll bet these machines will be in use for many years to come.
- nonNewtonian, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5What a beautiful sight. Here's hoping these young laptop beneficiaries will be future generations of MIT grads.
- ChuqAU, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4If you = North American, that is.
- nanostream, on 12/03/2007, -1/+5What ever happened with the Nigerian keyboard case?
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/03/2007, -2/+6Before I checked your profile, I had assumed based on your comment that you were American.
Oh, well, good to know that there are people embarrassing countries other than mine. - potifar, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4You can have one too!
http://laptopgiving.org - ordminute, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4Most of the kids that receive these laptops will have running water, TV and perhaps even cell-phones.
They simply don't have computers and so are comparitively challenged with less education and employment opportunities.
The Developing World doesn't mean "on the brink of starvation". - Phocion55, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3"OLPC Give One, Get One program extended -- averaging $2M sales per day"

I guess you can call it a "failure" the day you touch more than 2 million dollars. - amonroy, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3The goal of the OLPC project is not so much what kids will learn from the information they can access but what they will learn from what they can create with the laptop. The laptop was created with the goal of being an "expression machine". Creating rather than consuming is one of the tenets of the Constructionist pedagogy on which the OLPC was developed. It will be hard to break the traditional educational model focused mostly on delivering information but N. Negroponte calls it a "Troy horse" for that reason.
- dezman2003, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2Sorry that was harsh I just mean that we are talking about helping these people get an education, not about them having a shower.
- etsa, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2good read.. Great stuff. I want to hack into one!
Waiting one to arrive. - penno, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2including this one? (c;
- dezman2003, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3Running water is very educational. There is a difference between being a skeptic and an idiot btw.
- penno, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2yeah that's a good point. otoh, it potentially exposes them to the world. How long until they get the information needed to make their world a better place?
- RyeBrye, on 12/03/2007, -3/+5It will be interesting to see how this pans out. I'm on the side of skeptics who say... "WTF does a child need with a laptop when they don't have running water."
- faithfreedom, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1The pattern is expired last year. According to Boston.com, the company's president is an ex-con.
- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -3/+4Buried for epic crapflooder submitter. Didn't someone else post this??
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.linux.advoc ... - penno, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2haha that's hilarious... And quite valid.
- vdog, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1We'll just digg them down or block them, the same as we always do.
- ricercia, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Thats insulting to 12 year olds!
- apollo168, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Already down? Dang.
- subgeniusd, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Hey CBS is Linux friendly!! Yay CBS. Boo ABC and Fox.
I just got finished watching that segment on TIVO. Negropante is pissed at Intel for undercutting his efforts and this was before all the Chinese cheapies started hitting the market. - the202, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the ebay shipping calculator includes Uruguay?
- jsblechman32, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1There's several videos of kids and their laptops at this website:

- kittynipples, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1White people are so generous.
- frostw, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1I think perhaps he meant clean, safe drinking water.
- lolo2007, on 03/04/2008, -0/+0And you know what will be great? the environmental problems that will be caused by these people discarding these laptops in a few years. (Years? I mean months.) You think these countries will have proper recycling programs set up?

http://game.paramegsoft.com/ - Goomba37, on 12/04/2007, -1/+0Half these retards questioning this probably live in the lap of luxury. They don't care about those who are less fortunate. Fine, it isn't a perfect solution, but what are you doing about starving kids personally? Pull your heads out of your own arse, you self absorbed cronies
