- Soldierboi, on 10/04/2008, -2/+60They've made some major changes in the GSM department. With only two clicks (once on network manager icon and once on "Auto GSM network connection") my internet connection is up and running. Not even in Windows was it that easy.
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -27/+80looks like they held onto the diarrhea colored theme :(
- adarkmethod, on 10/04/2008, -1/+37for me, tabbed nautilus is HUGE. When I'm going between servers and my machine, moving files back and forth it gets to be daunting, so tabs are a massive thing for me.
- Mootabolife, on 10/04/2008, -2/+29Adjective Animal
What's your point? - inactive, on 10/04/2008, -1/+27I'm just making it clear that I know how to change a theme, but come on. Market this thing a little. get it out of the *****.
- wontstoptalking, on 10/04/2008, -1/+23I hear Windows is a boring game anyway.
- Jholder112233, on 10/04/2008, -2/+20I know, come on guys. MOST people would love a new theme, and we know it's possible.
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -1/+18thank god for emerald
- PhailQuail, on 10/04/2008, -5/+21Now 10% less likely to fry your Ethernet!
- MemphisExNoel, on 10/04/2008, -3/+19if D.O.S.= Debian Operating System...maybe then its true
- khoa1708, on 10/04/2008, -0/+15Marge: But I fell in love with Homer Simpson! I don't want to
snuggle with "Max Power"!
Homer: Nobody snuggles with Max Power. You strap yourself in and
feel the "G"s!
Marge: Oh, Lord.
Homer: And it doesn't stop in the bedroom. Oh, no. I'm taking
charge! Kids, there's three ways to do things. The right
way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way!
Bart: Isn't that the wrong way?
Homer: Yeah, but faster! - PhailQuail, on 10/04/2008, -2/+17Clbull, that's not it, screenshots usually are of the default settings, and its appearance will be the first impression many people get.
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -6/+20Come on, people. It takes a total of three (3) clicks to change the theme. Is that really so much effort?
Believe it or not, many of us actually LIKE the warm, cozy, and welcoming brown hues of the default theme. Should Ubuntu really be expected to rework its entire visual identity just because YOU dislike like it?
Furthermore, if, whenever you see the colour brown, the first thing that you think of (and apparently can't stop thinking of) is faeces, don't you think that says more about you than it does about your operating system? - renegadeafk, on 10/04/2008, -2/+16why is it a bad idea? just because the evil m$ os has it?
- h0ly, on 10/04/2008, -0/+14Because you may have a friend coming over, who may want to check email, use Pidgin for a minute, etc.
And you wouldn't want this person to mess around your account, accidentally delete stuff, or stumble upon your porn. - fprintf, on 10/04/2008, -3/+17While I dugg this article, it seems to me this upcoming release is nothing to make a big deal out of. I don't see any huge improvements, so for many if it isn't broken it probably isn't worth getting excited about the upgrade... in other words, take your time getting the new release at the end of this month, no need to try and melt the servers!
- MavRevMatt, on 10/04/2008, -0/+13...Okay? I can name 10 things Ubuntu has but Vista doesn't.
It's not hard to make up lists of things different between Windows, Mac, and Linux.
And to rebut some of these claims...
1. You can install Google Desktop on Linux. http://desktop.google.com/linux/
2. Yes, this is one thing that needs to come in the default install of Ubuntu. However, there are many backup mechanisms for backing up the /home/ and if you want Time Machine functionality there is TimeVault https://launchpad.net/timevault/+download.
3. Have you even used Compiz? It's not just for looks, there's a great deal of functionality in it. The theme is something that I'll agree has always been a problem. The majority of people don't like it, however I and others have no problem with it, but it's not like XP ever looked any good.
4. ...It does. Gnome Partition Editor, or gParted, is included with Ubuntu, and is found in the sys. administration tools.
5. I haven't personally done this, however just a quick search shows it's possible (http://johnnyjacob.wordpress.com/2006/04/30/google ... However, instead of syncing a desktop app with an online app, why not just use Mozilla Prism + Google Gears to have Google Calendar essentially on your desktop? It makes so much more sense in todays world.
6. This "upgrade" is only present if you seek out "snipping tool" in Vista's menu. Your point is moot, especially because Vista doesn't even prompt you asking where or how you want to save the image, while Linux does.
7. There are numerous tutorials on setting up parental controls on the Ubuntu forums (looks like you've never searched for any of this before eh'?), and there are ideas on Ubuntu Brainstorm for adding parental controls. Even without any built in controls in Ubuntu, you can, via account permissions, setup a kid's account with much more limited permissions.
8. I don't know shutdown speeds of my own Vista and Ubuntu machines (aside from the fact that my Vista machine takes well over a minute), however I hardly see how it matters. For one thing, the boot-up speed, from both fully off and hibernate, is what's important to me - Not shutdown speeds.
9. http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-elisa-med ...
10. The names you refer to are code-names. The official name for this release is "Ubuntu 8.10", and is only referred to, mostly by the technorati, by code-name un-officially. Vista's codename was/is Longhorn, but most people don't know or care about that. By the way, anyone who replaces "c"s with "k"s are dumbasses in my book.
11. Of course it could be; Does Microsoft own speech recognition? No, they don't. And once again, there are plans for it. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SpeechRecognition After all, it's not like Vista's speech recognition serves much of a use aside from showing off, when it does work that is. - daveisfera, on 10/04/2008, -0/+13If it finally makes my wireless work, then I'm happy.
- zekolas, on 10/04/2008, -3/+16Well no one forces you to upgrade, they do support all releases for 18 months. If you want to why not just upgrade once a year and let the rest of us who like to upgrade every 6 months do so?
Or get one of the LTS releases and upgrade once every 5 years. - DarthShaun, on 10/04/2008, -0/+13Ummm, releasing something under Open Source and then using that as an excuse for it being of a poor quality really is a bit lame.
Especially when Ubuntu are trying to market this thing and attract new users, the attitude of "If you think it sucks, do it yourself." would just piss people off. - Clbull, on 10/04/2008, -3/+16You can change it you know... its not like you're gonna be stuck with a diarrhea background, because Ubuntu is very customiseable
- bpoteat, on 10/04/2008, -0/+12Not freaking out with multiple (wired & wireless) connections is huge.
The proprietary hardware driver setup (specifically for nVidia) is huge. - Sabretou, on 10/04/2008, -1/+13Abacus>DOS
- midtown, on 10/04/2008, -1/+13100% less, in fact.
- amoore2600, on 10/04/2008, -4/+15Wow, Im starting to wonder if Ubuntu has lost its way with building a release that stands out. Will we ever get a good looking desktop and what ever hapen to slickboot. Im not trying to be a hater but this just seems like ubuntu is becoming very vannila.
- DarthShaun, on 10/04/2008, -1/+10The turd-brown theme isn't doing them any favours on attracting new Ubuntu users though, I bid them good luck in converting Windows users with that default theme.
Many of them might not know that they can change it, also if it's so easy to change, why can't the guys in charge do something about it? - kidcodea, on 10/04/2008, -4/+13*****-up human
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -6/+15These 6 month releases are getting lame because each iteration requires another install, usually breaks some things that worked in the last version (my broadcom didn't work in hardy but it did in gutsy). Canonical needs to switch to yearly updates, and not market them as an entirely new OS version (ie windows 2000, windows xp). It should be more of an Ubuntu upgrade, since you can update from your current version. This will attract more people who then won't be misled into thinking they're OS is going to be outdated in 6 months
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8Looks like a killer feature, I wonder why it took so long for Gnome to get in? Don't think I'll upgrade though, latest LTS is working solid as a rock and I have a good workflow for my audio tools.
- raydeen, on 10/04/2008, -3/+11And we all know that how good an operating system GUI looks is FAR more important than how well it performs.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8While I have no problem with the default theme myself, in terms of the colour scheme, most others do not. Canonical needs to make Ubuntu appear more like something people want to see and use, not something only a minority does if it wants to go anywhere.
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8A fair point, Matt.
Personally, my biggest worry is that what most people will end up wanting is something white (or "silver") or the usual cliched blue or green tones.
While it's good in the sense that this will be adequate to the majority of tastes, it completely strips Ubuntu Linux of a unique visual identity. It'll be difficult to differentiate it from any other boring, straight-off-the-assembly-line operating system.
At the moment, someone can look at a fresh Ubuntu Linux install and, whether they like it or not, easily recognise it. This wouldn't be the case if Ubuntu winds up looking like yet another MacOS or Vista ripoff. - DarthShaun, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8"Don't know what people are complaining about."
The theme, they're complaining about the theme! - inactive, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8I often have really annoying relatives popping round for a visit and asking to use my desktop to play games, go on the web, try to be cute and delete all my *****, etc. Thanks to guest log-in, I no longer have to grow a spine and tell them no.
Man, if they found some of the stuff I have on my hard-drive... - user7, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8I love how so many people confuse gnome with ubuntu. A lot of these features are gnome features and not necessarily ubuntu.
- MicrosoftBob, on 10/04/2008, -1/+8Will "Dust" make it to LTS?
Also, list of new features since 8.04: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta#New%20 ... - bagboyrebel, on 10/04/2008, -0/+7They're code names, get over it.
- thefinger, on 10/04/2008, -2/+9because when they try to please one set of bitches, they get the wrath of another... and the first set of bitches STILL aren't happy anyway. Change the ***** theme if you don't like the default.
- molochi, on 10/04/2008, -2/+9This is the wrong hospital. You need to take your whaaambulance over to Intel General.
- mcrules, on 10/04/2008, -1/+8Actually I am pleased there are a lot of whiners. It means people are *using* the OS, and it may drive development and improvement. I use Ubuntu exclusively, and I do believe its 'getting there'. If there were no users, no one would complain, and development could cease. We all hate the human theme, but we change it, to any number of different themes, or desktops come to that. What about the XP fisher price look? You have that, classic or windowblinds. We have Gnome, KDE or any number of alternatives, AND we can theme them. In short I believe a piece of softwares popularity can be measured by the amount of dissatisfaction with it!
- andycr512, on 10/04/2008, -0/+7It releases every 6 months, so you can't expect massive changes between releases.
- DarthShaun, on 10/04/2008, -0/+7Dropshadow abuse!
- HonoredMule, on 10/04/2008, -0/+7Gnome only finally caved on tabbed nautilus because Ubuntu Brainstorms raised a huge ruckus for it. I'm currently learning the Gnome toolchain just so that I can implement for myself an idea that I KNOW will never see the light of day.
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/13863/ - srg13, on 10/04/2008, -0/+6I think that you have to be logged in to switch to the guest account - so it doesn't compromise your security.
Even if I'm mistaken, they still can't see any of your files, and the account doesn't have the privileges to change any files, so it's not a big problem... - andycr512, on 10/04/2008, -1/+7I'm using the proposed Dust theme on 8.10, and it's indeed far, far better.
- thedragon4453, on 10/04/2008, -0/+6Exactly. It looks terrible, and is probably one of the reasons why a mainstream person won't like it. As it is, the first thing I do on a new install is change the theme.
- nicko68, on 10/04/2008, -0/+6Ok, thanks.
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -3/+8First time on the front page. Thanks !
- computershack, on 10/04/2008, -1/+6Have they fixed the windows network share browsing in Nautilus so it actually works the way it did in 7.10 before they broke it in 8.04?
