- nomadofthehills, on 03/05/2009, -14/+218Well no *****, who the ***** uses IE 6 when 7 is available?
Either way, I'll take Mozilla or Chrome. - AsSubtleAsABrik, on 03/05/2009, -18/+118Okay, we're manipulating statistics a little too much now just to make firefox seem more popular. Not that there's anything wrong with firefox, it's all I use.
- VigRoco, on 03/05/2009, -17/+98Only write an article when it surpasses IE7, this is pointless.
(in case you did not know, FireFox also has more users than IE5 and Netscape combined) - Sammi84, on 03/05/2009, -1/+77IE6 was originally released in August 2001. I'm serious, it's true, look it up O_o
When will this dinosaur die?!? - jjustin01, on 03/05/2009, -0/+76Die IE6, you ***** basstard, die!
- mbraynard, on 03/05/2009, -9/+84Kind of a silly distinction.
Yesterday I thought of it as the #2 browser.
Today's news is that is is the #2 browser.
Yawn. - Stomper622, on 03/05/2009, -5/+73This is like saying Ubuntu has taken over Windows ME.
- DCTBSBN, on 03/05/2009, -1/+54Firefox is #1 in Antarctica right now!
- silver26, on 03/05/2009, -0/+53Regardless of versions, IE still has a big lead with aprox 62% vs 25%... but this is still good news.
- Jonjonr6, on 03/05/2009, -3/+48People who are still running Windows 98 are only able to upgrade to Opera.
Unfortunately, there are alot of people out there who still have their Win9x computers.
Lets also not forget companies that are extremely slow to adopt newer browsers.
My company is still standardized (so to speak) on IE6, unfortunately. - irriadin, on 03/05/2009, -1/+41If you were a web developer, you'd know that this is a big deal. IE6 is horrendous to deal with, and the sooner we can stop supporting it, the better.
- cephelo, on 03/05/2009, -6/+43Lots of us hate Safari because of the obnoxious software Apple puts out, eg, iTunes, QuickTime, and Safari. The fact they are all linked and have, at one time or another, tried to auto-install is ridiculous at best.
(They each have their special brand of suck, at least on non-Mac platforms. iTunes, for instance, likes to install useless services and insists on running services just in case I plug my ipod in.. despite Windows having plenty of hooks for programs to respond to new hardware.) - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -3/+39The only reason why IE is the #1 browser is because it comes with most computers and autoupdates. Plus, most people have no idea wtf a "FireFox" is, unfortunately. Thankfully, this is gradually changing.
- VigRoco, on 03/05/2009, -2/+37It already boasts more features out of the box than IE 7 has with all of the microsoft add ons installed.
FireFox also understands that they do not want to push features on you that you may not want or need, which is why they have the add on system. You get only what you absolutely need out of the box, then you can customize it to how you see fit. - klaengur, on 03/05/2009, -0/+32but, take a look at the Europe data
http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-eu-dail ...
IE7 35.84,
Firefox 35.93
Firefox wins - surferjoemaui, on 03/05/2009, -0/+29Mobile safari is my "#2" browser because I use it in the john!
- 1n4007, on 03/05/2009, -0/+27bass tard? You mean those Techno dudes in their tuned cars?
- irriadin, on 03/05/2009, -9/+34Not really. IE6 and IE7 are significantly different from each other. Much more than Firefox 2 vs Firefox 3.
- black27696, on 03/05/2009, -4/+28As a web dev that's great, but bear in mind IE 6 itself is deprecated, and many people are switching or already have to IE 7 so that's probably the reason it's skewed. I don't want to take away from Firefox's success but if you want to measure it accurately you have to compare it to all users of IE 1- 7. Otherwise you'd have to only compare people using the version of firefox that was available during IE 6's run.
- SniperZero, on 03/05/2009, -1/+25I wish IE6 would drop to 0% would make my life so much easier. Would be nice if IE was dropped all together but at least 7+ works a million times better then IE6 (at least at displaying pages)
- Bdog2g2, on 03/05/2009, -2/+26Not unless you have a client that cares that much. I've stopped fixing for IE if I don't have to.
- Baryn, on 03/05/2009, -1/+24Why don't you at least use IE7?
- Sammi84, on 03/05/2009, -4/+26I don't know if I'd call it manipulation. Even though IE6 is deprecated, it is still almost the de-facto standard for webdevelopment, and has been for ages. Which is sad I know, but it's good news to hear that Firefox now has a larger user base. So the comparison is warranted in my opinion.
- KnightMareInc, on 03/05/2009, -5/+27so 20% still use ie6? ie7 is so much better.
- zantos420, on 03/05/2009, -0/+21oontz oontz oontz
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -1/+22If Firefox came with every addon built in, it would be classified as bloatware. Would you want to willingly download a browser that's hundreds of megabytes, that would require unnecessarily large amounts of system resources - while having to modify it to sort through and disable all of the "features" it came with?
- irriadin, on 03/05/2009, -0/+20Obvious troll is obvious.
- HonoredMule, on 03/05/2009, -1/+19"cool things" + "java wise" = contradiction on top of oxymoron.
If you're a web developer, what the ***** are you doing with trashy Java anyway? It failed on the web for a damn good reason: it sucks the soupy turds. Use proper web standards and your "frustrations" will evaporate. - CySailor, on 03/05/2009, -6/+24Firefox 2.0 went down as Firefox 3.0 went up.
IE6 went down as IE7 went up.
I imagine some users went to Firefox from IE yes, but take a close look at the graph and remember there are 3 kinds of lies (I think Linolcn said that)
1. Lies
2. Damn Lies
3. Statistics - BenevolentD, on 03/05/2009, -9/+27I've tried the new IE8 Beta and trust me when I say if it doesn't improve vastly before it's release firefox's popularity will grow by leaps and bounds. Which is probably a good thing...
- StreetPreacher, on 03/05/2009, -1/+18Large institutions like the US government, mostly. They take forever to upgrade, and take a lot of time to do extensive security and compatability testing. A very large portion of the federal government is still on IE 6.
- Devine122, on 03/05/2009, -0/+17I wish IE6 would go away faster.
- arbulus, on 03/05/2009, -0/+16@falafelkiosken
I agree. I don't go out of my way to make sure my sites render the same in older browsers. People should know enough by now to know that keeping old browsers around is a security risk. If people are still using IE 5, I simply don't care. I'm not writing a site for them. I also wouldn't check for FF2, Safari 1, or IE 6. I check my sites against all current generation browsers, but that's it. I don't go backward unless there is a very specific reason to do so, (i.e. my client has requested it). - 4321234, on 03/05/2009, -0/+16Does your site sell adult diapers?
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+16I think it's because Opera used to actually cost money. By the time they lifted the price tag on their Windows version, people weren't really interested.
- zantos420, on 03/05/2009, -0/+15i could set my watch to each time windowsME would crash.
what a joke of an OS. - freshivore, on 03/05/2009, -0/+15Exactly, the percent that when you ask them "Now open up your browser..." and the response is "Browser???"
Unfortunately corporate setups and people who think the internet is the little blue "e" on their desktop are the remaining stragglers. - falafelkiosken, on 03/05/2009, -1/+16why does a lot of people (users) expect that new web sites will work with obsolete browsers, to me that's absurd. everyone talks about how we must make a site available for all groups but I could care less about people who can't get their arses over to mozilla.com, or order a cd if their internet connection is to slow.
- eatsushi, on 03/05/2009, -1/+16you're a ***** moron.
love,
web developer - Chompy, on 03/05/2009, -1/+16You got dugg down because your reasoning was flawed, not because people are "FF fanboys".
- Baryn, on 03/05/2009, -3/+18Should we really care about dolts who are haven't updated their PC in 10 years? They aren't clients. Do they have enough money to give *us* any?
- markusfarkus, on 03/05/2009, -0/+14I never understood why Opera never caught on. For years it was the best browser. It still is great. But then Firefox came along and got all the glory. How did that happen?
- matriculated, on 03/05/2009, -0/+14I can haaz 32bit PNGs now?
- counterplex, on 03/05/2009, -2/+16Proxy server? Shouldn't you be able to implement a transparent proxy where all outbound port 80 and 443 traffic goes through the proxy? Yes you'll lose all other ports but those are just the outliers.
- cookingboy, on 03/05/2009, -0/+13They do security test? Then HOW THE ***** did IE6 pass that?
- irriadin, on 03/05/2009, -1/+14Everyone who is saying this isn't a big deal doesn't know what an immense pain in the ass it is to deal with IE6 on a daily basis. IE6's flagrant lack of web compliance has been holding the web back for years. Not to mention earning the ire of web developers for nearly a decade.
So, good riddance to IE6! Hopefully the market share will drop precipitously in the next year so we can dump support for this dinosaur. - dalittle, on 03/05/2009, -2/+15Man, that is fantastic. Now web developers are more likely to build their site to the web standard and not what ever wacko glitch mess that microsoft came up with. As Firefox has climbed in market share, my web surfing has noticeably improved.
- gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -1/+14agreed... you must be a pretty n00bish web developer
- DivineMonkey, on 03/05/2009, -4/+17I always get people to switch to Firefox in my job. All the dumbasses i talk to use IE thinking it 'is the internet', just like those people who switch from AOL and say "where's my buddy list??". So i nicely call them a dumbass and tell them to download Firefox cause it's more secure and it rocks.
