- Bicep, on 05/21/2008, -36/+202Linux matters Dammit!! Fix this!!
- gritta, on 05/21/2008, -3/+83Release CANDIDATE has bug in it, SHOCK HORROR. Buried as blogspam, don't make assumptions about what Mozilla is going to do.
Mozilla has no reason to release bad software and will take the course of action that results in the best experience for the most amount of users. - martalli, on 05/21/2008, -7/+83The distros will find a fix for this and likely not migrate up to a buggy version until it is fixed. The nice thing about open source is that who ever fixes the bug can send the fix back to Mozilla and it can also be picked up by the other distros. That means whether Arch or Mandriva finds a fix, all can enjoy it. It also means that different hackers in different distros could even work together. I would be the businesspeople would have to negotiate for a month before programmers at competing proprietary companies could pick up the phone and chat.
- mariuz, on 05/21/2008, -3/+64I think is time to replace sqlite with firebird as db backend for firefox/thunderbird , here is the main issue
"The problem noted in this bug is a problem in SQLite, not in firefox. They
should be using the O_SYNC argument to open, instead of flushing the whole disk
all the time." - BigManOnCampus, on 05/21/2008, -12/+70I haven't experienced any problems with the beta version that came with ubuntu 8.10. Is this real?
- wertz9080, on 05/21/2008, -5/+62Direct Steve Ballmer quote:
"BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!" - daveisfera, on 05/21/2008, -2/+30Has some reported this to the SQLite developers so they can look into fixing it?
- sloppychris, on 05/21/2008, -9/+34Blogspam.
- Dunnix, on 05/21/2008, -4/+27Yeah, this bug is what is cause firefox 3 to completely halt for 30-45 seconds on me eee... =(
- sancho, on 05/22/2008, -6/+29I think that they do.
Ubuntu 8.04 is a long term release. They plan to maintain this release for years, and they don't want to get stuck on Firefox 2 when Firefox 3 is right around the corner. At the same time, they try to adhere to a strict 6 month release schedule. Their options were:
1) Ship with a very nearly obsolete browser.
2) Ship late.
3) Ship with a beta browser
None of the three options is particularly good, but shipping with a beta version (and the option to downgrade if you want to) is a pretty decent compromise. - KibibyteBrain, on 05/22/2008, -3/+25Well, Ubuntu 8.04 is already shipping with FF3, so unfortunately not all distros are following your wisdom.
- ePuck, on 05/22/2008, -5/+27Amen. Firefox should be opensource
- atozand1to10, on 05/22/2008, -0/+18There is no Ubuntu 8.10 yet dammit.
- phinn, on 05/22/2008, -0/+18It's Ubuntu 8.04 and Firefox 3.0 Beta 5, unless you have a time machine and went to October.
- mfratt, on 05/22/2008, -4/+21I'm running Beta 5 on Linux with no problems...
- SmileyChris, on 05/22/2008, -2/+15/me throws an egg
- bjornski, on 05/22/2008, -3/+16Whose fault is that?
Incomplete software (last updated version I got was RC1. NOT a finished product.
Sounds like rushing to add it to the distro isn't FF's fault. - inactive, on 05/22/2008, -8/+21INSTALL LINUX
PROBLEM SOLVEDohwait - badassninja, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12You have to be joking me. Version 3 uses the lest amount of ram out of all browsers and over all laughs at IE for a living. I have to be talking to Bill gates for Steve, because no one else in the world could be that dumb.
- toshibu, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12It's not a "problem." The original goal of using SQLite was to allow the database to be resistant to crashes. Obviously a bug has popped up and they're going to have to find a workaround...
- superjamie, on 05/22/2008, -0/+11Read the Bugzilla page, Ubuntu are applying a patch to fix this in THEIR Firefox 3 RC1 package.
Hopefully other distros will follow suit.
The overarching problem is with SQLite, not with Firefox. If one uses MySQL as a backend, the problem goes away. - troydoogle7, on 05/22/2008, -2/+13The Firefox beta is just as stable as ie7 and more stable than FF2 so i think they made a good call.
This bug will be fixed soon, and I bet it will be sorted for release - G001, on 05/22/2008, -0/+11It's just a matter of setting an option in SQLite. They could already turn this behavior off completely if they wanted to.
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -9/+20Buried as inaccurate.
- sancho, on 05/22/2008, -1/+12The great thing about open source is that Mozilla could fix this themselves.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 05/21/2008, -2/+13FireFox3b5 included in Fedora 9 is running for me without issue. In fact, it runs circles around FF2.
I think this is may be a none issue. - PAStheLoD, on 05/22/2008, -2/+12I assume they could, but they just can't fix everyone else's bugs.
- str1fe, on 05/21/2008, -1/+11Every program ever has bugs, FF's intentional features all have a purpose, and Linux will never die. Ever. Whether it becomes widely accepted into the mainstream is another story, at least to the extent of Windows or Mac.
- domness, on 05/21/2008, -7/+17If you read all the comments and tests on the site, you can see that most of them use Beta's 2-5 with this Bug. However, despite this is updated news to the day, nothing with a bug on RC1 is there.
Also, you can't really use 'Firefox 3' as the title for this 'bug' because FF3 hasn't been released fully yet. We are still only on Release Candidate 1. - jayzer, on 05/21/2008, -3/+13It's October now?
- vincew, on 05/21/2008, -1/+11According to the bug report it's reproduced in:
Firefox 3.0b4, nightly, 2008305
Firefox 3.0b5pre, the lastest nightly, 20080306.
Firefox 3.0b3
8.10 shipped with 3.0b5 so you may not see this (though it appears this bug is still open). FWIW, I'm using 3.0b5 on Debian Sid and it's fine. - Raphae1, on 05/22/2008, -0/+10http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Download_Mozi ...
- montezumamike, on 05/21/2008, -0/+9Dang, so this is what has been going on. I've had to resort to Konqueror for some pages. I really hope they fix this.
- G001, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10It's going to be in RC2 if they make one, 3.0.1 if not. The gripe is that it's not going to be in 3.0 if there's no RC2.
- init100, on 05/22/2008, -3/+12"80% of the market must be on to SOMETHING."
If popularity would be a good indicator of quality, McDonalds would be the world's best restaurant. - crazyjake, on 05/21/2008, -1/+10most are...
- str1fe, on 05/21/2008, -1/+9Just the fact that they're openly developing a solid browser for Linux is great.
- JosefH, on 05/21/2008, -4/+12This is why you always check for STDs before using new software
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -1/+9Oh boo ***** hoo. It's not release quality software. They'll fix it, like they do with every other damn bug. Just give it some time. For now, If you need another browser, use another damn browser. Plenty of good choices.
- Dumbledorito, on 05/21/2008, -1/+9Normally, I'd agree, but the link he has on his LJ is a bit technical and you don't get to the gist of it without scrolling down.
He could have summarized and elaborated a bit, though. - noelsusman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8If you actually read the article itself, you will see that the blog spammer does not cite any sources to back up his claim.
- afx1, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8dare you to submit that as the solution on bugzilla
- bjornski, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8Go get it.
Don't just talk a big game. Show those bastards how it's done! - TeamBaldwin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7While I agree, there is also the issue that all the sql transactions are in the main UI thread which causes the interface to lock up while waiting on said fsync() calls.
- sparcnut, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7Dumb apps and app bugs like this are the reason my laptop has a kernel with fsync/fdatasync disabled. Yeah, yeah, grumble grumble data safety grumble. Works fine for me, and I have had plenty of system crashes with no corruption issues. I have backups anyway.
- steveiskfc, on 05/21/2008, -0/+7This has been an issue for several months.
- phinn, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7This has to be the dumbest comment I've ever read on Digg.
- comrade693, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6and if you actually read the bug, you'd be even more informed!
