- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've found that by extracting the xpi file and changing the maxVersion value in install.rdf, most older extensions will work in FF 1.5.
- drwh0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It pretty much goes without saying that a major version release will break some old extensions. If it didn't there would be no forward progress.
Give it time, people will update their extensions. I waited a few days for adblock, gestures, weather and sage to be updated. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@grendel
Both DTa and image zoom have been updated to work with 1.5

http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/web/firefox/buildid/nightly.html - grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a pain in the ass... i am sitting here with 1.07 cause my image zoom downloadthemall extentions do not work with 1.5
- kbunsie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are people continuing to post these "Firefox 1.5 breaks extensions" stories. I have been using 1.5 and I have over 30 extensions running all of which are compatible updates. People need to stop complaining and do some fact finding.
- reverb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, duh?
- jfritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no one cares, this digg sucks. we all know whenever a new firefox comes out, there will be extension incompatibilities. seriously.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@bort stumbleupon works fine for me just manually look for the update.
- MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are people surprised that an upgrade caused problems with third-party extensions? This happens every upgrade, yet every upgrade it seems like people are blindsided by it, and suddenly have no patience to 1. find a solution for themselves, or 2. wait for the extension developer to update.
- bort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only extension that is not compatable right now for me is stumbleupon.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ive only had 1 extension not work for the first few days now everything is fine.
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nightly Tester Tools is also available on https://addons.mozilla.org
- FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All of the extensions that I use just required the max version to be updated.
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is an unfortunate side effect, but I'm going to be patient becuase it is still a better alternative to everything and that's worth updating extensions for, right?
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@worlah i use download manager tweak with 1.5 it works fine.
- baroing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meh...
i had to do a bit of reading to get everything working...nothing an inquisitive mind and google can't solve.... - Polly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Almost every extension I use is somehow borked in 1.5 so I'm yet to officially upgrade from 1.0.7.
- wolrah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do wish that it would check compatibility and tell which ones would not work out of the box before installation though.
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate these stories. Stop complaining. By the time 1.5 official came out, all 15 extensions I use were all compatible with 1.5, I've had zero problems. Stop your bitching.
- Cheeze_Head, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yawn, 1.0.7 kicks 1.5 ass
- aacidusX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea, whats all the crying about...
nightly tester tools. - theRed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fasterfox now makes pages load slower than they would without the extension
- midorigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It disappoints me to see these articles. EVERY major upgrade has broken extensions, it's the nature of any change or progress. Yet every time it happens, people complain for the first couple weeks until extension developers can catch up. What do they expect?
Well, it's obvious what they expect. So why don't we give it to them? I think there should be some kind of designated period of time immediately after after a major upgrade is released, but before extension developers have had a chance to catch up, where the upgrade is available but not publicly advertised (or now, automatically downloaded) to the would-be confused masses. That way, things can settle down and make a nicer transition for average users who don't necessarily *need* the upgrade right away. Of course, all of us antisocial types who anxiously await new releases to the point of obsession could download them manually and, being the reasonable people we are, understand that not every third party extension will work right away. Like a trade-off, one more level above running unstable beta releases. - famewolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can change whatever you want...autofill...one of the MOST useful extensions will still not work..it may "install" using the nightly tools but it won't allow you to create a profile and the autofill button won't enable even if you already have one created.
gbm85 - Ask santa for a new personality for christmas. - hochy0lora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0try uninstalling and re-installing the old version and switch the extension to default then upgrade. just a though.
- wolrah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So far I've only had one extension that was not compatible with an upgrade: Download Manager Tweak.
I really don't care, anyways, because it made me check out Download Statusbar again, and now I like that more. - Portfolioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 1.5 is great. I've been using it since Alpha 1 and nothing major has changed (except some internal bugfixes not visible in the gui)
Yes, some extensions break, but this can be corrected. The only reason they break is because the author of the extension set a maximum version for the extension to work on. If you reaname your favorite brokenextension.xpi to whatever.zip and open it up, pop open the install.rdf file in notepand an look for em:maxVersion="X" 9where X is the version it will work up to. Change that to 1.5 or whatever number above 1.5 that you like and save it, put it back in the zip file and rename the zip back to xpi. Then onpen it with firefox and it shold install.
Note: some extensions do break in firefox 1.5 because of gui changes, but if it's a little minor extension like copy plain text, then it should update. - psytek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im having a problem with flash, says its an unknown plugin.
- benf2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All of the extensions I use save one work with 1.5, but I'm still thinking about switching back to 1.0.7. Frankly 1.5 has not impressed me at all. The browser seems to be exactly the same, except now it's slower and eats memory faster.
Extensions are the least of my problems with FF 1.5. - monkeymagik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my extensions are fine and most extensions I've seen seem to have 1.5 versions... it's more the themes that seem to have a lack of updates. My favourite theme won't work which is really ***** me
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't use too mch extensions, and the ones that didn't work I don't use much either. But how I hate the skins that isn't compatible. Now I have to use some ***** skin I find on Mozilla's website. They don't always have to best skins.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every one of my 10 extension works perfectly in 1.5
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new FF so-called auto updates in the backround does not work. I have better results by doing an force manuals thru extension panel in ff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You mean software updates can break old plug-ins? no way! Lame. no digg
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just upgraded to 1.5 and all my extensions and themes download+upgraded automagically.
- dannywsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of the problems with current extensions are simply because of the version issue.
The simple fix that shakin mentions aboue, I found, worked on 99% of all the extensions I tried it on, that weren't already re-written for 1.5. I'm running 1.5, and have been running the beta since almost day one, with ALL of my extensions working. I see no grounds for the accusations presented in this link. No Digg! - n4cr2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The middle mouse functionality is also too aggressive. It overrides my global mouse settings in the control panel. If anyone knows how to have firefox 1.5 ignore middle mouse clicks, lemme know.
- AbeFrohman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They better fix this soon! I need my extensions!
- fyrfyter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At bare minimum you guys could get smart enough to edit and fix the extensions yourselves. Try using Filzip and look for the info through Google. It's only a matter of changing the file so that it doesn't stop working with 1.0.x and change it to 1.5+
- ColdChilli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But I want backward compatibility!!!! WAAAh! the XBox 360 wont play my Xbox Games! I want my 1995 windows 3.1 app to work on Windows Vista!
Really I want a 1.5 product to support 1.0 extensions. Otherwise it should have been a 2.0 product.
Greasemonkey still doesn't work 100% of the time, closer to 40% - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nightly tester or http://www.mrtech.com/ Mr Tech's Local Install. OR hell, DO IT YOURSELF, you lazy bastards. Jesus, it's not that hard to update your extensions. Quit crying, do some install.rdf editing, and quit disgracing Digg.com. Honestly, we know you're not that retarded.
- Rirath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get nightly tester tools and solve all your problems.
End of thread. - fperkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg, flamebait.
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well said kbunsie
- Friedbeef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, I have a lot of extensions 100% & of my extensions now work in 1.5. One or 2 of them I went to the authors site to update it, as the mozilla site did not have all the updated versions just yet... but 1.5 is good.
- ddfrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of this blog's readers have upgraded Firefox numerous times. However, most Firefox users have little experience with upgrades. A significant percentage of users do not know that their extensions might not work with the new version.
If a warning was issued as part of the upgrade process, there would be no justification for complaints about the unexpected loss of functionality. - skealoha86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kevin rose dugg this. perhaps there will be a digg extension for firefox?
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Switch Proxy, Minimal Orange and Black themes :(
- Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm on 1.6a1(Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20051208 Firefox/1.6a1 ID:2005120805)
And ALL my extencions work.
