- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5works great here :)
- ViceVirtue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They've been in beta for a while, anyone with a decent Linux distribution wouldn't need to go to much trouble to install them (unmask and emerge on Gentoo, simple)
It is great news, though. - sukimashita, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3... and to make it work and understandable for everyone else, you have one of these options when using the driver with the need for desktop effects:
1. NVIDIA Driver + Xorg
2. NVIDIA Driver + Xgl
3. NVIDIA Driver + Xorg + AIGLX
Mind that the topic is misleading and you do NOT require AIGLX to use desktop effects with this new driver! - kingp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1downloaded it yesterday and it works great. The flash screen for NVIDIA is different as well. The Beta driver worked great with the desktop effects, I just hated the Window decorations that it used, so I went back to my Crystal look for FC 6.
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If you don't have XGL or AIGLX, Compiz can't do anything.
- LordofShadows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Title screwed things up, all you need is xorg 7.1 + nvidia driver for compiz/beryl
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@aninhumer
No you are wrong you don't need xgl or aiglx to run compiz. The new xorg with the new nvidia drivers wouldn't need either as xorg implements it. Why do people comment when they don't know what they are talking about. My computer has been running the beta nvidia drivers on edgy for a while now with no aiglx or xgl. - debian_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Jacob: you're both right and wrong. Someone who has nvidia drivers and compiz on the new xorg doesn't need to explicitly install Xgl or AIGLX because the AIGLX code has been integrated into the Xorg 7.1 codebase.
- ViceVirtue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They've been in beta for a while, anyone with a decent Linux distribution wouldn't need to go to much trouble to install them (unmask and emerge on Gentoo, simple)
- nipuL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Cool, bsd drivers available aswell. If only they'd play nicely and give us the amd64 drivers
- exsst, on 10/12/2007, -8/+45Ahhh, what could be a better news day..

- rpdillon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17For those to whom this was not obvious:
This is big. With the recent release of (k)Ubuntu Edgy Eft, running a 3D accelerated desktop under Linux works almost "out of the box". Now that nVidia is sporting drivers that support Beryl/Emerald, most users of Edgy can run in full accelerated mode without hacks. This puts the graphics easily on par with what people are used to seeing in demos/betas of Vista as well as the effects that have been in OS X for years.
Oh, and for the record, the nVidia drivers don't support AIGLX. AIGLX is another implementation of the same API that the nVidia drivers now support. So, if you're setting up your Linux box with this stuff and you're using the new nVidia drivers, turn AIGLX *off*, since it won't be used on your machine.- exsst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Indeed.. I've seen beryl and AIGLX together and they look sweet.. Here's some screenshots:
http://www.beryl-project.org/themes.php - shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...as is the case with any distro. (I'm talking about the out-of-the-box-working-ness). But yes, nvidia drivers + beryl = all you need. :)
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got started with Edgy the other day, and I'm *this* close to getting XGL/Compiz working -- but I keep getting this "API mismatch" where it says my drivers and API aren't the same version but should be.
I know this is Digg and not an Ubuntu support forum... but is this something I can fix by adding a source in Synaptic? - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fedora beat Ubuntu to it by a few weeks... if you install this driver (or were using the beta of this version that has been out for a long long time that supported AIGLX) it's as simple as typing "desktop-effects" in a shell to bring up the config options.
(if you haven't already loaded it, you might need to 'yum install compiz')
- exsst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Indeed.. I've seen beryl and AIGLX together and they look sweet.. Here's some screenshots:
- prototypeangel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The beta drivers had AIGLX support but somehow beryl never worked well in debian. But good to see that the driver's hit out of beta, now I wait for beryl.
There was a security concern with this driver that by using some method, code could be run as root. is this taken care of?- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was the 1.8xxx series driver if I recall correctly. This is the 1.9xxx where it has already been fixed.
- visik7, on 10/12/2007, -30/+1this is defintely OLD don't digg old news!
- neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11
RTFA ... "Release Date: November 7, 2006". That's yesterday, idiot, and the same day the article was Dugg. - plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10support of GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap was already available in BETA drivers. These are STABLE ones. The news is about Nvidia releasing new STABLE drivers with GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap support.
While title is a bit inaccurate (GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap != AIGLX), this article is worth a digg.
- neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11
- mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So maybe someone can point me to a guide, or tell me what I should do now.
Is it as simple as, install this new driver, build beryl, start xorg?- mbeauchez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Install driver, start Xorg, kill normal window-manager and start beryl-manager. That's it. Works great here on a Nvidia Geforce2 MX 32 Mb.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beryl will kill your existing WM anyway, it uses the --replace option like metacity/compiz/kwin etc.
- visik7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and for reporters they doesn't introduce aiglx support but is the driver itself that provide the features that compiz/beryl/metacity/kwin needs
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have they fixed the security issues?
- dystopianray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The RenderAccell security issue was fixed with the first 9xxx series beta.
- omababy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1bout time......
- nickm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4*sigh* shame i switched to intel already...
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yay!
Now gimme the amd64 package in debian sid, please =)- Ensnared, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You'll get them, as soon as Debian decides on the new name of the driver :o)
*ducks* - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Name of the driver? I don't get it...
I've been trying to install the nvidia drivers (any version) on Debian Etch x86_64 , I tried from the stable, unstable, testing and experimental repositories... none of them could install the driver due to a missing nvidia-kernel :| I'm guessing the amd64 binary was missing in the repos. - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, I think they fixed it! Gonna omit installing this beta for now and wait till it gets on the repo (prob tomorrow? let's hope). I always prefer having it installed the repo way, the debian way.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah crap I was wrong... digg me down, it's still missing :(
Sorry for tripple posting too - subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Xilon: "Name of the driver? I don't get it..."
I guess you weren't here for the long and tedious IceWeasel "debate". - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh that... right...
- Ensnared, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You'll get them, as soon as Debian decides on the new name of the driver :o)

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_1.0-9629.html
unusually, if you go though the download driver 'wizard' on the site you get the download for old drivers? - XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5AIGLX + KDE4 + Kwin4 + Nvidia drivers > *
- nickm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i really want to try KDE4, i'v used gnome since i started using linux, but KDE4 certainly gives me compelling reason to switch, rather than the usual incremental releases.
- banana989, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Good news for Nvidia users! where are my ATI drivers ?? :(
- adam.skinner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just to second plagiats remark, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap != AIGLX.
AIGLX depends on DRI, and nVidia drivers do not support DRI, and hence do not support AIGLX that comes rolled with xorg 7.1.1 (the version of xorg in Ubuntu Edgy and other current distros).
What this new version does support is GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, which is what AIGXL provides that allows you to do Beryl / compiz. Xgl also provides this critical component.
If you need help getting your xorg.conf set up properly, please refer to the following link from a moderator at the the Beryl forums:

You can find more info at the Gentoo Xeffects wiki: http://wiki.gentoo-xeffects.org/Main_Page- daedius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you Adam. Your post put everything into perspective quite nicely. =)
- DjSandman87, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Thank god...they were slow enough getting them here!! haha That's awesome though.
- joliveira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2anyone know of somewhere that has precise information on what the facts are with regards to this release? And instructions on how or what you should be installing to get the "wow"-factor going?
from what I understand this new driver just adds full support to get something like BERYL to run w/o a hitch - and NOT AIGLX. Correct?
new driver + beryl = prettier desktop stuff
compiz, aiglx - both of those are not in the picture (for now).?- ricce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You understand it right... If you have a nVidia card you can use the nVidia drivers w/o AIGLX or XGL for a compositing 3D WM like Beryl.
Beryl is a fork from Compiz that doesn't require you to install half of Gnome, but otherways is pretty much the same...
If you don't have a nVidia card you still need AIGLX to get it work... the new nVidia drivers provides what AIGLX provides for other hardware.
I suggest you read the Beryl wiki for installation instructions on different distributions:

- daedius, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Screw Gnome, Screw KDE.. I wants my Beryl Desktop Environment! =) Eye-candy down to the very last icon ~ Cheers for Beryl! Cheers for The Revolution! Thankyou NVIDIA!
- Poromenos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Gnome and KDE are desktop environments, beryl is a window manager. So, you, uh, can't run beryl without Gnome or KDE (or another desktop environment).
- lyzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Errr emerald is a window manager
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Indeed, beryl is the compositing manager :P
But the OP said he wanted a Beryl DE, not that he wanted to run beryl without Gnome/KDE... and besides he could have used XFCE ;) - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Gnome and KDE are desktop environments, beryl is a window manager. So, you, uh, can't run beryl without Gnome or KDE (or another desktop environment)."
Erm, I don't mean to be pernickety, but since when is a DE a necessity?
DEs like Gnome and KDE are a nice convenience feature, but you can still just run your apps on top of your wm.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Take that, ATI! NVIDIA FTW!
- ketan9, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0The beta drivers didn't work for me about 2 weeks ago. Let me check it out today to see if it works or not.

- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't think so... Xorg 7.1.1 is required afaik...
- ICEMAN23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I need help with my Suse 10.1. I can not go to the graphic desktop. It goes directly to the other one with the black screen and the whit letters.
