- unloud, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21With the focus on simplicity so much these days, I predict web 3.0 will strikingly resemble web 0.1.
- tyler9xp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Except that Web 3.0 has bigger tubes.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18WTF? A non-ubuntu linux story on the front page??
- Pingspike, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Wow, thats certainly.. err... minimal.
Is it me or does it seem they pretty much took all the information away and replaced it with a functional download page. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Less is more. See the Debian Web site.
- jonrobenator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@dragonlor20 check Fedora 7. There's single cd live cd spins that will install a functional Fedora system for you :D This includes both an official KDE and GNOME spin, plus because of the cooool live cd tools it's really easy for anybody to do a new spin with any mix of software they like.
And also, Yum/RPM has been hugely speeded up and I now find it comparable to apt/deb, maybe even faster... - KageSenshi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@HerrEisenheim
Its because both of them uses the same upstream Desktop environment .. GNOME - lnxaddct, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7No, because open source is evolutionary. Also, if you follow the fedora and red hat developers, then you are aware of exactly how much code they write for the community and are responsible for. As far as evolutionary goes, they tend to be leading the way.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8If you're going to post screenshots of your operating system, at least make them clickable so you can see a fullsize version.
http://fedoraproject.org/images/screenshot-1.jpg
http://fedoraproject.org/images/screenshot-2.jpg
http://fedoraproject.org/images/screenshot-3.jpg
These are useless.
I'm a linux n00b (not really), and I don't care about Open Source, and how I can modify the code, and where to download it. I want to see pretty pictures and some of the software that is included, I want to know how easy to use it is.
Seriously, there's no decent screenshots whatsoever on the entire site, at least not after clicking on about 8 links.
This OS is obviously exclusively aimed at geeks who know what they're doing, because the site gives no useful information to Joe Public.
In contrast to Wikipedia: "Fedora is intended to replace the consumer distributions of Red Hat Linux aimed towards home users."
Compare this site to the Ubuntu homepage: http://www.ubuntu.com Which one do you think will inspire more home users to download and try it out?
Even compare it to the Windows Vista homepage: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/default.mspx
OK, no screenshots there, just some typical MS photos of people smiling. But there's a clear and prominent link to "See Windows Vista".
What about Mac OS X: http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/ Lots of impressive screenshots to convince people to use their product.
Disclaimer: I love Linux, I don't have Windows Vista, I've used OS X but I'm not a fanboy. - Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5looks like just the home page pretty much which has changed. The fedora wiki still has the same look and feel.
I've been using fedora 6 since the day it came out and I'm really excited about fedora 7 next week :-) - rodgy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm not thrilled. There's no contact information. When you click the thumbnails, nothing happens. There's no "About" page. Before clicking "Join Fedora" you're not sure what to expect from this commonplace title. Same for "Planet The voices of the Fedora community", you don't know if it's a series of blogs, or testimonials. There's no screencast, or at least a few screenshots. I hope they read my comments.
- iquaid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2All that old content is still there, under the Wiki link. The redesign is focused on core user desires when visiting fedoraproject.org -- to get (download) something, to learn about something, or to join something.
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's interesting to see the differences when they are all lined up together. I hate to say it but the winner, has got to be the mac site, It's beautiful and the pictures and clear. It's obvious what your getting and I'm not even a mac fan.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4is it just me or are those images just really pixelated and ugly?
- LegendOfLink, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Hmm...they are taking the getfirefox.com approach. Excellent. It worked very well for Mozilla, and this will work nice for them.
Go Fedora! (as you can tell, they are my fav distro) - nihed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3to sdpdt
the design of fedora 7 is the best you can found in open source world - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Exactly, I don't even have a Mac, but seeing those screenshots makes me want OS X. I'm sure Fedora is a fantastic operating system, but the site doesn't make me immediately want to rush out and get a copy.
- ungamedplayer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hey kagesenshi,
From what I can see, Fedora does not plan to become an upstream distro (like the *buntus, if that is what you mean), however this new direction they are taking allows you to spin your own version very easily and probably offer a bunch of the popular choices, a win-win for everyone.
This should allow the power users to download exactly what they need, getting their new versions of Fedora faster, and not having to download or install the parts they don't want.
This release has also had more community input then ever before, and there is more to come. Some of the core packages have been opened up to non internal packagers of Red Hat to maintain and contribute to.
I'm currently running rawhide, and am -very- happy with the stability and sanity of this system running on my macbook. - Konstantino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What's wrong with minimal? I think it's pretty sexy (and to the point).
- Vitaliy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Fedora was started when Red Had Linux was discontinued in favor of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, that is quite an awesome and stable base. I believe both Red Hat and Debian were started back in 1993, with obviously push toward the enterprise on the Red Hat side. Not putting down Debian or anything, I just do not think that Fedora should be discredited as an unstable new distro.
- KageSenshi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@ungamedplayer
to me , its more like debian rather than *buntu .. let some other guy spin/manage a distro based on fedora that'll challenge *buntu .. I love fedora the way it is :D
yup .. i'm also happy on rawhide :D .. usually i start using rawhide on Test2s of every release ... and so far .. nothing serious happened .. - aja0011, on 12/17/2007, -0/+0ttp://www.gov-auctions.org

Free Website Submission - http://www.parsonsdomains.com - zridling, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I can only tell you that among other cool and powerful features, the graphics in Fedora 7 are far better than Vista. (And I've been running Vista since last Spring's betas.) I was running Kubuntu and switched to Fedora because everything is simpler, faster, easier. And whoa, wait till you see your applications under Fedora — they're incredible, and that's no exagerration.

elevator shoes
Turn any shoes into height increase elevator shoes. - allenu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Hmm, I guess they don't believe that Fedora was Intelligently Designed.
- KageSenshi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1imho, the old RH base do have lots of problems for becoming a good upstream distro. Package management was not easy, deriving/respin a distro from RH requires more messing around, etc .. I've used RH9 and now using Fedora (since FC3) and in each release , I see the changes are moving to an interesting direction - moving upward and become a great upstream distro ..
Fedora during FC1-FC4 to me was an unstable distro - maybe due to RH to Fedora evolution ... but FC6 , and the upcoming F7 , I can say that Fedora is now ready to start hunting for prime time .. Stability in Fedora have increased, YUM have improved a lot, derivative distro can be created easily, contributions are becoming much easier due to the merge , ease of use and speed now on the way , etc .. it has now fully reborn .. no longer RH, but fully Fedora ..
Fedora 7 is a new start for the whole FedoraProject ... a Phoenix reborn from the ashes of RH .. long live Fedora :D - weiran, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2It still needs one big download button. How is the average user going to know what BitTorrent or mirrors are?
- LiquidRain, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Is it me, or is "Evolutionary" a bad marketing word to go with? Do you want to be known as just evolutionary, when others are claiming revolutions?
- syafthegeek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I like the design. Way much cooler ;)
- dSlifer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1All I see is a black background, no images, can't even right-click the page. Hmmm, something must be wrong, or they have gone really really really minimal.
- RandaII, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0And you are a stupid sheep.
- villiaking, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I see is a black background, no images, can't even right-click the page. Hmmm, something must be wrong, or they have gone really really really minimal.
- dragonlor20, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Fedora Core has too many CDs/DVDs to download. I choose other flavors just for that reason. (And i do prefer the .deb and apt-get systems to rpms...)
- KageSenshi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0Fedora so far have been focusing in reengineering its internal/base design and fixing problems which RHL had before ... now that the internal have improved .. time to start doing the other stuff like promotion, redesign UI, usability, ease of use, etc ..
Ubuntu was based from the very stable base of Debian .. they can focus more on the user-stuff and let the debian ppl do bout the internals .. so, Ubuntu seems easier, stable, friendy, than Fedora ..
IMO, fedora is not suitable to be compared to ubuntu .. its much better to compare fedora and debian .. ubuntu is a downstream of Debian .. and the current Fedora is an upstream distro because it is not based on any other distro (RH evolves to Fedora, RHEL is based on Fedora) ... - sdpdt, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1They should be more concerned with giving their product a face lift and not their website.
- sickfreq, on 10/11/2007, -7/+0Fed-snora *yawn*
- casualgod, on 10/11/2007, -9/+0For some reason it feels Ubuntu-ish. Maybe it's just me.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/11/2007, -9/+0???
Fedora has been downhill ever since it forked from RedHat. Now with v7, they are trying to redeem themselves, but it looks and feels EXACTLY like Ubuntu. The only difference is it's blue instead of brown. At least they are working to cut down on bloat finally. Core 5 was ENORMOUS.
