- dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how some people are complaining about the look of it.
"It looks too much like Vista".
"Looks like a kindergarten student designed the icons/desktop".
You do realize you can change themes, right?
You also realize that it's still a Test version?
It's Linux, you can do whatever the hell you want to it if you want to take the time to learn it. - cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you notice there are now 1600+ packages now available in Fedora Extras!

- jafar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Whoever said yum is lame obviously haven't used it for long.
I use Yum, and trust me, I find it more configurable than Yast / Synaptic.
Flame away. - j4050n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am installing FC4 because it is the OS of choice for a particular app (Packetfence). But I am very disappointed with Yum. Might as well be RPM with a cron job. Jafar might like yum, but I like the straight-out-of -the-box, one-stop-shopping experience w/ Suse YAST2 or Debian Synaptic. I normally use Ubuntu. Ubuntu is tops (if you can manage to fix the xorg.conf and get a decent X resolution).
- usernamenumber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rani:
Check our YumEx: https://sourceforge.net/projects/yumex/
It's a veeery nice gui for Yum. - lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fedora (by far one of my favorite distros) is pretty nice. For those who would prefer apt, it is available for Fedora too, but after using yum for a while I prefer it anyway. Its a really nice distro, definitly worth at least checking out for a month or so to get a good feel for it.

I trust that you do. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sure hope they've finally fixed gnome-vfs - it didn't seem like it was quite ready for prime time in FC4.
- chmod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is that what it looks like when you install it? God I hope so. So many linux distros install and look strikingly similar to windows out of the box. Windows has a look and feel, os x has it's own, irix has its, etc. Although there are still some striking similarities I would like to see more distros (while keeping customization) install with a look that is a little more their own.
- irabinovitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fedora will be exhibiting at SCALE 4x -- http://www.socallinuxexpo.org
- veracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0metaloid: That's Clearlooks 2 for GNOME.
I personally gave up on Fedora long time ago... Just too slow and limited for my likings. - jhudson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remember this is test release software, it does still have some issues, but looks damn nice so far, it will be a very nice release in march!
- glasswalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Finally, have been waiting for weeks. Hope some little bugs have been corrected.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did they get the dell laptop modem issue fixed? couldn't find a driver for that to save my life. It's the only thing really keeping me from dumping windows on my lappy all together.
- oddstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm seeding to help out :)
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does it auto-recognize USB devices yet?
- perry753, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yay!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The point is that it is not pretty out of the box and does not really entice users to make the switch..
Fedora test versions are just like the final versions... (from my past experience with fedora core (1,2,3,4) stability is the same too) - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new clearlooks theme looks alot like the Royale msstyle. :)
Im downloading the x64 DVD, I think Fedora is one of the more polished distros. - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Did they get the dell laptop modem issue fixed?"
I haven't had any issues with my modem in my Dell laptop in FC4.
"does it auto-recognize USB devices yet?"
FC4 auto-recognized my USB digital camera, USB thumb drive, and USB mouse. - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people bother to post screen shots and other people bother to comment on them? I'm running Fedora Core 4, it looks nothing at all like those Fedora Core 5 screen shots and if I upgrade to FC5 then my FC5 will look nothing like those screen shots either. I use KDE not Gnome and I don't use the default theme. Screenshots mean very little because the look of a Linux distro is very easily customisable in to an uncountably large number of different variations.
- joebob43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just purchased a copy on DVD from BudgetLinuxCDs.com
- Aslan72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From about Core 2 on was the point when I realized just how much a dissapointment Fedora/Red Hat are.
I've moved on...bleh, who cares about Fedora. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have never liked RedHat and really don't care for Fedora. I would rather use SuSE or Mandriva if I was going to use an RPM based distro.
- cakefart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0FC is the only distro I've used that's gotten worse (as in drivers blowing up on install, X.org blowing up, etc) with every release. One can only wonder how bad this is going to be.
Congrats on making me a SuSE user, chaps! - brownb2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Am I the only Linux user to think this is not newsworthy? A new release of many distros happens monthly, let alone a test beta.
Wake me when the actual FC5 is out. - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love how everyone says fedora ripped off windows. Where did windows get it's interface from? Hmm..... Apple anyone? Where did Microsoft get the idea for a mouse, from Apple you say, what's that Apple took that from Xerox. So many young people on these boards who have no idea. So many people whom have never even used linux before 2.6 was dropped. If you want to flame try running LFS (Linux From Scratch) or Gentoo. I agree on fedora being bloated. A lot of times it's still preconfigured for a server setup instead of a client machine. Here is a link of a video that is pretty cool of how the kernel tree has grown.

http://xamox.NET - g00ch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0hmm a new fedora test release. remember kids, every time you install a rpm based distro jesus mauls a kitten.
- xtracto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Does it support external USB hard disk installing? I tried to install FC4 on an external USB hard disk but it was not possible (right out of the box) so I installed Mandriva Linux 2006 Powerpack. I am TEH happiest of users!
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Been looking for a new distro to paly around with, maybe this will be it..
. - metaloid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Is it my impression, or the window border style looks a little too Vista.. :P ?
In the other hand , hope this time with such a large development time, they won't launch another bleeding edge piece of software, with the "bleeding" part left for the user.
Fedora has been transforming the cool Red Hat 9 in slow/unstable pieces of vomit :p that's only my opinion. - Joshosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0this is off topic. But I Just got my free ipod!!!!!!!!! http://ipods.freepay.com/?r=22665415 .Its so cool.anayway go fedora.
- ZacT1984, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Fedora bites, use Debian
- rani, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0too bad fedora doesn't have synaptic. Yum is simply too lame ;-(
- h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0digg for the news... too bad it still looks like a kindergarten student designed the icons/desktop
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0no dvd :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0What do you mean dvd...there is a freakin link to the torrent OF the dvd...
- stereomission, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0how are you?
