- mohtasham, on 10/27/2008, -1/+33I hope they find a solution for audio conflicts between flash and music players. Not installed Intrepid Ibex to see if they found a solution for it, yet.
- compacho, on 10/27/2008, -0/+30I said this in another article, but I'll say it again. I recently ran a Ibex LiveCD to see if my Wacom Graphire 4 tablet was supported this time around, and FINALLY it was. Works like a charm.
As for appearence, the Ibex RC looks more appealing. Look guys, the brown isn't going away. It's called a style ok. I do agree though that it can be made to look more appealing. I personally would include green colors to give it an "earthy feel" or maybe a light blue color cause blue on brown is very classic. - weizbox, on 10/27/2008, -3/+20I wish they would give the user a more customizable install, being able to pick what packages they want/don't want right off the bat instead of loading a bunch of stuff that you'll have to go and uninstall later.. which brings up my next point.
Simply the package management system. There is no need to have one Add/Remove app, and one synaptic app. Merge them! It's annoying if your say, uninstalling Gimp from Add/Remove, and it tells you to do it from synaptic instead... it's not a very intuitive process. - MrGreenGenes, on 10/27/2008, -0/+13Aaronical Aardvark
- motang, on 10/27/2008, -0/+13So far Flash 10 has been excellent experience for me on Ibex and even on Hardy. Firefox doesn't crash anymore.
- MWeather, on 10/27/2008, -1/+14Like Longhorn from Microsoft? That sounds like a penis joke.
- Metaleks, on 10/27/2008, -1/+12What I'm looking forward to is seeing this bug (or nonbug/agressive feature depending on how you look at it) fixed:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-sup ...
This pretty much affects all operating systems, but this has been confirmed and rated as critical for the past two releases. It would be a shame if we entered a third release and there still wasn't a fix for this. For those of you unfamiliar with the bug, an aggressive power setting for laptops causes your HDD to park its head more often, in turn decreasing the life of your HDD. - Ynot82, on 10/27/2008, -1/+11"The problem is that you can't play flash videos and your music at the same time"
Sure you can

New Linux users may not know what they want and I find the extra setup in the install annoying. Ubuntu fits on a single CD and has 90% of what I need. I think sticking with sane defaults is the best.
"There is no need to have one Add/Remove app, and one synaptic app. Merge them!"
I disagree. The Add/Remove app is designed for simplicity. Synaptic is designed for power users and those who know exactly what packages they need. I personally use Add/Remove for applications and Synaptic for development packages when compiling code or doing some other advanced task. Merging them would produce something that's less usable while also being less powerful. Remember the Unix philosophy "do one thing but do it well." One is for power users, the other for beginners. - DreadKnight, on 10/27/2008, -0/+8

You know... It _could_ have some check box or tab to go in advanced / power-user mode. - ElectricKetchup, on 10/27/2008, -0/+8What's wrong with the multi-monitor support in Intrepid?

- noisymime, on 10/27/2008, -0/+7If a graphics card doesn't work under Windows, people blame the manufacturer.
If a graphics card doesn't work under linux, people blame linux.
Do you see my point? - Nephersir7, on 10/27/2008, -3/+10actually, my audio has been more reliable in linux than in vista (but maybe thats because my mobo came with audio drivers for linux)
- MWeather, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6"This would allow users to install new hardware and connect to the driver database and automatically download the newest drivers if it not part of the OS."
The repository already has all redistributable drivers not included in the kernel.
"Having a similar certification program would be nice too."
Being allowed to put your driver in the kernel in the first place involves way more vetting than Microsoft's certification process. - abbathdoom, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6You do realise telling your Mom to paste 1 line into the terminal is way easier than telling her what menus and tabs to navigate to in order to get to some setting burried in Windows.

- Icetype, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6I have two nearly identical Dell boxes with 8.04. One has the audio problem, the other doesn't. Weird.
- Guspaz, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6Compiz is already enabled by default in 8.10. What the author wants is for the Compiz config program to also be installed by default.
When you set up a new Intrepid Ibex machine, you get Compiz effects enabled, and the total sum of all Compiz controls are more or less "Off, Medium, High", with the Compiz effects on medium.
I'd like to see better integration and less bugs in it, though. I turn off compiz for three reasons:
1) It produces graphical glitches (strange ***** in title bars) with new nVidia drivers on a GeForce Go 7900gs.
2) It takes over a bunch of hotkeys with no way to change them short of installing extra software
3) It breaks vsync in video players, which is super annoying.
If they fix those three things, I'll leave Compiz enabled. - Ki77erB, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5I've been using the New Human (no renamed to Darkroom) theme, and I think it looks great. Its installed by default, you just have to turn it on.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5@The first point: Of course it's doable. Windows Vista does it...
- MWeather, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4@mdaize
You shouldn't have to use the distro's standard sound server, but you can't expect everything to work if you don't. - DreadKnight, on 10/27/2008, -2/+6Not to mention that........Tablet Pc's support out-of-the-box plain sucks.

and ensures far better support too. - clickwir, on 10/27/2008, -2/+5"Hardware rating"? Seriously? Someone just saw Vistas stupid rating number and got all moist. It's bull. Maybe a warning "Hey, we see this device but it might not work"... oh wait. They already have that.
Compiz by default? Eh, I can see why a lot of people want this. It's pretty. But honestly, I've played around with it and I do work in my pc's and I need fast and efficient. I turn off Compiz/Kwin as soon as the system is installed. I really don't need it, honestly it gets in my way.
Pulse Audio is pretty new, it's come a long way in a short amount of time. A release or two more and you'll never hear of it.
Error reporting, I would like to see the option (Like Windows has) to just report it. I don't need to login to a webpage, type up anything. Just give me the option to report it. But, I also want the option of going full up and adding comments and getting into the bug reporting. Something like a Simple and Advanced options. - JonForTheWin, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3If Adobe got it's ***** together and used gstreamer this would be a non-issue.
- horsepie, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4Well you just said they are nearly identical.. so the difference must be the audio chipset?
- Wargalas, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3A quick and easy way to get it to join a Samba PDC.
- aladrin, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Aye, I was just thinking "oh man, do you have to insult every 'php guy' everywhere with statements like that?" I sincerely hope he isn't a 'professional php guy'.

We shouldn't have to .... - horsepie, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3If he doesn't realize that php is just another C-like language, he must be doing something very very wrong with his php.
- engarak, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3I have had the same issue before, the way I resolved it was to set all sound settings to auto detect instead of specifying which driver choice I want (ALSA or OSS).
Another option I saw (but didn't work for me) was to go to the speaker in the corner and double click it. Then choose preferences and check every box for items to include in the sound setup and then close the window. Then look through the tabs and uncheck the "External Amp" option. Finally reboot the PC and that my resolve the issue.
I do agree though you would think you would get similar results from similar PCs. - motang, on 10/27/2008, -2/+5Well Vista is so much better! Thank god they changed the stupid name Vienna and kept Windows 7!
- Ki77erB, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Add/Remove is for installing basic packages. Synaptic is a much more advanced, "pick and choose" package management system. The first is there for people who are new to Ubuntu or just want to do something quick. The second is there for everyone who wants a little more control and a lot more options. Or if you really want, you can follow revslaughters advice and use the command line.
- spiffyfitz, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3It's also only the default coloring... A lot of people don't know that you can change the colors to anything you want in the Appearance panel. You can make some really nice looking interfaces just with the included software.
- zip000, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3I must be the only person that actually likes the Ubuntu default theme. I've tried lots of others, but I always go back to the default.
- Guspaz, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2I've had two major issues after installing 8.10:
1) The new broadcom "wl" driver doesn't work if you also have a broadcom wired ethernet controller. A workaround can be found here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=943058
2) Audio is still not detected properly. I've got a Dell Inspiron E1705/9400. They've got the correct drivers, except for two issues. First, Ubuntu fails to add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m27" to the alsa-base file to get the subwoofer correctly listed (by default Ubuntu just doesn't use it), and second, they don't provide any way of muting/adjusting the volume of both master and LFE at the same time, since they are strangely independent (might just be a bug in ALSA that needs fixing). My solution to this was to write my own volume-controlling scripts, but I shouldn't have to. - secrity, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Mint Linux does that for you
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2You can't change the color of the icons, that's the problem. I've been advocating for a while now that the include the same set of icons in different colors. If it wasn't for their orange look I'll stick with the default set of icons.

- computershack, on 10/27/2008, -2/+4Fix laptop power management
Fix the HDD load cycle bug
Fix Windows Network Share browsing in Nautilus.
I dont want anything else - that lot would do for me. - smotpoker, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Darkhacker is right, IMO. Ubuntu is designed for novice users who may not know what synaptic, adept or the term "package manager" (as noted in the menu) even mean. What's more, they might be overwhelmed either with the complexity of full-featured package management or the number of search results that show up sometimes.
Simple/Advanced mode could be usable but does nothing to address the ignorance-of-app-name-and-purpose issue whereas multiple apps (or at least multiple menu entries) does. If people decide to switch package managers later on, that option would be removed from the menu unless the replacement frontend mimicked that mode, which could be annoying....
Personally, I use command line mostly and sometimes synaptic or adept. I tried add/remove programs once just to test it and don't really remember how well it worked, heh. I'm not defending the current implementation because *I* like it, just saying I can see reasons why it is how it is. Modularity (which offers versatility) and simplicity for users in what is supposed to be a very user-friendly environment. - zoydberg, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Jackalope. Is that a hillbilly constellation?
- JonForTheWin, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2I've installed Ubuntu for over a dozen people now, telling them to type something in the terminal, or giving them something to copy-paste over AIM has always been a *****-load easier than telling them which tabs or menus to go through.
