- Visceral, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33Be aware that Beryl is no longer supported/is outdated. The new supported compositing program is called Compiz Fusion and it's much more stable. Don't bother with Beryl any more.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20No need to wish, why can't you run it? its really easier than you think , im trying to you from it now, running the new compiz fusion
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25Fun stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Fbk52Mk1w

- straylight51, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17I wish I had a ubuntu computer that had beryl the effects are very cool.
- adc86, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Hmm.. Who do I believe? The rabid snail, or the brain damaged one...
- thinman1189, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Damnit, I wish my graphics card wasn't a piece of *****. Oh well, see yah in a few months, my precious...
- heavyal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Compiz-Fusion here, running on a tpad with a pos ati 32meg video card (mobility 7200 series) .. windows vista wouldn't even let the thing run glass - but with compiz this machine looks sweeter than vista ever will .. I know it's just eye candy, but MS is never getting my money again after seeing how good even a low end machine should run when things are programmed right.
- BFGXTC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10For those who are saying that compiz-fusion is the new version and that beryl is outdated, I think you fail to realize that compiz-fusion is a pre-alpha...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9How bad is it? i think you can even run it on some really old cards
- weijie90, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Before you use this repo, remember that it is a svn repo, and stuff from it is unstable. I tried installing Beryl with it a few days ago, and Linux locked up whenever I used the Expo plugin. However, compiz fusion worked OK, including the Expo plugin.
Be warned. - lobofanina, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9My money is on the guy that listed a processor that is known to exist, the Pentium 4 2.4 ghz. Whereas the first Pentium 3 was released at 450mhz not 300mhz.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Those are some WAY low specs man. In fact, I think I'll call your bluff on that one. My grandparents 2.4ghz P4 has a geforce2 mx in it, and cube effects chug.
- jonnyboy27, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7runs great on my Ge Force II MX with my Pentium III 750MHz system!!!
- shrewduser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9everybody should try linux at least once...
you've got nothing to lose from checking out a live CD and a very spectacular desktop experience to gain.... (not to mention the potential savings to be made from giving windows and office the boot) - tmahmood, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7where is the packages for my 64bit Ubuntu... using beryl and I want Compiz fusion right now argh....
- whatsgoodike, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I use 64bit Ubuntu with beryl.. what are you trying to say?
- ahirreddy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@Haplo
In fact yes, there are a lot of things in compiz fusion that help improve productivity, such as scale( expose on mac ), opacify, window previews, dbus, tab application switcher, and especially the window grouping and tabbing. Grouping is great when using a multi-window ui like the gimp, and tabbing is great for file browsing. Although it could be much more effective, compiz has come along way in improving productivity.
Also this is a great repo for everything that is bleeding edge. If you want to be able to do everything in the videos, just use this repo. It is built daily from the git/svn source, and will work great( at least so far for me ). The packages are stable and are devoid of any package specific bugs( at least so far ), but they will contain any and all bugs that are present in the source. - rabidsnail, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10This stuff really doesn't need that much hardware. A friend of mine runs Beryl on his 300mhz piii with a radeon 7500. Spinning the cube uses 30% of the CPU. That's 30% of 300mhz! Your hardware should have no problem with it.
- jonnyboy27, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5if you want to install sans livecd then you need the "alternate install cd" rather than the desktop. this will install using the old, but still good, text-mode installer. berly/compiz/compiz-fusion do run with xfce (i use this combo on my similarly specced machine). let us know how you get on
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Compiz Fusion isn't stable yet, the point of the repos is that they aren't stable.
- abid786, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Probably doesnt have the required hardware.
- coldphoenix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You don't really need that great of a graphics card to run these effects.
- MeneerR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4compcomm got renamed to compiz fusion
Get it? And that is the result of compiz + beryl. They put the beryl patches for the core into the compiz core. And they collected the beryl plugins and that's the fusion part. - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Most of them don't act like the Mac OS X dock, which is a shame, because I find that actually improves my productivity. The ones I've seen usually separate launchers from running programs, and don't group the multiple instances of a program together, and clicking on an icon doesn't bring up all the windows of the app like it does in OS X. Oh well..
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3God bless tight ass geeks.
For some reason many Geeks hate buying new hardware. Because they are the ones creating alot of Linux, they put a huge effort into making sure as much as possible works on their piece of crap machine. Both OSX and Winblows get a big % of their money from people buying new machines. Its in their intrest to make you upgrade often, so they put alot less effort into keeping the code tight.
Just look at Beryl V's Vista. I would say Beryl has the better effects but runs on a fraction of the hardware needs of Aero - SVPirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Beryl is still current. Compiz Fusion is out but it's not up to speed yet. I'm looking forward to trying C.F. but at the moment it's apparently not as polished/stable as Beryl.
- danakin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ubuntu can run on most computers pretty easily, and Beryl/CompizFusion isn't TOO intensive.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You can easily run Compiz Fusion in Ubuntu using Synaptic Package Manager, I agree Beryl is kinda outdated.
- trevi55, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Really many thanks for digging my repository...
You make my work easier ;) - whatsgoodike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is true. Its hold on my RAM (beryl, (the pretty cube + effects)) never exceeds 200MB
- Hermmunster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4This repository has been up and down over the years. I've learned to not trust it. Also, the beryl version they have has a flawed version the resize plugin and a flawed version of the 3d effects. The resize bug can cause firefox to crash regularly as well as just not functioning properly. The 3d effects has a problem when a window is on the edge of 2 desktops and you rotate. The window is duplicated instead of just shown partially on each desktop. Also, the compiz version causes problems with the default repositories, indicating that compiz can't be updated without a partial update, etc. Essentially, it is like a conflict in the repositories.
- PatrickBrown, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I always found the replacement dock programs to be nice looking, but horribly unproductive. It is especially a pain when I have a few development tools open and I have to hunting around to find the correct one.
However, I have always found compiz/beryl/compiz fusion to be more than eye candy and rather helpful (at least, since compiz/beryl started to become stable). Features like the scale plugin do allow for more productivity. - Prospero424, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3All I have to say is that the whole Compiz thing just shows how fast Linux software development can move. It's amazing to have watched it over the past year or so.
- anjinash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Get *****.
- MeneerR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2About keys not working:
Certain keyboards don't actually send all keys. Instead they sent a combination of keypresses that would, in windows, do that the key was supposed to do. For example, I have this keyboard that has this log-out button. It sends these keypresses when I click it: META-UP-Enter-Home-Down-Down-Tab-Enter. No kidding!
There is nothing you can do about those keys. For the other types of keys, that are not supported by linux by default, you can use KeyTouch (google it). - CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Grouping windows together can help improve productivity.
- g2g079, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Expo is a very nice and productive windows manger, Its a lot more useful than Vista Flip 3d. I've only been using ubuntu for about 2 weeks now and so far think its a lot better than Vista.
- polyGone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nice, this should work. The light is starting to click. I am now seeing the difference between all three distro's. Kubuntu = KDE Desktop....Ubuntu = Gnome....and Xubuntu = XFCE. On a side note, I am also realizing that lights don't really click, as I had mentioned before. :) Thanks for everyones help and sorry for the comment abuse. I keep telling digg to get a questions section.
- maino82, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2on my older laptops i had to add in a couple of command line switches when i booted the livecd or it would do the same thing to me at random points... i think i had to use nolapic or something like that. if you look through all the different boot options you should be able to tell pretty easily which you need. alternately you can try the alternate install cd as honnyboy27 suggests, but i ended up having the same problems with that because it wasn't a graphics issue it was other hardware that was causing the problem.
- geoken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think he means grouping as in grouping a bunch of windows together. There is a plugin that allows you to select multiple windows and use a hotkey to put them in to a group. Once your windows are group there are multiple new features available to them. First of all the windows move together, so if you want to put them on a different virtual desktop you just grab one of them and they'll all move. Secondly, and IMO more importantly, you can turn the windows in to a single window then switch between them. For example, if you had a text editor editing HTML in one window, then 3 more windows which were browsers you were using to view your changes you could group these windows together. Everytime you save your code, you switch to one of the browser windows (wich occupies the same space as your current window) to test the code. This plugin allows multiple apps to function as if they were the same app with multiple tabs. So if a particular job requires 3 apps, you don't need to have 3 random windows you're keeping track of. It's just one window that switches between the 3 apps (or more) that you assigned to it.
As for your desktop example, it sounds exactly like the wall plugin. basically the wall plugin makes the screen 'zoom' back showing all your virtual desktops. In this 'zoomed' state you can freely drag windows from one desktop to another. The cube also allows you to drag windows from virtual desktop to virtual desktop. It's also pretty useful for viewing all desktops at once if you give the cube transparency. With a partially transperent cube rotated 45 degrees (so an edge of the cube is right in the middle of your screen) you can easily see what windows are on each desktop. - jbus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2BEWARE!!! This is an quickly evolving development version and it can and likely will break at some point. If you don't know how to deal with this possibility, stick to stable builds of Compiz/Beryl.
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Beryl is still supported. http://www.opencompositing.org/
- neko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've used it quite happily at 1280x1024 on an old Geforce 3. You may lose some performance on video and GL games, but you can always run metacity --replace if you need to.
And eye-candy is always preferable to eye-gruel. - yeahright, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I wish I had a girl, in the hood, I would call her...
- sam991, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It isn't. Get the right drivers.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Compcomm was just a temp named until the community decided on a new name for the merged Beryl + Compiz. Once the community decided on Compiz Fusion, everything that was Compcomm became Compiz Fusion
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Have you reported it?
I know that these guys are working with a target to get Compiz Fusion good enough to add to the next version of Ubuntu which comes out in October by default. They are working hard on banging as many bugs out of it as possible. It might be worth finding their bugzilla and reporting it, that way they can try to fix it. - Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2we need 64-bit support~!
- SVPirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If it's the same song I think it is, you got that back to front, it's actually:
"I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller..."
I only remember because that song drove me nuts in the chart for weeks on end when I was a teenager... -
