- Rudegar, on 08/03/2008, -8/+48buried by Rieser :P
- BuckCynnie, on 08/03/2008, -0/+20I've been using Ext2IFS for years, but I only use it for Ext3 not sure if it does the other stuff.
- michuk, on 08/03/2008, -0/+17Thats a pretty huge drawback :)
The approach with coLinux is universal - it works with any type of filesystem, current or future, it supports encrypted partitions as well, basically anything a normal Linux installation suports. - mishaco, on 08/03/2008, -12/+27reiser fs is a killer
- Zerophnx, on 08/03/2008, -2/+13Did you forget to mount your brain cells before making that remark?
- inactive, on 08/03/2008, -0/+9Agree with Swazo - Oh boo ***** hoo to those who think it matters. ReiserFS and Reiser4 are both fine Filesystems and if you think it matters that the person behind some of the code and designs is crazy then ***** you.
I don't care about people knowing that Reiser killed his wife and was a Linux developer. Oh no, somebody who's committed code into the OS i use has also participated in illegal activities!!11 I'm going to become a murderer! - johndavidjack, on 08/03/2008, -3/+12This seems like a royal pain in the ass for something so trivial. It's easier to go the opposite direction. Boot linux and mount the Windows/NTFS partition.
Eh, it was an interesting read, and probably took some time to figure out, so dugg... - BuckCynnie, on 08/03/2008, -4/+12Only if it kills your wife.
- Guspaz, on 08/03/2008, -1/+8So, instead of just using native drivers such as EXT2IFS (http://www.fs-driver.org/), we should accept the overhead of running a complete Linux system just to get access to the drives? No thanks. When I boot into Windows to do something that I can't do normally, I'd rather not make Windows even SLOWER.
- paulmer2003, on 08/03/2008, -1/+8Old, *****, unoriginal joke. Buried. Oh, HAHA, BURIED! LIKE NINA! LOLL!!!
Not really funny. - DavidDigg, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7After the Reiser affair --- every time I see something that mentions ReiserFS, I instinctively think "wife killer." I have no idea why those in a position to do so don't put out a press release to the effect "In recognition of ..., and with all due respect to the victims, we have decided to rename the project to Foobar3000."
I mean, these are, ultimately, just lines of code. But allowing a killer to gain recognition for the hard work of others is not right.
More to the point, imagine this conversation:
Girl: "You're cute. What do you do?"
Geek: "I work on ReiserFS, it makes your computer go super fast." (hey we have to tone down the level of technical detail here)
Girl: "Cool! But that's such a funny name why is it called that?"
Geek: "Well, you see it's named after this really smart guy Hans Reiser who ended up killing his wife."
Girl: "I think I have to go now."
Geek: "Oh wait, can I get your number?"
Girl: "GET AWAY FROM ME YOU ***** PSYCHO!" - CCmachined, on 08/03/2008, -0/+6But, how many deaths is microsoft responsible for? ;)
- swazo, on 08/03/2008, -0/+6Its a file system and it works well. As cold hearted as it may sound, I really don't care that hes in jail or that his wife may be dead. The file system works for me.
- tomarocco, on 08/03/2008, -3/+9Jesus Christ that is like a doctoral thesis.
Step 1: Just install fs-driver.
Step 2: Seriously evaluate why you are still working on a Windows box. - DomZy, on 08/03/2008, -0/+6NTFS-3G is stable, and has been able to read and write NTFS for quite some time now. Many of the modern distributions (read: Ubuntu Hardy) come with read/write support out of the box
- Ouze, on 08/03/2008, -3/+8/shrug
i did it for the lulz - dansy, on 08/03/2008, -1/+6sorry, colinux is not bad but EXT2IFS is a class over it for that specific purpose ...
- cgruber, on 08/03/2008, -0/+5Hi nebion, I'm Humor. It's nice to meet you.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5I like how you assume the girl isn't into technology. Plus, Is anyone stupid enough to mention he killed his wife? And would she ask about the name after "Winodws" and "Linux" being so ridicules? While I enjoyed that little skit, I have more fun poking holes through it than complementing you XD
- Metasquares, on 08/03/2008, -1/+5You've never had to write a doctoral thesis, have you? That is like *the abstract* of a doctoral thesis :)
- paulmer2003, on 08/03/2008, -0/+4What am I to do about JFS >_>
- fas2, on 08/03/2008, -0/+4Your link is dead.
- fas2, on 08/03/2008, -0/+3But really, the only scenario I can imagine myself wanting ext3 access from windows is to copy some files over. If you want shared files between Linux and Windows, don't store them on ext3/reiserfs.
- mrBitch, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3"I put on my robe and wizard hat..."
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/text/bloodninja - bipolarruledout, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3Over 30 steps just to mount a file system?
- greywolfexcel, on 08/03/2008, -0/+3If you don't want to take the trouble to mount your drives and such, and just want to grab a some files quickly from your /home partition, explore2fs works just fine.
- mast3rpyr0, on 08/03/2008, -0/+2i used this before but it makes TrueCrypt BSOD when you try to mount anything with it.
- Ignotus, on 08/03/2008, -0/+2First thing to pop into my head too. Will the FS stick around with him in prison? I suppose it may since it's open source, but who knows.
Everyone I know uses EXt3 anyway. I'm not saying ReiserFS isn't good because I don't know anything about it off-hand, but it's less common atm. - flashmat, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit - wattersm, on 08/03/2008, -0/+2I've used vmware to mount a JFS drive and share it over samba. Sure it's slow but I only wanted to get the files off and reformat it.
- DestroyFascism, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3But Windows is just... simple. Is it?
Wana race?
Blank computer.
2 Hard Drives
1 DVD
Rules
Install OS
Apply theme
Install Drivers for GFX
Now
Partition drive 2 and format using 2 types of FS
Insert a DVD and play it without accessing the web using a browser
I Use Linux you use windows. I win! - solidcube, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2sed s/imple/tupid/g
- white, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1there's a little program that can read linux file systems from windows. there's no write access though, but it's portable and good for a thumb drive. http://www.chrysocome.net/explore2fs
- RobotBuddha, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1Who actually uses reiser4? I haven't been keeping up with the news on it, but last I checked few of the major distros supported it out of the box. I tried for a while, but having to patch and compile every kernel release to get it in there was a pain.
- Coded1, on 08/03/2008, -1/+2The information is right there for you who is the one that is making the information "unfree"?
- n8dude, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1Dang, I was hoping for a tut on how to run winxp on a ext3 filesystem, but still, dugg.
- sanriver12, on 08/04/2008, -2/+3yeah, pretty "simple"... as everything linux.
- Atomic1fire, on 08/04/2008, -1/+2I am typing from linux with firefox right now via usb and all I had to do with extract the zip to usb, click the make bootable file press a key restart the computer, press the button to go into the bootable stuff select usb and change the wallpaper
that was simple, simpler then it could have been in fact...
because I all I really needed to do is figure out if it was bootable on my comp via usb, and how to do it... internet access and running firefox was a sinch as well as installing frozen bubble for my own mindless amusement - trollick, on 08/04/2008, -1/+2***** that.
- mrBitch, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1RE: "NTFS-3G is stable, and has been able to read and write NTFS for quite some time now."
And, you can install NTFS-3G via MacFuse so you have read/write to your bootcamp windows partition WITHOUT having to fire up VM Fusion or Parallels... - Atomic1fire, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1Reiser Fs is a killer file system alright
I think that the file system wont live down the reputation of its creator until the news of him killing his wife is forgotten or no longer talked about - BitKid, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1Reiser from the grave!
- inactive, on 08/03/2008, -3/+2I don't know why people are digging you down, Being able to kill your wife is an important feature for any file guru.
- krisrm, on 08/04/2008, -1/+0I am typing this from a windows laptop with Firefox... all I had to do was click 'accept' on the EULA...
Ok, fine, I'm also booting 3 other operating systems. But Windows is just... simple. - nebion, on 08/03/2008, -4/+1Reiserfs 3 works pretty well, reiserfs 4 was still being stabilized and is unlikely to be stabilized for the forseeable future - not just because Reiser is (rightly, it would seem) going to prison but also because he was having difficulties getting development efforts to focus on it to begin with.
What the filesystem(s) of the future will be is an interesting question. ZFS? Hammer? Tux3? - Ouze, on 08/03/2008, -10/+5So now not only can you play Crysis, you can use windows to kill your wife.
- Detritus, on 08/03/2008, -9/+4That was the first thing that popped into my head reading this, so I'm not sure why you're getting buried. Guess Linux Zealots want to move on and forget that their OS is "Wife Murderer Inside".
What's that about "Information Wants to be Free" ... except when that information casts even the slightest shroud on Linux, apparently. - paulmer2003, on 08/03/2008, -6/+1Problem is the NTFS drivers in the linux kernel are readonly. If you want write you need to use fuse or whatever that is.
- tian2992, on 08/03/2008, -14/+6This is a premium example of overkill…
nice geek experiment though! -
