- AngelBunny, on 10/25/2008, -0/+10neat. ^_^
i wonder how hard it would be to make my own router. (embedded, of course) - hans51, on 10/25/2008, -3/+11I love Linux and thus use Linux since 11+ years professionally !
amazing that some people still love to purchase problem OS for $ when they could have solution OS for free - or for a honest donation now and then. - MuffinFlavored, on 10/25/2008, -0/+5I am interested in combining a 5 dollar 16-bit microcontroller and 5 dollar LCD for grade A learning.
- martinmeba, on 10/25/2008, -0/+5What is the point of this article? There are tons of great embedded linux sources out there - this is not one of them. Buried.
- hamobu, on 10/25/2008, -0/+5Because Linux is free and because changes have to be published, this lowers costs for for future development which makes future development cheaper and fosters competition. This benefits everyone. Too bad lay people cannot see the benefits of Linux in their own life.
- jvincent08, on 10/25/2008, -4/+8It hurts me to do this since I love Linux so much, but buried for not really having a point, and for poor grammar.
- hamobu, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4First of all, we are talking about embedded Linux, not desktop.
And second, what you are saying is meaningless drivel. All modern OS-es are simple windows, icons and mouse-clicking. "usability" is subjective and relative thing. Between three top desktop OS-es, You cannot really say that one OS is more usable than other. - inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3That's why many of us are using it as a replacement already? You know on those older computers that cannot run Leopard, or Vista, and are just sick of the virus infestation on the windows boxes. How is that idiotic?
Check your facts. - fidoda, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Do want.
- hugolp, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3A router can probably handle a more complete linux kernel. You dont need this for a router.
- Irco, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3This truly is a pointless article. I gave a presentation on linux embedded in one of my classes, and if you really care to learn about this I'd suggest http://linuxdevices.com/
There are tons of resources out there, and if you really want to learn to develop real time embedded systems applications the worse possible way to do it is with a shallow pointless article - inactive, on 10/25/2008, -1/+3I wanted to digg you up, but I hate retarded internet memes.
- d0nkeym0nkey, on 10/25/2008, -4/+6Open software FOR THE WIN
- mrsteveman1, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2"Linux has become very popular because it was launched as a free open source project developed by a group of very passionate programmers. It can run on different systems"
No, Linux has become popular because it has big name companies backing it, doing a ***** of the work on the code (go look, i dare you). - Dalrek, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I read it. When I got to the end, I kept looking for a "Next Page" button or something. That article was utterly useless to me.
- hugolp, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2No matter what MS or supposed fan-boys sais Linux desktop is growing and fast. I am starting to find people that use linux outside the open source comunity. Just normal users. There's still a lot of way in front but the thing is moving fast.
- OneLess, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2Embedded Linux means all of Digg can have their own open source sexbot!
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1word
- d0nkeym0nkey, on 10/25/2008, -1/+2:( *gunshot*
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1I doubt it, have you seen how much circuitry there is in a router? not very much at all
- cjnkns, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1I agree the grammar was atrocious!
- hugolp, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1I said 'probably' to not cut all the options, but I do know most of the hacked routers that run linux run a more complete version of the linux kernel without any problems. This is for lower spec designs than a router. I am not criticizing this effort. I think is great. Really great. I am just saying that is not the best option to build a router. Its designed for other things.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1Having worked with both Windows CE and embedded LINUX, I would GREATLY prefer working with embedded LINUX than WinCE. Windows CE is a TOY in comparison and the Windows CE documentation is (1) largely incomplete (2) Sometimes misleading (3) sometimes just plain wrong.
To be fair, the code on which LINUX is based is FAR more mature than ANY version of Windows, so the embedded LINUX (mostly Fedora, but any distribution could be targeted to an embedded project) starts out being more stable. It has better support for multi threaded applications, a better interprocess communication system, better control of drivers and for development you can even boot your kernel as a network drive on your development host. What's not to like about all that? - simonbp, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1This system makes a great router. https://www.soekris.com/shop/product_info.php?prod ...
It's got enough guts to run a full linux install though, so it doesn't strictly fit with the article. - dilloway, on 10/26/2008, -0/+0I expected the article to have some news about Embedded Linux, but instead it was just an overview of embedded systems and the role that an RTOS (in this case Embedded Linux) plays. I'm guessing the only reason this article is on here is because it has the word Linux in it.
Those of you who are newly interested in embedded systems should forget about the RTOS for now. Go buy a $60 development kit and make some LEDs blink first. - IronDonut, on 10/27/2008, -0/+0It's growing? Is it up to .06% of the total market yet?
Apple is growing in a significant way. Linux no the desktop... not so much. - Totz83, on 10/25/2008, -2/+1Linux distros need to simplify their UIs more in order to win over the masses. It's all well and good for people that take enjoyment in using open source to use a Linux distro, but for casual users of computers, propitiatory (and user friendly) software is just more efficient
- IronDonut, on 10/27/2008, -1/+0Yeah... .05% of the total desktop market is really winning...
Linux on the desktop is the OS of the uber nerd and nothing more. - IronDonut, on 10/26/2008, -6/+0Embedded Linux makes a lot of sense.
Linux as a Windows / Mac replacement as a general purpose desktop OS is idiotic.
Glad 1 in 50 Linux articles on Digg actually makes sense. - abbathdoom, on 10/25/2008, -10/+2Dugg for having Linux in the title

What is Digg?
