Yeah, it's a conspiracy. - durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -2/+18I've been working on an open source social networking software called Appleseed for about 3 years now. It's pretty far along, and it's major feature is that it uses a truly distributed model (ie, users on one appleseed "node" can interact fully with users on another appleseed node). Conceptually, everything is working, although it's still in early beta. It even includes a very gmail-like sender-stores email system based on the IM2000 protocol that should reduce spam considerably.

- a1cd, on 09/28/2008, -3/+16Hey guys!! I made this thing called a "forum", it is not really about anything and doesnt have any active users other then myself.. but it rocks!!! you guys should all sign up so we can talk there
- cdawzrd, on 09/28/2008, -0/+11Ning is a hosted service. This is downloadable, free software
- MarshalBanana, on 09/28/2008, -3/+14Sounds like a ***** website.
- fuzzmeister, on 09/28/2008, -5/+15"your own MySpace!"
Ugh, no thanks. How about "your own Facebook". - grendel, on 09/28/2008, -0/+8You are right!
They are not telling you who is going to win the election. - inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+8They are not telling you what is the largest prime number.
- kupa, on 09/29/2008, -0/+7it sorta looks more like facebook to me then myspace -- http://elgg.org/images/screenshots/full_profile.jp ...
- connieLingus, on 09/28/2008, -5/+12i built an elgg site about a year ago...pretty nice technology, to be honest
fyi.. uri http://www.floraltopia.com
diggers welcome. - benologist, on 09/28/2008, -1/+7He might be on to something.... time irregularities are the core of most conspiracies.
- grendel, on 09/28/2008, -10/+15direct link: http://www.elgg.org/
- mickstephenson, on 09/28/2008, -3/+8and thank you for quickly changing your comment to remove the "First! I am teh winnar!11!" nonsense.
- timisondigglol, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5I heard about your project a few months ago. Prior to reading about it, I was building a similar technology to appleseed. Cool ehh? Anyway, you have the right idea of how this tech needs to grow. We need less walled gardens (facebook, myspace) and more open, distributed networks.
- Atomic1fire, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5Actually its NOT a social network
its a social networking script, more along the lines of phpbb as a forum, or phpnuke as a cms - inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4too bad it was taken, I would have installed this there and made it all anonymous registration
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4They are not telling you how to catch an albino rat with three sticks and a lamp cover that was bought from Wal-Mart or *****.
- MtheoryX, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Not only are you stupid for spamming that link....
...the domain name itself just oozes with sleaze. - Atomic1fire, on 09/29/2008, -1/+4And thank you for thanking the other guy and continuing a series of thank yous.
- rdjurovich, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Read the about us page. Elgg has been around for four years also...
"Elgg was founded by Ben Werdmuller and David Tosh, and has been powering networks since 2004." - Atomic1fire, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3and more open standards, so that integration is possible on a wider level
we already have distributed instant messaging(jabber/xmpp)
distributed login (to an extent with openid)
and other projects I'm sure, now we need to branch them all to create a platform that is truly open and distributed - alefox, on 09/29/2008, -1/+4the largest prime is 42
- austang, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3especially with elgg
- ArthurSucks, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Ning is like riding the bus and Elgg is owning a car... but cheaper.
- LoopyChew, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2It'd be nice but for the fact that I'm having troubles deleting groups. Dugg anyway because I like the customizability, but 1.0 has a crapload of stuff that needs to be tweaked.
- MtheoryX, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2To quit. (hey...hey...)
- Kaethre, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Your project is really interesting to me, because I've been contemplating doing something similar. Unfortunately, I'm more designer and web scripter than an actual programmer.
A question, though: Beyond allowing community sites to communicate with each other, what do you think about individual's sites being able to communicate in the same way?
Rather than having to make an account on Site A, and be limited to their style and whatever options they present, one should be able to host his own Site B and still have the blog, photo albums, comments, and all that, in addition to whatever pages and features he might want for his own site without having to host an entire social network, but still be able to interact with the social networks and with other users like himself. - gost3, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2"about a year ago"
"the site has only been up for a few days."
update needed much? - durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -0/+2"one should be able to host his own Site B"
You can do that with Appleseed. You simply set up your site, create your single user account, and disallow registration of any other accounts, and then manage your single user node yourself. - Lare2, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Yeah, just what we need. Another one ho doesn't read the article
- MadEnvoy, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2To legit.
- connieLingus, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2nawww...the site was just a toy to play with. the world doesn't need another SN site.
- damien1989, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1looks really cool! hopefully some third parties will create some cool themes and plugins for it!
- surf77, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Please do not use pringo they have issues, trust me.. ask them why everything is encrypted
- bgrah449, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1***** you, two of my friends died from not being buddies.
- MtheoryX, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1You have some kind of problem with cupcakes?
I mean, it's cake. But smaller and more portable. Who could not like that? - MtheoryX, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1They're not telling you who was phone.
- tomcatru, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Another vote for http://lovdbyless.com (rails open source social network)
- MtheoryX, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1If they used Open Social, it wouldn't be that bad, actually.
- affiliate, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1maybe digg users thought it spet digg, and then realised it was a typo and dugg it anyway?
- forteller, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I'm trying to make a list of FLOSS WebApps etc. (like Laconica for Twitter, Opentape for Muxtape, etc.). Do you know of any other, please let me know!
- Atomic1fire, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1except that its not just a profile its the whole social network (read: a whole lot of craptastic profiles)
myspace was a dumb name to begin with.
everyone over there is repetitive. myspace is not a verb to describe your space/profile.
my my space is just sounding like the person with the profile has a stutter, or is a broken cd and don't get me started about people saying this persons my space or that persons my space
does that not sound like literal slavery - RevAradia, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Yeah it DOES sound pretty cool. Not for your average end user but for a college (per the article) or even like a large company that wants a lot of people interaction before and after and during work (Microsoft comes to mind but somehow I don't think they're going to be interested unless they BUY --umm...or steal it...from the developers) it could be a real usable tool. So I approve (laugh, like they asked me.)
- ArthurSucks, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1I'm not your buddy, pal!
- grendel, on 09/28/2008, -1/+2It's different in that they are not the same.
How is toyota any different from nissan... I mean sheesh, they are both cars...right? - rkalajian, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I've used ELGG for over 2 years now. It's a great tool. We used it for student portfolios at one of my previous jobs.
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I am not your friend buddy.
