- Roger, on 12/19/2007, -6/+82Too bad the thick border around the screen makes it look like a toy.
- corevette, on 12/19/2007, -1/+39i'm tired of seeing just pictures/text

http://media.arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/eee- ... - Timan, on 12/19/2007, -1/+25Yea, thats what I'm waiting for a future rev. I'd like to see either a smaller one that fits that screen or a bigger screen. It looks like a vtech laptop right now.
- tubalcane, on 12/19/2007, -2/+22This review is good but really old. I'm sure it's been on digg already. If you're really interested go to:

The forums have lots of info as well. - tange1, on 12/19/2007, -0/+19Asus has also said publicly that upgrading of RAM will NOT void your warranty like the sticker leads us to believe.
- houndeyex, on 12/19/2007, -0/+16But not like a sentence.
- fuzzynyanko, on 12/19/2007, -1/+17Ars: this thing is what, $200-400 and you are mentioning screen resoltion? That's like buying a VW Beatle and griping that it doesn't store as much as a minivan!
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+143.5 dumbass.
- fodder650, on 12/19/2007, -2/+14This is from 11/14?! Come on there has been a hundred reviews. We want news of the new one coming out in March. Not some month old article that magically made it to front page
- rmd34, on 12/19/2007, -1/+13I did a quickie search and turned up the previous digg: 35 days ago with, surprisingly, only 33 diggs (here: http://digg.com/gadgets/Eeextremely_Eeenticing_a_r ...
It's actually quite an excellent review for those who haven't come across the article before. Since it's about a month old, the comments section contain some additional first-hand experiences. - LilJimmyNordin, on 12/19/2007, -0/+10I'll add my voice to the chorus: The EEEPC is awesome. Coupled with a VX Nano from Logitech, an 8gb HDSC card and a LaCie portable DVD drive, it's the perfect way to pack a load of productivity and access into a small pocket on your backpack. Oh, and XP runs on it just fine. :)
- lorductape, on 12/19/2007, -1/+11you think this looks like a toy....? are you familiar with OLPC?
- kravex, on 12/19/2007, -1/+10Had one for a day then screen died, still trying to find someone who can speak and understand English as ASUS call center.
- JamesWilson, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8I just got an 8g yesterday from newegg. Worth every penny. I love this device. :) People stop and stare and ask me about it. I love it.
- jron, on 12/19/2007, -5/+13I'll pick one up when the resolution is higher than my cell phone.
- thespiff, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8Wow, I think I just found my next laptop. This thing is awesome.
- tubalcane, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8Actually it's $300-500 depending on amount of RAM and flash.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8It's like the PSP all over again (people lying about the battery life being horribly low)
- sirhomer, on 12/19/2007, -0/+7Actually it largely did draw attention because it runs Linux, at least here on Digg. Also it was annonced at $200, which I'm sure was also a major reason.
- Bjwebb, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6If you make the whole thing smaller, the keyboard will be even more difficult to type on! And if it was bigger, it would probably cost significantly more.
Although, I do agree it does look a bit too much like a vtech, but hey, I still want one :D - sagat, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6Very well written review, it's always a pleasure to actually read a full review rather than a lazy few lines.
- Providence, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6For 399...nah. Maybe if it was 199.
- skyteria, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6That's because the EEE made you awesome!
- BOSyooper, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5While the EEE PC is not for everyone, I really love this device. My biggest concerns before buying were the size of the keyboard/ease of typing and how usable the small screen would be. Unfortunately, seeing these in person is difficult as they are sold out everywhere for now. I'm happy to report that both these issues were not problems. The image is very crisp and Firefox is very usable using F11 to reduce wasted space. It is tougher to type but much better than I expected having large hands and fingers. The installed Xandros OS is not great but has
- CoffeeNut, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5These things are absolutely awesome for backpack-style travelling. I took mine down to Costa Rica and for the first time in my life was able to take a laptop travelling without it being a huge encumberance.
The main downside I found is that the laptop will barely charge while you are using it. It takes like 6 hours to charge while running, so recharging at airports means you need to shut it down. Since it has such a tiney power supply it's understandable, but annoying.
Oh, and popping in a 2GB Sodimm and an 8-16GB SDHC card gives you a lot more bang for your buck. - RedGreen1, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Does your 380z weigh the same as the Eee? Is it as small and easy to carry around? There is no reason to compare two computers that were designed with different needs in mind.
I have an X61s 12" Thinkpad which is light weight and portable, but I can see the Eee being a good low cost alternative. - JasonCox, on 12/19/2007, -6/+10"the Asus Eee PC laptop has drawn attention for its Linux OS"
Yeah, it's drawn attention because it runs Linux. Not because it's small, is cheap, has a good battery life, is durible, etc. Good job, Mr. Author-Guy. - ChildeRoland420, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4The great thing is that it actually doesn't have a HDD at all.
- greensky, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4It's my understanding they left out the `/~ key so the numbers are adjusted to the left a little bit.
- AndrewTechie, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4I run my eeePC as my "primary" laptop right now. I use an 8gb SHDC card to boot XP on, but I've found I use the built in SSD and the Xandros that comes with it a lot more. They are really neat little laptops that work great.
- mervis, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3"Ball's on your court, Jsus!"
Did you mean to say "Ball's on your court, Asus!" or "Ball's on your court, Jesus!"? - nusblog, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3say, how many watts is the AC adaptor? i could use to run bittorrent off it
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Uhhh...if something is white it's a macbook rip off?
In that case, I'm a macbook rip off. - spawnfree, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3according to the stand in my local toys r us; it runs on 'Limux'
- Dedpoet, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3I think I remember reading that you press ESC during boot.

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home - olegk, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4It weighs 5.7lb, and Eee weighs 1.9lb. Guess which one I will choose to drag with me every day.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3I doubt you will see one with a larger screen for a while, it would use a heap more power and there would be nowhere to put the speakers.
When your actually using it the border isn't an issue (although the smaller screen size can feel a bit cramped) - prisoner24601, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Does anyone know if there is a way to actually boot from the removable SD card? I do a lot of experimental work and (as strange as this might seem) I actually want a laptop where I can completely remove the original hard drive and only use a removable SD card as the primary disk. That way I could quickly shut down and swap SD cards, booting to a completely different system on each card.
I've seen comments that the eeePC will let you use and SD card for swap, etc. but it's unclear if it can be made bootable. - mashedup, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Well it drew my attention because it runs Linux. I've got a few other things drawing my attention too. So do I run them all by you first, how does it work? and do I win points or prizes?
- ChildeRoland420, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3External USB drive, or better yet, NAS FTW
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3you really wanna avoid too many read and write cycles on this baby. the SSD is not the best for this kind of thing.
- houndeyex, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3That whole black area is part of the border, isn't it? I was confused at first, since the white part isn't that thick, but I get it now. Looks freakin' cramped with that little screen.
- LeeSoong, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Sweet Machine!
- Shelbo2000, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Looks like a real nice communications tool. I'd totally use it if I traveled a lot. Other than that I think I have enough computers as it is. Unless of course you consider the asus a PDA of sorts, then I'll buy another!
- RedGreen1, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2You bought a computer to surf the internet from your couch? And you don't want to be bothered trying to type on it? Go you!
- RedGreen1, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2It also has a bigger LCD running at a higher resolution.
- absurdist, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Running eeeXubuntu on my 8G - everything Just Works(tm), though I haven't figured out how to make the overclocker run on it. The screen resolution is surprisingly usable. Wireless connections are more stable than my HP laptop. Does need the extra RAM though.
Could be smaller. ;) -
