- mspencer712, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He explains what it does in the song. It takes a process off of a system's run queue without asking it first.
Normally you kill a process by sending a SIGQUIT. If the process isn't handling that signal at all, like a student's C program or something, the process just dies immediately. If the process DOES have code for handling signals, it can see the SIGQUIT and act upon it. "Oh, they want us to end -- OK, let me close my open Internet connection sockets, flush buffers and close my files, etc." If the process isn't well-behaved or is buggy and it traps a SIGQUIT and ignores it, like "they want us to end -- too bad, we're not ready to end," then just using 'kill' by itself won't do much.
That's when you use 'kill -9'. You're telling the OS "this program needs to die immediately -- no more CPU time, no more kernel objects, no graceful shutdown, just die."
Does it make me a geek if I've already had a bunch of MC Plus+ and Monzy tracks on my MP3 player for the past few weeks?
MC Plus+ *is* the guy Monzy is rapping about in that song. "Yo MC Plus+, my rhymes are so phat, I'm PSPACE complete but I'll reduce you to 3SAT." They have a fake rapper battle thing going, to keep things interesting.
