- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -3/+44The first Ubuntu UI that I'm actually fond of.
- shethinkmefunny, on 10/05/2008, -3/+41Ubuntu eee is fantastic. A co worker just bought an eeePC with WinXP and asked if I'd help him put Linux on it. Ubuntu eee includes Flash10 and drivers for all the hardware in the device, so everything literally "just works", minus one very annoying bug; when the screensaver comes on and is set to ask for a password to unlock, it refuses your valid password. I found the solution to the problem here; http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/ ...
It worked fine after that, but it's a maddening bug. Especially when I tried to be slick and bind his eeePC to his bluetooth phone via the bluetooth adapter he bought for it. With BlueProximity installed, every time he walked away from his computer it locked and then he'd have to re-log in as himself, via the "switch user" option.
That aside, he's ecstatic about Linux (yay! another convert!) and his new eeePC. - getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -2/+31When I first saw the title, I read it as "Download the Free version of Ubuntu!"
- killhouse, on 10/05/2008, -0/+24Is this only for the EEE PC or can you download it and install it to any computer without any problems?
- Dunnix, on 10/05/2008, -0/+19Ubuntu eee is ubuntu. Just with extra packages.. they aren't changing anything. All they added was a script and a few packages... You still get the updates from the Ubuntu Update repository.
They have never claimed to be officially supported. All they add was ubuntu supported packages that you can easily get on just plain old ubuntu. They just prepackaged it. - Chakat, on 10/05/2008, -0/+18No, that's another distro that's not quite as polished
http://www.eeebuntu.org/ - xtraa, on 10/05/2008, -0/+17It's beautiful!
- dafrenk, on 10/05/2008, -1/+17I almost want to go out and buy myself an EEE, just for this!
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -1/+16that would be redundant, wouldn't it.

- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -0/+12 nonono. you can only say that when there is posting about macs.
- platykurtic, on 10/05/2008, -0/+12Posting this from my eee1000 with ubuntu-eee installed. Everything works great, I've got compiz effects running fine with minimal trouble, and everything looks awesome.
Articles like this which imply it's an official ubuntu distro are going to get the ubuntu-eee dude in more trouble with the real ubuntu over the whole trademark thing. I hope he rebrands it soon. And hopefully future versions of ubuntu will incorporate the various optimizations for netbooks so we don't have to bother with a third party thing at all - ultrafez, on 10/05/2008, -1/+12Bugs exist in closed-source software too...
- zwaldowski, on 10/05/2008, -2/+12'Cept, you know, it was fixed.
I can do the same thing, yay!
> It is riddled with viruses: This is why closed source isn't taking over anytime soon. - mcmlxxii, on 10/05/2008, -1/+11I do think that the chocolate brown is easier on the eye than the lighter browns traditionally used in ubuntu. I'm not sure about the UI itself though - on a laptot screen with a distinct lack of vertical pixels, is it really necessary to waste a chunk of them on the bar that simply says "ubuntu"?
- deadbaby, on 10/05/2008, -1/+10You'd have to talk about Microsoft about that.
- Meresin, on 10/05/2008, -2/+11They really should have named it Eeebuntu.
- Dunnix, on 10/05/2008, -1/+9Better then either of the pre-packaged distros.
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -1/+8Google Docs. OpenOffice
- synergye, on 10/05/2008, -2/+9*whoosh!*
- webcrumb, on 10/05/2008, -0/+7It has a kernel optimised for the EeePC with some added drivers. Other than that it's pretty much a standard 8.04.1. You can get the same effect by installing the netbook-remix parts (launcher, window-picker etc.)
If this is what you want, however, I'd wait for 8.10 (or play with the beta, it's very stable) which has these in the standard repositories. Plus it performs better - I have it on my 701 and everything works - even the wireless (just have to add 'blacklist ath_pci' to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist ). - ultrafez, on 10/05/2008, -0/+7Also, I think you'll find that Firefox is rapidly gaining ground in the browser market.
- Culyt, on 10/05/2008, -0/+7The smallness is what makes it so great.
You can actually walk around typing on it with one hand without problems. A normal laptop is a bit to heavy to try that with.
I rotate it 90° and use it to read comics on.
☢ - Wargasmic, on 10/05/2008, -0/+6Yeah except in closed source only the original coders can fix the bugs - with open source anyone can fix it.
- seventhc, on 10/05/2008, -3/+9Thats just stupid.
- holopanen, on 10/05/2008, -0/+6Does this guys have any relation with Canonical?
- chrisaug18, on 10/05/2008, -0/+6aww i wanna dig you up twice
- edpozek, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5I bet you could install this just fine, now will all the hardware work? Who knows. Try it and let us know.
- sirhomer, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5This is a modified version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix, which maximizes screen usage and contains optimizations related to netbooks. It's interesting how Linux can be customized for specialized applications so easily.
- Hurricneflod, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5would you be able to install this on an acer aspire?
- kimme, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5I have used this on my Eee now for several weeks, and it rocks....
- DarkYang, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5Firstly, the OS that comes with the Eee is either Windows XP or Xandros, not Ubuntu. As for this copared to Ubuntu Netbook Remix, Ubuntu Eee uses a custom kernel because a few parts of the standard kernel do not work with the Eee.
- Petrushka72, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5Don't know, but it may not have the necessary drivers. Rumour has it that Ubuntu 8.10 will have improved subnotebook support, so it may be worth waiting until it's released.
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4i'm still waiting on Pandora Ubuntu.
- wonderbriefs, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4Yay you!
- calidor, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4is that Wine? I'm interested
- gothsquirrel, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4Sweet installing via usb then having to change the kernel is a lot for someone who is new to linux.
- radu79, on 10/05/2008, -1/+4It would be nice if they'll make an Acer One version. There are some projects in this direction, but nothing really working without major hacks.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3Ye.....eea
- pHr34kY, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3Linux has great support for legacy hardware. Your best best is to try the Live CD (a disc you can run Ubuntu on without actually installing it to disk) and see how much gets picked up.
- theOster, on 10/05/2008, -1/+4in all seriousness, why?
- atbnet, on 10/05/2008, -1/+4Is this the same as the Ubuntu Netbook Remix or something entirely different? Where can you even download the Netbook Remix, I don't see it on here http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/nbr.
Or is this the NBR? http://www.eeebuntu.org/
I am still waiting for my damn Lenovo S10 to ship, but I would like to use one of these netbook centric Ubuntu distros. - MethodOne, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3 tar already comes on the official Ubuntu discs.
- angrykeyboarder, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3Someday I'll figure out why people want tiny or huge displays with little middle ground.
The eee and it's competitors is of no interest to me. It's just too small. Give me a traditional notebook, thank you very much.
And it seems people to to the other extreme with 30" displays for their desktops. Aren't these polar opposites? - mcjaggernaut, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3I hadn't touched my Asus Eee PC 701 Black 4Gb Surf in weeks, purchased last January, and was toying with the idea of selling it, but then this article came across my screen just in time. I am now downloading the image, and I've got a 4Gb flash drive ready for installation on my Eee PC. Looking forward to the experience. Hope this breathes new life into my Eee PC. I had a lot of fun with it for several months, but then stopped using it especially after I was given a new Macbook Pro for my job.
- platykurtic, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3nope
- Petrushka72, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3What spelling error do you mean? (Incidentally, it's wise to use good spelling, grammar, and punctuation yourself when making a comment like yours.)
- scabootssca, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3I read "Download the Free version of Ubuntu" also...
Which is why I clicked cause I was like wtf? - acero47, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2It seems he's looking for a new name for it:
http://www.jonramvi.com/update-re-branding-ubuntu- ...
Of the ones he lists, I like Ion the most (kind of goes with the Atom processor). - thielmann, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2You'll find Hardy packages at https://launchpad.net/~netbook-remix-team/
