http://keepvid.com/ - coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here's a script I made that uses youtube-dl and ffmpeg to download and encode (to mpeg) youtube vids. http://lnxusr.phpnet.us/youtube-rip
To use, First you must chmod +x youtube-rip
Usage: ./youtube-rip Video-URL Video-name Video-output-resolution
The video-output-resolution argument is optional. So "./youtube-rip http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ufqbbr8yL9A peanut-butter-jelly-time 640x480" will output peanut-butter-jelly-time.mp4 in 640x480 res. Specifying no res and the encoded video will use the resolution of the original .flv file.
Additionally, the youtube-install.sh script on this site installs to /usr/local/bin, you'll probably want to install it to /usr/bin for convenience. Get that here: http://lnxusr.phpnet.us/youtube-install.sh
Happy ripping! - libervisco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would hope that the background of Nuxified.org would suggest that it is not trying to harm anyone's system, though in general you are correct about being cautious when taking someone's advice of running a script as root.
Luckily, you can easily see the script source (which is dead simple and made simply to make it easier to install) and verify if its safe. You'll find that it is.
About installing with apt from repositories, that option is currently not available, at least from official repos. The script being installed is, however, only one file and so simple, that just as easy as we are installing it we can remove it without help of dpkg or apt-get.
So you're right in general, but I think it's not a big deal here.
Thanks - snafu42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a BAD idea to teach users to get sh scripts from some random website and run them as root.
Additionally, the script in question throws stuff to the filesystem without the system's package manager knowing about it. BAD.
The article also claims the filename won't be the title of the video. How about running youtube-dl --help some time?
So, when we fix all that is wrong with that article, the result is:
sudo apt-get install youtube-dl (or the equivalent command for your distribution) - magic5227, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Download File - http://www.box.net/public/y8pvf8og7n
Instructions
All you need is youtube-dl, a neat program written and actively maintained by Ricardo Garcia Gonzalez which allows you to download a YouTube video directly as a .flv file which can be played with mplayer or VLC.
Just follow these three easy steps to download your first video.
* 1. Download youtube-install script
* 2. Run the youtube-install script in the terminal as root (e.g. sudo ./youtube-install.sh)
* 3. If the script says "youtube installed" you can start downloading YouTube videos like this youtube-dl URL where "URL" is your YouTube video URL.
The .flv file will be downloaded in the current working directory. It's name wont be the actual name of the video, but will look more like a code, but you can easily rename it to something more appealing, unless of course, you intend to just view and get rid of it. - fxj10cn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you use internet explorer 7.0, there is also a great addons, ie7pro, can download youtube video, and Myspace, Metacafe, Break.com, Putfile, Dailymotion and Sevenload etc.
http://www.ie7pro.com/download-youtube-video.html - coleision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out http://MyVideoDownloader.com it downloads and converts! YouTube, MySpace, ifilm and like 50 more.
Then you can convert to IPOD / PSP / DVD / XVID / ZUNE etc
Plus It gives the users the option to change quality levels on the conversion process.
Very easy to use. This is the next generation of downloading video content.
