- Flooq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23On that note, what's with the remove of the "Old News" bury option in Digg 3.0?
- majglow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20"Certain processes are vital to the computer's operation and should not be killed. For example, after I took the screenshot of myself being attacked by csh, csh was shot by friendly fire from behind, possibly by tcsh or xv, and my session was abruptly terminated."
I love it. - MatrimCauthon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15This is from 1999.
This is the second link to this that I have seen today. Wtf? - Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What if you leave for a second, and you little brother starts "playing"? :-)
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Isn't that a feature of Windows? :-)
- r121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Really crowded systems would regulate their own load because monsters occasionally kill each other."
Just what I need, all my processes killing EACH OTHER on their own ;)
And it's probably not a good idea to fire a rocket or BFG into a crowd of processes without thinking it through. A cool idea, but definitely not practical. - LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Now, your processes kill YOU!
(if you suck, or the AI is moderately challenging) - bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"On that note, what's with the remove of the "Old News" bury option in Digg 3.0?"
Because "old news" isn't neccessarily deserving of being burried. - apdlmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Amazing.
And by amazing, I mean "really goddamn old story." - hodyoaten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'd go for an Ultima type setup. I can see it now:
"Thy user hast changed their password and forgot what it is. Dost thou:
* Ignore their pleas, secure in thy cocoon of rules and procedures, or
* Step forward to offer thy generous assistance" - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5John, why is the entire server room down?
I dunno, i'm just playing Doom on your computer.
.....JOHN! - theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I believe the reasoning is if new users digg it enough to make it to the front page instead of getting frusterated that they have seen it before and it not getting to the front page then it is within the best interest of the new digg users to put it on the front page. As digg increases theres alot of new users who will refind stuff and a community around it will re-realize how cool it is. Just more positive reinforcement for new members, it just ends up frusterating the old.
I base this completely on a very non-fact related speculation. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here here! This story has everything geeky:
Games
Doom
System Administration
Coding
Open Source
One word: Awesome - mbrindam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg for the geek quotient.
- jefffm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Although this is pretty old, I haven't actually seen this article explaining why it is useful other than that it's funny to shoot X with the bfg because it crashes doom...
- oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was just about to ask that myself. This is like the fifth story that should have been buried as "old news". Hopefully they just forgot; in the past I have always thought digg had "bury" reasons that were perfect and pretty much covered everything.
- rsteinke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's kind of a cool concept. I remember reading about it in a Linux magazine at my local bookstore thinking it's a neat idea but not completely practical. Interesting that it would be posted on Digg now, especially twice as Matrim says.
- jellyroll713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jebus, you admins really need to game some more.
- Jak231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dude wtf?!
lay off the pipe for a while, do it for the rest of us - eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow, there's a lot of people who just don't get it.
- m1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At the risk of getting flamed. Is there a chance to code it for Win*? I just think it would be awesome to kill explorer and the svchost every few minutes in windows.
Just a thought. - eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm definitely going to see if I can compile this tonight :-)
- robertgoodwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool idea to play with, but not practical at all.
- Comp1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the archvile is in there, it could restart dead processes. great.
- eosp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1* System Idle Process was in the wrong place
And yes, I do know it's from Quake. - Flooq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are cases where old news is worthy and places where it's not (like when it's presented as if it were new), I just think it's better to have the option.
(Yes, that should be "removal in my post above) - leodavinci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think a Admin would ever use Doom as a UI, as it simply takes up to many resources that could be used for doing actual work, like serving up webpages and databases.
I could certainly see this being used for a personal desktop though, maybe not with Duke, but somehow incorporating 3D/movement into the interface.
It is a really interesting idea, just not all that practical. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I choose dupe when I see old news I think should be removed, because it seems logical to me that its a dupe of something that has been posted to Digg sometime in the past.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am waiting for somebody to install this at godaddy or some big ISP.
- jefffm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5...In Soviet Russia... ... ...
/I'm sorry
//had to - benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1second time today, and it was already old. Sheesh...
- saynt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lacking the old news, I'm going with Duplicate on this one. Maybe he can update it to work on your file system, Imagine laying a couple of rockets into /boot/vmlinux... That would be 1337!
- ellisgl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2You would think they would update it to Quake with some GL effects.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1One things is for sure, in order to administer Linux, you'll need at least a shotgun. And a couple of hand granades.
- thejapa, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0useless concept. console and logviewers are all we need. make administration graphical and you get into the same problems of administration of some well known OSes
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3I DONT BELIEVE INT EH DOOM ADMINISTRATINO BECAUSE I AM A MAKER OF THE BELIEVER, HERE ME OUT HERE AND I WILL EXPLAIN
I WILL TELL YOU A LESSON FROM MY FATHER, HE LAEARNED IT FROM READING THE MYSTIC TEACHER SWAMI BANDAR ANAMBA MUKAN. FIRST LET ME TELL YOU HOW ABOUT SWAMI BANDAR , HE SPENT FIVE MONTHS IN THE COLDEST CAVE OF BANGLADESH, AND ON THE END OF THE 5TH MONTH HE AWOKE TO FIND A SWAN PEDDLING AT INCREDIBLE SPEED. HE ASKED THE SWAN, WHY DO YOU GO SO FAST, AND THE SWAN SIMPLY REPLIED: I AM A SWAN. I PARTICULARLY LIKE THAT STORY BECAUSE IT EASILY DEMONSTRATES THE CULPABILITY OF SWAMI BANDAR TO ACCEPT THE LAWS OF NATURE SET FORTH BY THE UNIVERSE MASTER BRAHMA.
NOW MY FATHERS STORY: MY FATHER WAS A VAGRANT AT ONE POINT, LIVING ONLY BY THE GRACIOUS HANDS OF THE SPIRITUAL TOURISTSS WHO VISIT KANPUR CLOSE TO NEW DEHLI (BY WAY OF JAIPUR) , THEY WOULD DONATE ALMS OF PERHAPS A RINGDALAT OR 2, SOMETIMES HE WOULD BE LUCKY AND REDCEIVE AENOUGH TO BUY A CIGARETE. AFTER A TIME HE DECIEDED THAT IT WAS TIME TO PAINT, AND HE PAINTED THE SCENES FO THE BEAUTIFUL GODAVARI RIVER WHICH AS WE KNOW GOES FROM THE INDIAN COAST TO THE INLAND TIGER LANDS. HE NOW IS A FAMOUS PAINTER. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? HE TOOK THE ADVICE OF SWAMI BANDAR, HE DECIDED NOT TO ASK THE QUESTION OF THE SWAN, BECAUSE THE SWAN IS ONLY ONE AND THE SAME.
NOW YOU WONDER, WHY DOES THIS RELATE TO MY ISSUE?? WELL IT IS RELALY TEH SAME AS ASKING THE SWAN IF YOU WERE IN A CAVE, IMAGINE YOUR WEBSITE CAVE AND SAY: WHY DOES MY WEBSITE GET HTE TRAFFIC - YOU RESPOND AND SAY - BECAUSE I AM A WEBSITE. WEBSITES GAT THE TRAFFIC. NOW THIS IS THE BUSINESS MODEL IN BALNGALDESH, AND I THIN YOU CAN APPLY IT OT HERE TOO THE INTERNET IS REALLY THE SAME AS BANGALADESH WAS IN THE 1980'S .
