All about how,
My life got flip-turned upside-down.
And I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there,
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0.
In West Philadelphia, ballin' and playin',
In the playground is where I spent mosta my days,
Chillin' out haxin all cool, just coding some binary outside o' the school,
When a couple of diggers, were up to no good,
Started making trouble on the internets,
Got in one little fight and my ma' got scared, said
"You're moving to your auntie and uncle in 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0"
So I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0 and had dice in the mirror.
If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but forget it, yo homes, to 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0!
I pulled up to the house around 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0 or 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0 and I yelled to the cabbie, yo homes, smell ya later!
Looked at my kingdom, was finally there, prince on my throne, in the town of 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0 - mlwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -116/+258OK, think about this, if digg get's sued, the real life owners of the site will pay.
You cowards posting the key, grow some balls and post your name and address with it. I BET you won't. Why? Because you don't want to get sued.
I finally know how many 13 year olds are using digg. - undersky, on 10/12/2007, -14/+106@mlwarrior:
I have actually never posted the key, though I have been voicing my dissent greatly on this matter. Not because I hate Digg censorship, but I just simply hate the general corrupted system here (biased article, gamed submission, etc.) But I will associate my name and the hex code here first the first time, since you threw one cheap provocative dare that labeled everyone as childish.
Although I see through your stupid challenge--because user privacy on digg is needed beyond the legal liability from MPAA. Actually, the chance of anyone being sued for that is almost zero--I still would post my personal info as well as the illegal code along side, because I just want to shut your ***** pie hole up. By the way, if you have a problem with me, come to my house or call me directly.

Ballin' and Playin'? Don't think so.
He may have been BORN AND RAISED there though.
Seriously...ballin' and playin'? That may be the dumbest mishead lyric ever. - JaybeasCorpus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Uhh, you know it's only freedom of speech when the government is acting, right? Digg is well within its rights to pull down any content it doesn't agree with, since this is a privately-owned site.
Let's not go bringing the Constitution into this whole "controversy." - drmistermaster, on 10/12/2007, -23/+48@ poster, you have no ***** clue what freedom of speech is
to the spammers, stop acting like asshats - AndrewNorris, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33Get mad at the DMCA not Digg. He is simply following a law that prevents the publication of tools used to circumvent copy protection. Don't criticize someone for following a law.
- Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -16/+38the numbers thing is teh encryption code to HD-DVD, it was posted Digg got a cease and desist, Digg took it down. Panties wadded as many think they have the right to post how violate copyright, Digg didn't care, Digg isn't about encouraging law breaking so they took it down like sensible stewards of the net.... Diggers however are ignorant children who saw fit to post it a million times. May the wrath of Digg be quick and without mercy.
Digg doesn't have to subject itself to potential liability just because some dweebs who know NOTHING about the law think they have the right to do something. - 5hinmyoken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22i must be a bit slow but im still trying to figure out wtf is happening :D

This is how it's against the law:
DMCA - [ Digital Millennium Copyright Act ] Passed in 1998, the DMCA is a bill designed to bring copyright law up to date with digital media. Among other things,it outlaws the manufacture of, or "trafficking" in, technologies capable of circumventing "technical protection measures" used to restrict access to copyrighted works.

It's the stupid childish people on Digg that think that spam is hilarious. - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19OK so this is a 'big' story to you people, I personally don't care about it at all. But as someone who hosts a website, I know that if I was sent a cease and desist order, I'd rather follow it than risk getting shut down.
I'm actually feeling sorry for Kevin, this must be a difficult time for them. They are the kinds of guys who are on the side of their users, but in this situation I don't think they can really do that. There's nothing wrong with posting this key online, but you don't need to flood Digg with it. My RSS feed is useless, I have nothing interesting to read today.
I want Digg back, with or without the stupid key. If I wanted to be subject to this kind of immaturity I'd be a member of YTMND or MySpace.
Stop posting this key, you got the point across, and I think all but one or two stories about it should be removed so there isn't so much crap on here.
I can't believe so many fake stories can be submitted and not buried, what kind of community diggs that kind of thing? I feel like Digg has been overtaken by 13 year olds, and the users who use the site properly are being pushed out of the way.
Stop the madness, if you don't want to be on Digg then leave so that the rest of us can get back to using it properly. - Khabi, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29No, this is a mob mentality.. and a very ***** annoying too.
Knock it the ***** off already. - gazer138, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16@Shirokun
If a number cannot be copyrighted then why can't I go posting the Windows XP Product code everywhere? Is it because its numbers and letters? Come on, its the same thing... - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12You know of course that your freedom of speech ISN'T protected on digg. "Freedom of speech" only prevents the government from interfering. When you post on the internet, you are in fact allowing someone else to publish your thoughts, and under that agreement they have right to display, or not display that information.
- indy5, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I have no problem with freedom of speech, but I think it's time that stories with the key get removed just so real news stories can make it to the homepage.
I know we all can copy and paste, but I think that it's time to stop. Freedom of speech is one thing, but spam is another. - nytechy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+22The Kids that keep posting the HD-DVD serial apparently have nothing else better to do. Everyone Should NOW read the Terms Of Use (TOS). You know the one you accepted when you signed up.
http://www.digg.com/tos - cfpresley, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12wouldn't really say this is a freedom of speech issue. Rose et al as site owners have every right to moderate content. They also have to deal with the consequences of alienating the user base that are the gears of the machine called digg.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Those statistics may be true, but if the same 3,000 people digg 17 different stories, you're still going to come up with that 50,000+ diggs statistic.
The important thing to look at would be the number of total unique diggs, which is almost impossible to discover. - Bajeda, on 10/27/2007, -3/+10http://blog.digg.com/
"Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts…
In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.
But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.
If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

You registered on a privately owned website and agreed to terms of use. If you violate the terms of use (by posting copyrighted information illegally), it will be deleted. This isn't censorship or a violation of your right to freedom of speech.
You do have a right to freedom of speech. You can go and make your own ***** website and then post this ***** all you want. - gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9This has nothing to do with freedom of speech you idiots, get an education.
- Venator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8DIGG DIGG! Support fr33dUmb of teh SPeEch!
Does anyone know that The US Constitution only regulates the GOVERNMENT! If a private party is not allowing speech on their website or property well that is LEGAL!
come on people, use your brains. - psitech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9These kids don't give a ***** about anything. If they were in Kevin's shoes I bet their attitude would be a bit different. There obviously isn't hope for some of these losers as I've realized the "Digg Mob" everyone talks about have been just a bunch of anarchists in disguise.
- UsernameTaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How big is the active digg community after all? There seems to be a 20k diggs cap on the highest profile stories. Even assuming that all of them represent unique users (rather unlikely), that's less than 2% of the (alleged) registered base.
I think many diggers overestimate their actual weight in the big scheme of things, which might explain these cyber-tantrums they engage in every now and then. - umfskibum, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It was never a freedom of speech issue. No one is preventing anyone from saying what they want in general, but this is a privately owned forum and the owners have a right to moderate what is posted on here. Plus you agreed to terms of service when you signed up.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Well put. This is beyond spam, this is just plain immaturity.
- jase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The way you people throw around the term freedom of speech is just demeaning to the 1st Amendment. If this is what you think freedom of speech was meant for, you so don't deserve it. Try getting off your lazy asses and look at the world around you. Use your "freedom" for a cause that actually means something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There is no point trying to reason with the ***** wankers who repeatedly posted this.
Digg was right to remove the key and SHOULD continue blocking all those ***** retards. - dogearedboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Just the title of this article is enough to prove you asses are completely ignorant.
You waived your 'freedom of speech' at the door when you agreed to their terms of service. Don't blame them from protecting their livelihoods and investment in this site when you bunch of anonymous ass-hats post stuff that is illegal on their site. Yes, disseminating this code is actually illegal whether you like it or not. I don't like DRM any more than the rest of you, but it's illegal to hack it in this country. So fight against THAT, not a site that you obviously care for so much. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6By the way, did anyone find it hysterical that any comment that wasn't "***** KEvin Rose!" was buried?
Buried by the same people bitching about freedom of speech on a private web site?
"Freedom of Speech for me and people who think like me only!" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ron Paul would fix things... lol
- AngryVoklav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No, Digg must take the content down if they know it exists. No one is going to sue you. Digg would take the fall - no one gives a crap what some 12 year old is doing.
- crimson117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@nonchai "How would you guys feel if technology could clone the fruits of YOUR labour ? do you bake bread?" ...
If I were a baker, I'd have to cope with the fact that you effectively can't copyright recipes. http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl122.html
So, I'd have to rely on my talent to perform as a baker, whereas my skill in bread making goes beyond following the steps in a recipe.
"Its STEALING folks."
Stealing bread means there's one less loaf of bread in the baker's possession.
Copying a recipe means you now have the instructions on how to create the bread. But the baker has no fewer loaves or recipes than he had before you copied the recipe. So it's NOT STEALING.
When you copy a sound recording, you now also have the means to produce the sounds contained in that recording. The studio has no fewer CD's or tapes or "songs", so what exactly was stolen?
Does taking a picture of the grand canyon mean you've stolen it? - nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I was just about to say the same thing; it is Digg's site and we are subject to their TOS. If you don't like the parameters, go start your own website and put yourself in the line of fire instead of hiding behind Digg's name.
- joeroot1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what is HD-DVD?
- umfskibum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Poco: Well, technically it would be the courts (run by the government) that would eventually decide whether anyone can sue Digg for allowing its users to post the number here. That is just as much about freedom of speech as a newspaper or magazine running a story that might get them sued (a la Larry Flint).
Wow. Just wow. Is that really how you think the courts work? Hustler got sued for libel, and the courts decided that they were in the clear because satire is a protected form of speech under the First Amendment. So no, this isn't as much about freedom of speech. Especially since you agree to terms of service about what can and can't be posted when you sign up for digg. - huiezer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7new post on http://blog.digg.com/

Digg on,
Kevin - Glynth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Freedom" to pirate does not equal freedom of speech.
- scotty1024, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I think the fuss is because no one should be able to call a mere number intellectual property.
At least with the CSS debacle you got the whole bit of code to rip a DVD. In this case they're issuing DMCA take down's just for a number? How does the mere number allow me to violate the copyright scheme? Can I sit down with the number and start writing the code to peel the DRM off a HD-DVD? Is the number a magic number that when interpreted in the code fashion yields C or Java to violate the DRM on a HD-DVD? Perhaps after drinking a $60 bottle of absinthe it all becomes clear?
The craziness is Digg rolling over on this. What's next Digg? Some one invents a scheme to encrypt ebooks using a key of 123 and runs around the internet issuing DMCA take down notices for any web page with the number 123 on it?
Someone needs to stand up to these people and say: a number is not intellectual property, a process, a means, a algorithm but numbers are free..
If Digg's lawyers are afraid of a number, Digg needs new lawyers. - Chasuk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Children! Can we put our penises away now, and go back to standard levels of juvenilia?
- nonchai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8unbelievable - a whole bunch of diggers getting in a holy frenzy over publishing a code that enables theft.
Piracy is theft pure and simple. How would you guys feel if technology could clone the fruits of YOUR labour ? do you bake bread, paint ? do accounts? build houses ?, work the land ? write books? How would YOU feel if people used technology to clone the fruits of YOUR efforts ?.
Getting in a moral huff simply because someone chooses to use technology to stop people from paying for the efforts of their labour has NO moral justification.
Its STEALING folks. Call a spade a spade. Just because its invisible and appears to do no damage doesnt make it a crime.
Technology can duplicate money too. What if there were a code to allow us to "pirate", "crack","clone","forge" money ?.
The sad people spending their time posting numbers for piracy should direct their so called "moral indignation" to a more worthwhile cause. Heard of poverty ? heard of human rights ? heard of corruption in the whitehouse ? heard of fundie idiots lying about the war ? THOSE are worthwhile causes.
Posting numbers to allow people to steal copyrighted works is not.
Get Real. - JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This freedom of speech thing here, it isn't. Let me run this one by you.
Say someone finds kevinrose's bank account number and posts it to digg. Does everyone have the "freedom of speech" to do what was done here? -
