- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+69Inaccurate as hell. "Apparently Dell is going to ship computers pre-installed with a Linux distro! " Apparently not. Just because people voted for it doesn't mean that Dell will actually start shipping supported preinstalled linux on desktops. But it does make a great headline.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45"And they will profit from a free OS while they are at it"
First people whine that the large manufacturers don't support linux. Now word comes that Dell will ship desktops with Linux and people scoff that they are profiting from free software. Make up your minds people! I think this is great news - if they work on putting together kernel friendly achines or help with kernel driver development that would be even better. That help could be as simple as opening up details about the hardware for the kernel devs... - daven1986, on 10/12/2007, -15/+49if you bought extremely high end machines, you wouldn't have bought a dell
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29I'll agree with the customer support. I get extremely frustrated when a person cannot hold a conversation with me simply because s/he does not know the language. It is not any kind of personal vendetta against people who do not speak English, but if I purchase a product from an English speaking Salesman/Company, then I would appreciate English support when needed. Fortunately enough for myself, I have been able to stay away from Dell, but I run into the outsource language barrier frequently. My latest encounter was with TurboTax, what a pleasure :
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27No...they finally noticed that there IS a demand for Linux.
- danmaz74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I don't mind if they wouldn't drop prices from Windows and profit from free software: it would be a great help for Linux to become something more than "that Linux thing" in the mainstream...
- IceBurrg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Which Distro will it be? Microsoft SuSE Linux 2007 Professional?
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15People - Dell already has pre-installed Linux systems:
Desktops:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/precn_n?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
Notebooks:
They dont sell notebooks with Linux pre-installed, but they do sell Windows-less systems for this purpose:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/nseries_nb?s=bsd
You can also call and order any Dell system without Windows.
They even have a support page to help people running Linux on Dell systems:
http://linux.dell.com/desktops.shtml - slipknotrobb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Our business has been buying Dell servers with Red Hat pre-installed for years now.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Well, they've actually always shipped Red Hat on servers. But yeah, just because some people spammed their "community site" doesn't mean they're doing anything.
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Why would anybody vote "against" Dell shipping Linux desktops?"
Hi, I'm Bill Gates. My buddy Balmer and I hate Linux, and think that lazy developers should only use Windows proprietary languages and keep making entirely unportable programs. In fact, we give them every incentive to be lazy and make their software windows-only, because we've done everything possible to make it so darn easy! My entire company will be voting no, as well as all of the developers worldwide who take part in this vision. - Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Penguindos, it's basically windows with penguins all over the place.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Dell currently pays far, far less for an OEM copy of Windows than the 100 bucks or so that we pay.
- cstrippie, on 10/12/2007, -29/+36Problems:
1. "Prices will drop." - I seriously doubt this. The crapware Dell foists on customers and the kickbacks they get from microsoft work to lower costs, and since none of these kickbacks are available from linux installs I suspect you'll see basic price parity.
2. Dell customer support: I am typing this on my 3rd dell in five years. I always buy extremely high-end machines, and the quality of the *hardware* has always been good: Dell technical support and customer service, however, has gotten worse with every purchase. It is so far from tolerable at this point that I will never again buy a product from this company or any company they are involved with...no alien for me. :(
We should not be so blinded by Linux getting some Dell-lovin' when they first had to be beat over the head with a cluebat just to *consider* the idea, and the "support" they offer shows such disdain for the customer. - ethanpeirce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@Insanitation
- I am an REC rep. Do you work for an outsourcer like Clientlogic? If so, get off of the 3rd party websites. If you were doing your job instead of Digging, Dells tech support wouldn't suck so bad. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think people are looking for a machine that their parents or business can buy. "Mom, go to the dell website and buy the Dimension N210Linux." Plug it into the router when it comes and you're all set.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What the hell are y'all talking about?
Dell has been shipping linux pre-installed for YEARS. I think they've had the N-series desktop computers for at least 1 year. Unfortunately their linux of choice currently is RHEL4. But if you talk to the right people, they'll ship you a computer with just FreeDOS on it.
The reason they won't ship you a blank drive is because Microsoft was using that to say it would encourage piracy of the Windows OS.
Oh, and getting FreeDOS shipped on a computer will save you ~$150-200. I should know, the GX620 I had my company order for my linux dev work came with FreeDOS. They were really pissed at first because I was in a different environment, but then they realized that they'd been paying for licenses they weren't using since we have a Corporate XP. - kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dell already sells desktops with Linux:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/precn_n?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&redirect=1 - wildmXranat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@diggapleaze
You're so right. Dell is jumping on board with the "OS" being the main topic nowadays and they' got no headline time invested in it. So the next best thing is to *hug* linux and pretend they like it.
Dell: If you're serious, just do it and offer the linux on your computers. I will pay attention to your headlines then. - BigBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Apparently Dell is going to ship computers pre-installed with a Linux distro!"
No, they did not say that. The most recent comment from Dell is that they'll give desktop linux its "full attention". - zip22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4all they did was link to the top 3

"How well does AOL work?"
Badly in any case - nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12The tagline for the headline is ***** stupid. I hate to say it, but the majority of people will still consider internet explorer "The Internet" The average user will never see these linux machines for sale on the Dell website. A firefox ad campaign would do a much better job.
- saftaplan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@technopundit: there is Free Software which is very popular (Apache, Firefox, MySQL, ...) yet it does have much less security problems than proprietary software. Not an opinion, but proven fact. With many eyes, the bugs are shallow. Security through obscurity is not a safe system.
And of course, Linux doesn't have the market share to be able to run all your software (although it can run each and every Windows app except for some games thanks to Wine and virtualization). But as more people use it, thanks to Dell preinstalling it on computers among others, there will be more drivers and ported software (although the last one isn't always better than open-source alternatives imo). Because there is more software and drivers, more people will use it. And the snowball starts to roll, just like it did with Windows. - possum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3has anyone even said anything about system76.com and their pre-installed linux computers??
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You get a choice, you do the job you are paid to do or you leave. If you're told to support Linux too then make that choice. F**king jobsworth.
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think this would qualify as a duplicate of http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Pre_Installed_Linux_Tops_Dell_Customer_Requests
Reported as a duplicate story - BigBadger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What the ***** is your problem, genius? Who said you HAVE to buy a linux installed computer from Dell?
- matstars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Whine? WINE?
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The actual article is already duggout. Does anyone have a link to a mirror?
- bonked, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Digg down - wrong reply
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually Dell computers are *not* bad, they are just one of those companies like Microsoft which is so popular its cooler to hate them.
I own racks of excellent Dell servers that I have gotten for cheaper (and faster) then I could have gotten anywhere else, because I buy in bulk when they run deals (some of their deals are amazing). Similarly, I have a Dell notebook that cost half as much as an equivalently configured MacBook - again, on deal. - grouchyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How is this news? They've had a linux option for at least 7 years. A company I worked for back then ordered several PowerEdge servers with Red Hat pre-installed.
- Fritzel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Archer
I wouldn't be surprised if Linux's (speaking as from Redhat perspective) GUI passes up Microsoft's GUI before the next version of windows after Vista, They already had an accelerated Desktop before Vista was released, granted it wasn't very long before, but Linux truely doesn't have that many more rough edges to sand, The only big one is App support, and the only reason that's even neccesary is because Windows long ago became the standard. If it hadn't, Linux would already be leading the pack - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4please die
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ever try installing Linux on a Dell box?
Let me inform you, its not pretty. You really don't have control of the packages that Linux has to install, Dell
makes this decision by copying all the CD's to the system first, and installing all the packages as a default
install.
So your getting that OpenOffice on your gaming system rather if you like it or not along with five installation
CDs. - bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a mad idea, maybe get giganews to actually use standard interfaces. That way anyone can use it.
- smojo12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Buried as inaccurate
Apparently Dell is NOT going to ship computers pre-installed with a Linux distro! Just because people voted to have the option of Linux does not mean they will actually implement anything. Since when does voting really mean anything? Just yesterday I saw a story that 80% of viewers on CNN want to legalize pot. That won't happen either.
I would love the option of getting pre-installed Linux but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Microsoft will lose money if Dell starts to do this. Microsoft doesn't like to lose money. I see them making it hard for Dell to do anything with Linux on desktops - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I always thought dell customer support was good. i spent 3 hours talking to a dell representative yesterday helping me track down a server that was Delivered to wrong address (curse ups). she was very nice. then again i always deal with the higher education representatives with might be different then the general public reps.also we had a pc that was 4 month out of warranty that had a bad mobo that they replaced for free.
- ajifans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How can it be a fact when it is unproven?
Pure theory, and a poor one given the stronger administration privileges and fewer system calls within Linux. - AaronD12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Impressive. I spec'd out a Dell laptop with FreeDOS to the same specifications to my MacBook Pro and it was cheaper by about $150 from what I paid for my computer. I'm convinced.
- dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why can't manufactures offer a package that includes no O/S or tech support. --
------------
goto newegg.com (I think even dell offers a case only box) and browse their barebones pc section. - bonked, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Archer - you are an idiot, I don't about you, but I actually used Linux during that time and now, trust me, Linux has made leaps and bounds of forward progress in 4 years.
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Urge and iTunes are loaded with DRM, the sooner you can get away, the better.

- Fritzel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@technopundit
-nod- Because there's so much on the MBR that adding a choice to boot another OS would simply be devastating.
@everyone else
-sigh- Choice is never bad, Never, if you think it is, then by all means stop choosing up or down on these articles and comments on digg. personally? I like choice. after all it's what will allow you to bury this comment ^^ - wirelessisfun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg you up! thanx for the example!
- bonked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Crazyz... You're right - that is why linux is a better choice for the average Joe.... Most software that will ever be used on the PC is included and ready to work out of the ***** box (vs. install shield wizard after install shield wizard) no Anti-virus worries, and more. It is stress free computing.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The open office option is especially nice for people who don't feel comfortable downloading (you would be surprised at how many there are) - and for businesses to save the IT guy some time.
