- Lochie, on 12/19/2007, -4/+55How crap is that image.
- Mejogid, on 12/19/2007, -3/+15I dugg you down because you're an idiot.
- Vinvin, on 12/19/2007, -2/+14That you don't have 7.10 by default. You can try installing it yourself though.
- jeddyftb, on 12/19/2007, -2/+14This hasn't changed since it was posted yesterday?
Awesome. - loganm10, on 12/19/2007, -1/+9Linux could play DVD's long ago, this is just a story about how Dell is including it in their laptops...
- sgoogle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+7No, Linux is being shipped with LEGAL (the important part of this announcement) DVD playback BY DEFAULT.
(Sorry for the CAPS abuse, I need to make a point) - infiniphunk, on 12/19/2007, -2/+7For those here who can't figure it out, DVD playback has existed for quite some time now with GNU/Linux, except that because its a PROPRIETARY format, it can't always just be included by default. Dell is now going to include that functionality out of the box. Some of you people really need to get with the program.
- DavidGX, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5And you know what happens when more and more people use linux? More support for linux. More programs, games, etc. And you know what? The linux games WILL run better than their windows counterparts.
- stutimandal, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5I just loved Dell for good priced desktops. My appreciation for them has increased 10-fold after they brought Linux into the commercial market. And now they are providing latest builds as well.
I hope the Linux-Dell Honeymoon goes a long way. - curtHendzell, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6It's nice to finally see Linux on the desktop becoming more of a mainstream idea. I hope that, as Dell and other manufacturers provide better and better Linux solutions, people will again realize that Windows isn't an inherent piece of a PC, without having to go Mac.
- antitab, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4It's not just the DMCA and the issues surrounding CSS decryption. There are myriad patents that must be licensed in order to legally decode MPEG-2, AC3, etc. LinDVD takes care of this. The GStreamer plugins don't (and can't, since (L)GPL forbids licensing of this kind).
- subliminalurge, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Linux has been able to play DVDs for many, many years, ever since CSS was broken. This was long enough ago that many people's computers still lacked the horsepower to decode DVD video in real time anyway.
Most distros, however, do not ship with the ability to play a DVD out of the box. This is a result of the DMCA (and similar laws in other countries). The code necessary to play an encrypted DVD cannot be legally shipped to a large portion of the world, so it gets left out.
Not a big deal, though. Installing this code is simple. Using Ubuntu as an example, all you have to do is go to a command line and execute the install-css.sh script. 10 seconds later, you're able to play a DVD. - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -2/+6lol @ stupid American laws. Seriously call up your senator and tell them to shove the DMCA up their ass.
- GerbilClaw, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4I think this is great. Its a step closer to liberation for non-techines sick to death of halfbaked MS OS's being forced down their throats at the point of purchase.
ANyway, back to riding my hovering Ubuntu powered D630 over my coffee table while i watch dvd's on software I didnt pay for or steal.
Freedom Baybeeee! - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -3/+6What does this mean to those of us who already have Dells pre-loaded with Ubuntu?
- antitab, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Unless Dell sells their LinDVD-equipped version of Ubuntu, you'll have to buy a new computer.
Or, you know, just apt-get install gstreamer-plugins-ugly. But you didn't hear that from me. - powatom, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4Read the article, idiot. Now she doesn't even need to do that, since it will work out of the box.
- TheZorch, on 12/19/2007, -2/+5This is consumer demand in action, something that Microsoft should be watching rather closely since they seem to only be concerned with giving big corporations and themselves what they want in their products and to hell with the end users who will actually be using them. This should serve as a wake up call to those in Redmond that we don't want Vista and its system-resource crippling DRM.
- desheffer, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Well, to answer my first question, you can find ISOs on Dell's Linux wiki: http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10
Though I'm not sure what exactly the difference is from a plain Ubuntu 7.10 ISO. - desheffer, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Does anyone know if Dell is going to release an ISO for existing Inspiron 1420 owners?
Perhaps Dell's additions aren't very significant, but I was surprised by the statement that 7.10 features "cool 3-D visual effects that make your system fun to use." Considering the Intel 945 chip is blacklisted by compiz-fusion, and buggy if manually enabled, why did Dell list this feature? Is this something they've fixed? - potterboy, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Legally, thats what's revolutionary. ***** THE MPAA!
- spamly, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3I don't know what you are all complaining about. It has been off the front page for at least an hour.
- smakusdod, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3I'd venture to guess you've never even used Vista, nor seen its "crippling DRM".
- NinjaBoy, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Well, they are probably just paying the MPAA. So probably not the best way to ***** them.
- MattBD, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2I imagine they had to pay a licence fee to make it available in the US, but in the EU it wouldn't apply as software patents don't exist here. I'd be interested to know who they actually paid it to though.
- unrealmp3, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2I just wonder, how they managed to get DVD functionnalities in Ubuntu out of the box without being illegal ? Was there any agreement with a third party DVD software player that was made to allow DVD playback ?
- ShogunWarPig, on 12/19/2007, -5/+7again?
- Burn, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1PowerDVD is what I use...if I bother to install it at all...
- infiniphunk, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1the read delusional fanatics around here are those guys who waste their money on lame bloat-ware (or use a pirate copy of the same) and then come in here trying to rain on other people's parade. Unless you're really really stupid, you know M$FT has you by the balls. Admit it. If you don't like linux/unix/Mac, get the hell outta this forum and quit your petty bitching.
- hyperair, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Hover across your coffee table you say? Attach a fan powerful enough and you might just get what you asked for. =P You'll also get wonderful cooling system with it!
- Burn, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2Since when has Windows had Out-of-the-Box DVD Playback capabilities?
- meez, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Do a dist-upgrade, http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading
My tech-illiterate friend managed it on his preloaded Dell laptop and it worked seamlessly. - GerbilClaw, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Half-baked may be a bit strong I guess... but I expect better when paying for a product than MS usually provide.
- wvdavis, on 12/19/2007, -4/+5No doubt. The other one is still on the front page.
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Dell_announces_Ubuntu_7 ... - infiniphunk, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1since never. Forgive me, I haven't used Windoze on my computer in 4 years, but last time I did you needed to install software to watch a DVD. Can't even remember what that program was called now. PowerDVD?
- sgoogle, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2Vista's DRM actually does very little, and the resource-hogging is in most part a myth. Untuned Vista uses more memory than XP due to the additional 'features' such as the Sidebar and Aero. Disabled unneeded services, eg the Sidebar, and Vista has a similar memory footprint to XP (Vista with Aero still enabled that is)
- sgoogle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Dell pay LinDVD (Corel?) who pays the MPEGLA to license MPEG2 and related patents
- mcmlxxii, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Interesting interview with Mark Shuttleworth and the Dell Tech head - good to see some collaboration there which will benefit us all. Looks like Hardy will be a pretty significant release.
- sgoogle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1This is now a fully LEGAL way to play DVDs. avoiding licensing issues and CSS issues.
Quote from another Digg User, you should read it
"It's not just the DMCA and the issues surrounding CSS decryption. There are myriad patents that must be licensed in order to legally decode MPEG-2, AC3, etc. LinDVD takes care of this. The GStreamer plugins don't (and can't, since (L)GPL forbids licensing of this kind)." - subliminalurge, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1"Let me send those directions to Grandma so she can watch her Golden Girls DVDs now."
Oh give me a break. Anyone who isn't capable of typing that ever-so-long command is just going to pop the disc into their DVD player and watch Golden Girls on their TV.
(And, for what it's worth, I happen to agree that Linux will probably never be "mainstream". I just think it's silly that computer users are afraid to touch their keyboard, even for 10 seconds.) - sgoogle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Or LinDVD
- MattBD, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1It's easy to install DVD playback in Gutsy. I got it working in Kubuntu Gutsy by installing the kubuntu-restricted-extras metapackage (there's an equivalent ubuntu-restricted-extras package as well), then run sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh and you're done. Easy.
- ArthurSucks, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or is that guy huge?
- zwaldowski, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1I have.
- smakusdod, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1Ah so that's how you do it. Let me send those directions to Grandma so she can watch her Golden Girls DVDs now.
Reason #433 Linux will never be mainstream. - b3nr, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0Fancy that... the market works :O
Nice one Dell! - commentbot, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1You'll have to buy a new computer :-)
- mizike, on 12/19/2007, -1/+0so ubuntu just now gets out of the box dvd playback capabilities, yet it's windows thats half-baked??? That's the kind of argument that makes linux users deem like delusional fanatics, not simply people who prefer one OS over the other for some logical reason....
