- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -8/+131Google and Apple care. Google owe their existence to it and Apple would now be dead without it.
- ACrazyGerman, on 10/11/2007, -24/+123Buried as Lame because they use IE.
- Neem, on 10/11/2007, -5/+100wow, do you enjoy people hating you, or are you just a complete moron ?
- InstantRamen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+92I like it. it was a bit cheesy , I dont know anything a bout linux . just that its another OS ,but still it told me what linux was about.
- burtonbe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+75What the heck was with that demo of gimp at 4:25? It was just a bunch of scribbling on screen. lol
- camkerr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+59I'm glad that they very clearly stated that Linux isn't just for techies and nerds. Many consumers think otherwise.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -5/+41I think by performance they mean hardware.
If you compare the minimum spec PC that can smoothly run Vista with Aero to one running Ubuntu with beryl, you will find that the linux box needs much less hardware.
My PC for example won't run vista with Aero active, but it will run ubuntu with beryl acvtive without any problems. - tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35Or, when I showed this to my mom, her question was. "What does source code mean?"
Linux explained to non-technical users who do not understand non-technical users. - bmartin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+35http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/Members
- EruLabs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26Its like its too random to be a human being but it doesn't advertise any porn or forums so if It was a bot...
wtf.... - PigThief, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27Those are some really effective counterpoints. "Uh," "No comment," and something you completely made up.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23how else would somebody without any knowledge of open source do it?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+36Ya where's all this magical source that Apple was supposed to give back? And no, the paltry chunks of code they have opened up does not count for much. Apple is like THE biggest assmunch in the industry. The rules obviously only apply when it works to their advantage and also, Steve Jobs is a total *****.
- benanzo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24"What the heck was with that demo of gimp at 4:25? It was just a bunch of scribbling on screen. lol"
I know, they could have tried a little harder to show that gimp isn't just for scribbling aimlessly on the Dell logo.. that was hilarious - championchap, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22@camkerr (#6885009)
Agreed, I think they made the OS seem very approachable, though were sure to make sure to get across that it isnt for everyone.
Overall a good job I'd say. - sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24Absolutely performance. GCC is an excelent compiler. I recently migrated a bunch of scientific analysis code from Visual Studio to Ubuntu + GCC and the analysis runs in half the time for whatever reason.
- joshuakuhn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23wha....? at least learn to spell "linux" if you're going to bash it, please...
- demonstar55, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21wtf are you talking about?
- noamsml, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Applications > Add/Remove?
I know it's kind of unintuitive that Add/Remove is actually used to add software as well as remove it, but still... - GerbilSoft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Couldn't help but notice how wrong some of these points were.
"Ease of use: Ubuntu makes OSX look fuddled. If you cant manage Ubuntu with YUM, you're a retard. Walk away from the machine."
Ubuntu doesn't use yum, it uses aptitude.
"as for flash... In ubuntu just browse a page with flash and install it. On gentoo USE="flash" emerge mozilla-firefox... Oh mah gawd!"
The mozilla-firefox package on Gentoo doesn't have a "flash" USE flag. There is, however, the netscape-flash package, which contains the appropriate plugin. - sabrebutt, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21Hey cntrxfrstrm.
Welcome to digg! I see you've been here since mid-april and have yet to digg or submit a single story. In fact, you've commented on 16 stories about Linux and 1 about microsoft and dell. Your comments have been useless, years old, brainless fud, too!
Now I've got another welcome for you.
Welcome to my block list! - Gunrun, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18By "Laundry?" do you mean "Laundry? What's That? I just burn my clothes once I have used them"
As a follow up question, are you a Mac user? - strabes, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18That's about the worst explanation I've ever seen. Laundry?
- brianboyko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Just wanted to let you know, Shannon McCormick (the bald host of the video) is a cool-ass Improv Comedian who does a ton of other stuff. Check him out at the Salvage Vanguard theatre in Austin if you get a chance - he's doing "Spices" where he improvises a dialogue of a 16th century Dutch explorer.
No, seriously, it's hilarious. - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19"No Bluescreens."
True, but we still have RARE segfaults.
Very rare in my experience. - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20> If you cant manage Ubuntu with YUM, you're a retard. Walk away from the machine.
And here is a perfect example of why Linux isn't being adopted quickly by mainstream computer users. Oh, and the irony that Ubuntu uses Aptitude (As GerbilSoft) pointed out is extremely amusing. - arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13A 3 year old troll?
- ranthony, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15It is the most popular distro of Linux, based on which stats you are using to measure popularity.
- coolfactor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16They can paint it any way they want. Yes, graphical Linux has come a long way, and command-line Linux (and Unix) can't be beat in terms of productivity. Apple doesn't owe their existence to Linux, since Mac OS X uses BSD Unix under the hood, not Linux. Be interesting to see how effective this Linux push can become. One thing is for sure, people are waking up to the fact that they don't need Microsoft Windows. Finally.
- doronster195, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Wow, I was actually really confused about Linux, I thought I would need to learn coding and all this random technical stuff that I am not familiar with yet. I'm fairly technical but I know near to nothing about coding and Linux. Now I'm a little more interested in Linux, only problem is that it isn't compatible with all the things Windows is. Once it is, I might very well have it on my computer.
- Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13lee-nucks
- DaMacGamer, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18I'm sure the main question on dell user's minds will be:
"I can go on myspace with it right?"
btw, I am so going to get dugg down for that, but it had to be said. - Brakamow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I'm actually pleased with this video. It's marketed towards the 'mom and pop' who might not have thought of ordering anything but Windows otherwise. Now Dell's Linux support on the other hand...
- aldenhg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I get segfaults fairly often, but that's because of questionable binaries. Of course, it's never been with anything open source - just commercial applications and games. I don't know what that says about closed source, but it certainly says a lot about open.
- nakke, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Really, using it for the 2 minutes you did doesn't tell everything.
- tdawson2012, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17So are blue screens.
- jeff303, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I don't think mom and pop are going to need anything not in the repos...
- thedragon4453, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Mythtv. Pretty much kicks the ***** out of anything on windows. Has all of the features of windows MC and then some. only problem ive run into is an issue of compatibly with my ati card. but i blame that on ati for being dicks and not writing a freaken decent driver.
- JudgeDredd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8At least Dell is offering it as an option. For the Joe 6-pack computer user Ubuntu is all they need. They can surf the web, send e's, write letters, store their pictures, etc. And Ubuntu comes with more crappy games than XP does (never bothered to check what Vista offers). Hell, I even have my parents using it who know jack ***** about computers after I was sick of going to their house to fix their computer. They are happy with it. I have them set up dual booting Ubuntu and XP SP2 (just in case they need a program that is Win only). No more calls saying, "The computer is broken. Can you come over?"
Well, dig me down for this, but since I bought my new computer, I have been using Vista only and have had none of the problems everyone bitches about. I'm thinking about installing Debian as well, but I don't have the time and for now I am happy with Vista.
Yes, the video was cheesy, but it was made for people who know nothing about Linux and OSS. I thought it was a nice introduction. - opuszczony, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Linux, BSD, OS X, Unix, and Microsoft are all relevant and usable environments, not dogmas. The religiosity, uninformed vitriolic opinion and outright FUD from all sides on this thread and often on Digg as a whole are as depressing as they are irrational. It should not matter what sort of operating system you prefer any more than the car you drive or the branding of ones apparel. Use the correct tool for the task at hand, don't make the tool used more important than how well you can execute that task.
If I am writing Visual Basic or C#, administering Active Directory, using a market data-feed application, administering Exchange, writing an Excel Macro, etc. I use Vista or XP along with Visual Studio. If I am rendering graphics, compiling video, making music, or looking for the best possible hardware for the home, I use OS X/Apple. If I am setting up a sendmail server, building a firewall and router, then I use NetBSD or Gentoo. When I am building and running a web/database/etc. server, setting up my own PC or Mac at home, running MythTV, or just for my own use in general, I use Linux. All of these choices have their advantages and disadvantages and one should be pragmatic and rational in their decision-making, lest their objectivity be lost entirely and everyone else around you suffer as you indulge your subjective wont.
A good craftsman never blames his tools and all of the available choices now have very straightforward means to maintain and augment them. Anyone who has actually taken a few minutes to use Ubuntu or OS X will tell you how straightforward it is to install new applications, updates and patches and that one does not have to ever see a bash prompt if they don't have that desire. Anyone using Solaris these days knows that you no longer need to commit your changes via the korn shell. Anyone who has used BSD for a while will rave about ports just as loudly and anyone who has used Gentoo will rave about portage. None of these options are any less ergonomic and straightforward than doing those same things on an NT variant.
If you are used to one of these options, comfortable with it, adept at maintaining it, and don't feel the need to leave your comfort zone -- then admit that rather than deriding the decisions of others that you have not fully vetted yourself. I personally find value in keeping my teeth sharp within all of the options available and find it enjoyable. As someone who works in IT, I feel that this outlook helps me provide the best and most appropriate solutions to my clients and those who employ me.
Use what you will, do what you feel most comfortable with and embrace whatever technology you feel best suits your needs. Why does anyone feel the need to proselytize? These are computers, not the crusades. The goal should be to leave every computer you sit down at better off than before you arrived. None of us can reinvent these wheels, but all should agree that competition will make everyone involved better and improve the productivity of the consumer yet more. - benanzo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That is the Disk Usage Analyzer

A little pronunciation guide featuring a voice clip from Linus Torvalds. - joeleslie, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14Hmm. I always thought it was pronounced "Lie-nux".
Cool video. People who don't have a clue what Linux is will find it useful. - thedragon4453, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8actually, i have to agree. ive recently switched to linux, and add/remove is the coolest freaken thing in the world, except when what you want is not in the repos. as long as there is a debian package though, adding programs in linux is easy as pie.
- rocktorrentz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10"wtf are you talking about?"
seconded - noamsml, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Did Linux rape you as a kid or something?
Seriously, you're the most obnoxious Linux troll I've ever seen. - Kavok, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8@GawtMilk:

Not to mention Google is probably the largest user of open source software in the world. - BuddhaDave, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I blew a hard disk the other day and needed to recover Vista and Ubuntu. Vista took 4.5 hours to reinstall with no apps but what came on the machine (an HP with 2 gig memory and dual core AMD 64 Athlon). Ubunto too 20 min. and included open office suite and many other apps.
After using Windows for 20 years and Ubuntu for 1 month I will never install a Windows os on my personal machine again. I hate the fact that I need to use it at work(I'm a developer). Ubuntu and open source rocks. If you can Use XP(no one can use Vista) you can use Ubuntu. -
