- wiresjr, on 05/29/2008, -3/+101Stop making my purchasing life difficult, world!
*sobs* - mckooiker, on 05/29/2008, -2/+75Well, there can't be enough Linux machines out there......
- BlackJackJester, on 05/30/2008, -2/+62Seriously. I have my heart set on an Eee for the longest time, and now THIS? Whats next, the Oogle - a mini laptop by Google powered by magical space diamonds?
- unionaire, on 05/30/2008, -2/+56looking a lot prettier than EEE PC
asus was smart to start the eee pc line, but how can they make a 7'' screen with two big ugly speakers on the side on their first attempt? that was more than stupid...good to see competitions here. - odiego, on 05/30/2008, -3/+56Looks like the Dell design team is back from 24 year vacation! Good work.
- MasterThief117, on 05/30/2008, -0/+35I was like, "That looks like a normal laptop"
Then I scrolled down and saw the pencil. - dafragsta, on 05/30/2008, -0/+31Wow. This could REALLY be a boon for Ubuntu. This does them just about as much good. The subnotebook market is really heating up and I think I'll be picking one up in the next 3 months for sure.
Also, I'm sorry to say it, but these are FAR more sexy than the EEE PC. - borninda818, on 05/30/2008, -2/+27Every machine is a linux machine.
- yahoofrom, on 05/30/2008, -0/+19You had to scroll down to see the pencil?
I was like, "Wow That pencil is long. I want to have that big pennicil." - nomechingues, on 05/29/2008, -2/+20I just got the 900, i still dont have it but i knew these was going to happen, and if you buy the 901 then the same thing will happen so the way i see it, it is easy, buy what you whant when you want it, and dont regret it.
- Elranzer, on 05/30/2008, -0/+18Every toaster is a NetBSD box.
- TacticalPenguin, on 05/30/2008, -6/+25What's this, the eleventh eee killer which hasn't even found the bullets for its gun yet?
Nothing will kill the eee - it has already had its success and made its mark and is continuing to be successful and prove a point to Sony and Fujitsu. Ultraportables don't need to be expensive, they need to be inexpensive, good quality, and functional. Obviously nobody cares to have a c2d and $2000+ invested in a laptop that is made for dragging around everywhere. - Aeuta, on 05/29/2008, -0/+18I don't know about that, the Wind has a pretty good thing going. Unless Dell prices a model at $400 or sub-$400, to me it is not going to be worth buying compared to the "full" laptops one can get for $500.
- onethreeeleven, on 05/30/2008, -0/+17so was yours
- KibibyteBrain, on 05/30/2008, -6/+21Or Apple coming out with a Macbook even thinner than these mini PC and offering average-level laptop performance, and a bigger screen at the same weight, for literally an entire order of magnitude more in price. Oh wait, they already did that.
- grumpy1377, on 05/30/2008, -1/+14the big boys come out and play
- Charnoble, on 05/30/2008, -0/+11I personally thought that was the best part.
- estvir, on 05/30/2008, -4/+15Are you sure you know what 'proprietary' means?
- bluemist, on 05/30/2008, -1/+10Man, the EEE really stirred up the hive. Not only Dell, but MSI, ECS and Acer are planning their own ultraportables. VIA has their mini-laptop standards initiative. Then Intel (Atom) and Via (Nano) processors are improving battery life without sacrificing much performance. All this starting next month. So many choices means healthy competition, and yes I'm really seeing good quality in each model. I'm so close to finding the perfect ultraportable for me.
- tiuk, on 05/30/2008, -0/+8Exactly. Asus killed the Eee.
- Elranzer, on 05/30/2008, -1/+8The real EeePC killer is the next EeePC... raising the price to $700 or more, you're getting into full-featured laptop or UMPC territory. Ones with higher battery lives and upgradeable storage. If anything's gonna kill the EeePC, it's the new EeePC price point.
- redxxx, on 05/30/2008, -0/+6Seriously,
Macbook Air,
eeePC,
Via OpenBook,
MSI Wind
This dealie
and HP is coming out with one as well, IIRC.
I'm totally in favor of choice, but man... I'm waiting a while to see which one sucks least. - ArthurSucks, on 05/30/2008, -0/+6Looks like the same hardware that HP is launching.
- ZachSka87, on 05/30/2008, -0/+5Funny....last I heard no prices were announced and niether were the operating system choices. I call your bluff! FACT CHECK.
- peestandingup, on 05/30/2008, -0/+5Uh, the Eee is dropping the ball on price. Remember the $200 price point when they announced the original Eee?? Yeah, that went away pretty quick.
Their prices just keep going up up up with every new model. They need to get their chin checked by another company that turns out a better model for cheaper to put 'em back in line. - bluemist, on 05/30/2008, -1/+6No please not VIA C-7 suckage.
- cantormath, on 05/30/2008, -0/+5It doesnt really matter what they say they built......until they say they are gonna sell them, and for how much, its the same as looking at a unicorn.
- melat0nin, on 05/30/2008, -1/+6I couldn't agree more.. I was just about to buy an eee 900 when I saw the battery debacle over on eeeuser.com, and it has totally soured Asus for me. I don't think I'll be buying any of their products.
Still, it has stalled me long enough to realise how much this emerging market is opening up, so in a few weeks (after Computex) I think I'll end up with a better machine.
You just cannot beat healthy competition :) - CasadeMike, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4Don't buy one yet - rumor has it that is just a huge 24" pencil! ;-)
- Culyt, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4I would prefer to hold out even longer and see how those VIA processors do with the OpenBook and others since they have only 5watts for 1.8ghz giving you a lot more battery life.
Personally if the OLPC XO-2 does a G1G1 program, and there available in Australia I would get one in an instant, even if they are now a Microsoft operation (although I think that been over hyped, all they seem to be allowing is the option of a dual boot) since they would be like $150 for the best ebook reader ever. Maybe some commercial interest will make some decent ones first though (There is a $150 one that does pdfs but its very small). The current OLPC's have 15 hours of battery life. http://www.astak.com/5Ebook_Reader.html - unpolloloco, on 05/30/2008, -1/+5dell's gotten *better* than they were before - desktops are pretty much non-proprietary, laptops are very proprietary, but so are everyone else's
- wiresjr, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4how it reads. Add an exclamation mark and picture an eight year old getting a pony ride: "EEE!" pc
Or just, you know, "E", like the letter. - elijahalcantara, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3cheer up, all this competition will be good in our end
- zach382, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3HP's is already out. It's called the mininote.
- Dylson, on 05/30/2008, -1/+4Yeah, swing and miss. It happens
- sb76117, on 05/30/2008, -1/+4heres a good alternative that i just recently came accross myself.
imb thinkpad x40 and ubuntu 8.04
figured it would be a fun to have a tiny laptop, even without a touchpad. it was free, someone got it for me from a pawn shop and it was wiped clean.
wireless never showed up in xp, but it does in ubuntu! i cant wait to get back home and see what other suprises await.
my only regret was not getting my xp install's product key before i installed ubuntu over it. - thejadedmonkey, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3It needs specs. At least 8 gigs of space, a full featured OS (Either 'nix or XP) and a descent battery life at an affordable ($300 anybody) price, and I'm sold.
- ochito, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3mmm.. two cores dueling with each other..
Should be fun. - sloppychris, on 05/30/2008, -3/+6$1,800? Nah, I'm good.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -3/+6I'm happy with my ASUS eeePC 701... I agree that speaker/screen design was not the best in the industry, but they couldn't shrink already small keyboard to proportionally fit such a small screen. Speakers are really loud and distortion free for their size. I love how fast it boots, physical size, built in web cam/mic and just under 2lb weight.
I would like to get DELL also.. it looks superb. - badmigraine, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3I've been using Ubuntu (Gutsy) on a second-hand IBM X41 for almost a year now. Like you, I completely wiped the XP install, as well as the "hidden" recovery partition. Everything works fine, even wireless and "close lid" sleep functionality. The only problem is, once or twice a week it won't wake up right from sleep if I have a lot of apps open, so I have to reboot. That may not happen with Hardy, though. I haven't upgraded yet.
It's a great little machine, and runs snappy. I like trackpoints, so if Asus or Dell or anybody comes out with a cheaparse ultraportable that has a trackpoint, I'd probably buy it. - JimmyJoseph, on 05/30/2008, -0/+3The whole point is to have a full desktop OS in something that's significantly smaller than a normal notebook - Yes, a full size notebook will offer better performance for the price, but that's not what this is about. The idea appeals to me because even "small & thin" laptops are a pain to lug around. It'd be so great to have everything I need in something that will fit in a cargo pocket.
- Lunarbunny, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2A lot of Dell stuff is just BTX, which isn't technically proprietary but highly unsupported by most hardware vendors. I don't know if this is still the case or not, the only Dell I own right now is a Vostro 1500.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -2/+4This is damn good! Now the game gets more interesting.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2Well, this Dell looks beautiful and it has Ubuntu as an option! But let's see if it holds up to the HP 2133 Mini-note (which is beautiful too) spec-wise (the HP mini-note seems to be more expensive tho).
http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/26/hp-umpc-2133-sp ... - arjie, on 05/30/2008, -2/+4Okay, that actually looks nice. $450 and sold! So long as it doesn't get too expensive with all those taxes we have in India.
- CarzorStelatis, on 05/30/2008, -1/+3Yes, but it will have two-thirds the power of an Eee and cost three times as much, the same way Apple competes with other sectors.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2for ***** sake why doesn't everyone release their product already. I am just in the right place to buy but still holding back because the offering from dell, HP and MSI have been looking promising.
- sirclown82, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2Why does it have to be a killer, why not just a competitor. I do like the dell computer better than the eeepc, but i dont think its a killer.
