- martalli, on 10/22/2007, -3/+26We have a ubuntu Dell Inspiron 520 for my son and it has been a great little machine. Makes me like Dell again.
- z0mbie2099, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Dell give us your high end PCs with Linux as well.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I want to see Linux on all their notebooks, it pains me to order a brand new laptop and be forced to pay for Windows in the price of the computer.
- DrDabbles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Just to keep up the rhyme, you should learn to spell.
- hunchback, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yay!
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'd simply wait 9 days...
- DrDabbles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It was a combination of them not building ***** hardware (for over two years now that I can verify personally), AND their support of Linux. Remember, Dell has sold Linux for years now, starting with RHEL a few years ago, later adding SLES/SLED from Novell, and eventually Ubuntu from Canonical.
- rickbauls, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The years of the D600 are over now.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I know you are just a troll but Dell doesn't provide the support, Canonical does.
- edru, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7no he just has nothing better to do then refresh dig every second.
- Coldkill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There's no way you're that dumb
- gudnbluts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I was planning to take the plunge and install ubuntu on my laptop tonight. Should I wait for this new version, or will there be a decent upgrade path?
- damentz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3His name implies he's closed minded and an ***** software scammer, were you seriously expecting anything more than text?
- Garfunkel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Very cool, it's obviously been at least somewhat of a success if they are testing it constantly and planning to expand.
I just hope they release the option on all their laptops in Australia by the time i need to buy my laptop for uni :) - DrDabbles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I want to know how long it will be between the release of Gutsy, and Dell's remastered Gutsy CD is released. It would be really cool to have a distro customized to work with the majority of the Dell lineup right off the CD. From what I gather, on the current CD this includes extra drivers for model-specific hardware, and customized configurations to enable native screen resolutions, etc. without manual intervention. Very nice.
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not in Aus. We still get crap Dell H/W - unless you fork out a fortune for the business models. Even then, you'd be better buying white-box.
- Sunnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Where the hell did you get that idea from? That's Windows. With Ubuntu, you just pop in the CD and it just works. Linux has like 80% install base in Australia last time I recall, and around 99% in China.
- Sunnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2To get real support for Vista you have to pay 10 times more than the support you pay for Canonical. And Ubuntu is so much easier to use than Windows that 100% of home users don't even need it.
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2get a livecd to see if your hardware is supported. if there are any major issues, then you can spend the next few days researching any problems.
secondly, you can use the livecd as a normal OS (albeit more slowly), but at least you can learn a bit more about the system before you install. - ungamedplayer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but unlike vista, you actually get support.
Good job trogdoor with the double post, sometimes ya gotta repeat yourself or they never listen ;) - trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think that they will just start working with Canonical to ensure that the next release supports their hardware, with possible exceptions for hardware released between Ubuntu releases ( not the computer itself but an individual component, like an Nvidia card that requires newer drivers ).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5dell is cheap and all, but id much rather invest my money in building my own desktop pc. Can't beat the prices on the laptops though
- padvani, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dell has very limited choice on the Linux laptops and they don't seem to be any cheaper.
Ideally they should allow you to select Linux when building your system, selecting the configuration, operating system. This will show the true cost saving when selecting Linux. - Sunnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why would anyone miss Windows horrible experience, 100% of people who have ever tried using Ubuntu never touches Windows again even with a 100 metre pole!!
- yodasama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nothing to stop you from doing it again in a few days if you were already planning to do it tonight... Besides, it would give you the chance to see how they've improved it from just 6 months ago. Never too early to try something different [than windows, in this case].
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know about their consumer systems, but my Latitude D810 is great.
- jacekpoplawski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We should thank to Dell for their help in convincing AMD/ATI to release their specs and change their view on the Open Source drivers.
- bruce89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wish Dell would create a repository of software instead of releasing CDs with modified packages.
- towlie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Linux.
- AidanJames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0i'm glad dell is sticking this through, i just wish they'd expand the range of desktops and laptops in europe.
- PAJK, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Buy the computer, and you can return Windows, so long as you don't use it. You can return it right back to Microsoft, and they'll refund you.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -11/+9There was clearly a lot of place for improvement... yesterday: http://useopensource.blogspot.com/2007/10/review-m ...
It looks encouraging though. Hours ago:
http://useopensource.blogspot.com/2007/10/ubuntu-7 ... - trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2I know you are just a troll but Dell doesn't provide the support, Canonical does.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -13/+8Do you enjoy getting "first post" on every story? Well you odds are great, since you've posted over elven thousand times already. This "evangelization" thing sure is time-consuming, isn't it? I bet it's profitable as well.
- SourceClosed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0You need it with Linux. So much stuff fails to work properly and complicated lines of code need to be inputted from the command-line in order to get things working. No wonder Linux commands less than a 0.80% install base. No normal human being has enough time to even begin maintaining a Linux desktop.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+5I like how everyone hated Dell because they built ***** hardware, but as soon as they started pre-installing Linux, everyone's like "I like Dell again".
- SourceClosed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0Have you seen how much the support costs? It's more than three times the price of a Windows Vista license lol.
- vsaint, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3more liek smell.
- SourceClosed, on 10/13/2007, -14/+0There are no cost savings when choosing Linux. There's an additional support overhead in provisioning a non-standard operating system with terrible hardware driver support. If anything, you should be glad their Ubuntu offerings don't cost double Windows Vista. The myth that linux is cheaper for vendors like Dell to provide is way off base.
- SourceClosed, on 11/01/2007, -16/+0It's just a gimmick. Dell isn't really interested in rallying behind Linux as a serious alternative to Windows. Their staff correctly warn people against purchasing a computer with Ubuntu pre-installed because they know users will miss the entire Microsoft Windows experience.
