- chillin411, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30The $500 difference in the price is mostly because the Ubuntu machines come with a 19" monitor as standard, while the Vista machines have a 24" monitor as standard. The real price difference from getting Ubuntu 7.04 instead of Vista Home Premium, once you configure the XPS 410 identically, is $50.

I laugh at you not realizing a 360 degree turn signifies 0 change in direction ( way to shut down your own credibility there )

Dell Linux Software Architect - thenativeraver, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Am I the only one who preffers to buy computers without an OS?
- Vinvin, on 10/11/2007, -9/+25Now that was a lame comment :S ...
- Roger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Why aren't the Ubuntu laptops any cheaper?
If they're the same as the Windows ones then I might as well get a "free" copy of Windows and install Ubuntu myself. - HunterTV, on 10/11/2007, -9/+24Nice. Especially so since the OS itself is free. I mean, worst case scenerio is you don't like it, buy Windows anyway, no loss.

The best deal seems to be for the XPS system, for the ubuntu version it starts at 850. The same model with vista starts at 1370. thats a 500 $ price difference for the comperable models. I got a feeling that the XPS line of ubuntu desktops will be selling VERY well. I am kind of disapointed at the fact that ubuntu is on a seperate page, it would be nice to see the windows or the ubuntu on the same page. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18I wonder when their linux tech support lines will start to melt.
- noisymime, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The reason this is such a big deal is that this is a step closer to breaking the stereotype you have just reinforced. Now its a little (lot?) easier for your average Joe who DOESN'T have the technical know how to setup a linux box from scratch, to simply buy one, with support, from a major vendor.
That's why its a big deal... How did you miss this? - rotarychainsaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Uhh the laptop has wireless. The intel kind that works right in linux.
- marix, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9If you know someone who can roll out his or her own laptop, let me know.
- mogydy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6because i know that dell has leverage over manufacturers, this will make them more likely to release Linux drivers in general.
- brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6They're charging
$65 for 30 days of Starter Support
$125 for 1 year of Basic Support
$275 for 1 year of Standard Support
This is kind of nice, giving the customer more options than the $250/$900 desktop support options Canonical offers on the Ubuntu site. - njswamplands, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7best deal i could make was on the e520n

It's annoying, fiddly, and you void any warantee you might have had just by starting. If you have a low cost technical staff with small fingers on hand and need a bunch of them it might be a good idea, but it's pre-built laptops for me from now on thanks.
- darkhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Damn looking at the prices. I can't imagine any small company being able to complete.
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Full specs and price comparison to similar Vista systems here: http://www.cs.uml.edu/~ntuck/dellbuntu/

" Intel PRO/Wireless 3945a/g [Included in Price]"
Umm, that is wireless for a laptop. RTFA before posting
But this sucks if the Linux group is expecting to get the Non-Techy to buy. Why?
Did anyone else just notice that you have to PAY FOR SUPPORT for the OS! That is right, usually when you buy from Dell you get the question forum asking if you want warranty for X amount of years (or comes with the system) and with that usually is included Windows Support. Have a problem with windows itself and Dell will help you. But for Linux, you notice during the OS screen it asks if you want Support or not. So on top of Hardware Warranty you need to get OS Warranty. This is totally great for us tech likes because Linux Forums ROCK in support, but buy this for your mom and dad hoping they wont get any more spyware when they are trying to view the Grandkids pictures you still well need to act as support, or, buy the $270 OS only support option. - justnick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4nrelson -- it is a 180. 360 would come full circle to the same view. Also, I like dell. The hardware is the same as any others. The only thing I hate is all the trialware they put on it and norton sucks balls.
- Noah0504, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Well, there is a huge ass banner on the main page now.
- moschops, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dude, thanks for the coupon! I was about to order a system and totally forgot they have these extra coupons all over. Anyway, picked up the same system with the 24" LCD, DVD burner and card reader for $1219 - it was actually a better deal to get the 22" LCD since they charge +$700 something for 24" (over no monitor) but you can order it separately for only $550 odd, go figure. However the 22" had an extra two weeks delay and my gf who I was buying it for wanted the extra 2" and yes, the full HD resolution is nice to have 'coz I'll probably hook it up to my home media PC and watch 1080i ATSC content with it (and eventually HD-DVD or BluRay).
Interestingly the exact same system with Windows Vista Premium was $1319 so $100 more - certainly less than the retail cost of of Vista Premium on its own, however since I a) don't want Vista and b) already have XP Pro on the system this will replace (its for a business that runs software that has to be on Windows) its $100. I wont be getting Ubuntu and ditching it - I'll a) make the system dual boot and b) run Ubuntu on the system it is replacing so its a win win for me and Open Source.
I know people are down on Dell for their hardware and the politics of their CEO but I've actually had good luck with their systems - I *could* build a higher spec system myself for about the same, but since this is a business PC I don't have the time to devote to that. Plus their CEO is just one guy - in my mind I think his move to support Ubuntu negates all the negatives from the thousands he's personally donated to Bush over the years. - dulcimer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6i've always been under the impression that linux people prefer building their own boxes. why would someone technically competent enough to run linux buy a computer from dell? i don't get why this dell-linux thing is such a big deal. is the ubuntu love on digg just that strong?
- aserer511, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6an ubuntu xps...how big is the linux game library?
- betacmag4u, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@zybch "I wonder when their linux tech support lines will start to melt."
....they set up a dedicated queue for Ubuntu so at least they will be experts. - noamsml, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A sends a message to Digg's servers, which run Debian, proclaiming that Linux is dead. Maybe you should check Google News or go read some Slashdot. Moreover, he's posting it in a story about a major OEM selling 100% Linux systems, so much for being hard to install or having hardware compatibility problems, eh?
Maybe you need a supercomputer to think for you. I wonder if you could find one running Windows. - mitrovarr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"Why is that an upgrade? You've just downgraded yourself from 100% stable and supported Free Software drivers to annoying binary blobware drivers."
Because Intel graphics cards are pathetic trash. No matter how much you like the free software drivers for the Intel GMAs, choosing one over a Nvidia card is like choosing a free software 486 over a proprietary Core 2 Duo. The free is nice, but everything else about them is so disastrously bad it's not even worth considering. - WiseElben, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Isn't it a bit ironic that your #1 Story is "4 desktops at once - get the cube effect on your Windows desktop?" Just because you lack the ability to learn efficiently doesn't mean that Linux sucks.
- tomarocco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No matter how far out of your way you think you are going you are still paying Microsoft money.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Pretty nice deal if you drop the analog LCD by customizing it.
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5> upgrade the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 to 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
Why is that an upgrade? You've just downgraded yourself from 100% stable and supported Free Software drivers to annoying binary blobware drivers. I guess it makes sense if you play UT2003, UT2004, Doom 3 or Quake 4 - but even then the 7300 is pretty slow for those compared to a higher end card. - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I wish you could get better gpu and bluetooth on those laptops.
- Gavagai80, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Linux_games
- Escamillo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4The sad thing is that you guys are now sucking Dell's ****, but VA Linux, run by real Linux people (including ESR) offered mass-produced Linux computers years ago, and you guys told them to go screw themselves, which caused them to give up that business.
- noisymime, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4No, we hate greedy, lying, anti-competitive and anti-consumer behaviour. Its just that these things and corporate tend to go hand in hand.
- darkhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3That also reminds me of Apple. I think us Linux users shouldn't forget about that those sneaky ***** at Apple. Next they are going to make commercials. Showing Old Linux user vs Young Apple users.
- naio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It is in the backyard. Hard to see...
- adalgiso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@wastern, support is through Canonical, not Dell.
- mamee, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Well I thought that you ubuntu fanboys hate corporate...
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Choice is never a bad thing. You're an idiot.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They already make profit with the hardware they sell.
Dell provide the hardware support. Ubuntu provide the software support. - Pensador, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Is this available in Canada, eh?
- mobomofo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I priced out the system I wanted and it came to $1337... Coincidence?
- Gavagai80, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Being a software geek doesn't imply being a hardware geek. I've never built a computer (adding RAM is more than challenging enough), but I've been using Linux for 6 years. I've made some ignorant mistakes in my hardware purchases (like ending up with an ATI card) so I find the idea of a company testing for compatibility appealing.
- jellystones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You know, I was thinking about even if this whole selling Ubuntu thing fails, at least Dell gained a lot of respect from the hardcore computer nerd junkie. If any of my friends ask me for a recommendation on a new computer- even if it has to be a windows machine, Ill have the recommend the Dell.
- sexycommando, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I'm a little upset that mainstream consumers can only find the Dell Ubuntu offerings with the single banner that only shows up 1/4 of the time. The Ubuntu systems don't show up if you navigate to Home & Home Office, you just see Windows Vista banners everywhere.
- Escamillo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Nice. Especially so since the OS itself is free. I mean, worst case scenerio is you don't like it, buy Windows anyway, no loss."
Except that anyone doing that would end up paying the retail price for Windows rather than the OEM + OEM markup price. - Jorlwind, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3(sorry to double post)"FreeDOS wins cost $10 more but better video card"
small ignorance here, but if you plan to put linux on that box..
I thought we agreed a long time ago that Linux and ATI don't go together.
First rule of linux right? Don't get an ATI card? -
