BSD is dying.
Mac > Windows .Imagine a beowulf cluster of those - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26It's nice to see it coming directly from direct2dell. This isn't exactly new, but at least it comes from a reliable source.
So, Dell is happy with it's Linux venture and it'll take it overseas. H-P is yet to join this Linuxfest (it seems inevitable at this stage, based on several sources). - OsakaWilson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13If Dell starts selling Linux machines in Japan, I'll be first in line.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11The GPL doesn't discriminate on purpose. If they want to use Linux solely to hurt MS then they are free to do so.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10What apparently is news is that they're going to let a few of their Linux engineers post some technical information about their behind the scenes work of making their products work better with Ubuntu. Whether this means they'll post things like "Hey, we fixed the BIOS so that ACPI should work 100%" or things like "Hi, I'm a Linux Engineer, I load Linux on the laptop and check that it works" is left to be seen. Either way, it's good to see them being more transparent.
- rento, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Are you saying that comments on OS are predictable?
/sarcasm - Garfunkel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I am surprised by how serious they are taking it, it's such a good feeling to know that there is sufficient demand for linux, enough for such a large corp to support it, and doing a very good job of it too. If they bring them to Australia, i will consider buying a Dell, but in any case, i will be buying one with no OS/Linux installed.
- mrBitch, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9can you blame Dell for that ? Dell has found that when users are upset by Windows causing issues that those users blame Dell ( instead of Microsoft ) - and no I am not talking about hardware or driver issues ( which CAN be attributed to Dell - but that's a different issue ).
- smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I dunno why, maybe its the geek in me but im all jittery its like x-mas!
- evilregis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6My favourite was "I installed Gentoo in under 5 days". Nice.
- derjames, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7hey man one is missing:
2007 is the year of Linux....
Go Dell Go..... - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Notice how his number of digg is approximately inversely proportional to yours?
- billhfoos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If Dell is letting Matt Domsch and John Hull do the engineering work on "Linux on the desktop" then they are very very serious about the initiative. You can also be sure that the offering will work well on the computers that are supported.
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Good news.
- cheerybounce, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8Linux is just a vehicle for them to get rid of microsoft.
- stockjones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Michael Dell back at the helm. Turning hating droves into loving fans. Brilliant. I agree with the proprietary hardware thing. Thats what keeps me from buying a Dell, but the average consumer would know nothing about that or care less.
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's funny......I didn't read that in the article......
- sebzzz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That is such a great news!
Thank you Dell. Can't wait to order mine in Canada. Saving my money for when this day of joy will come. I already see some tears of joy on my face the day I open that box and see the Ubuntu logo (no kidding here, been waiting for this moment for like 3 years now) - noerrorsfound, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I see you have been using the Digg Comment Enhancer:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7714 - mrBitch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1correct - you have to fix the MBR in this way every time - even those times when you have to reinstall windows ( which, let's face it - you will have to do - as this is the only thing that properly "cleans out" the windows registry mess from uninstalls all of the apps that never quite uninstall themselves correctly )
- williamdyer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Excessive supplier strength is a bad thing in nearly every context.
- mrBitch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@saturn5 : " ... Dell plans to offer Linux to more consumers in additional locations outside the United States so they too can save a little money and install their pirated Windows. "
If you read the other recent digg article about this, you will find that installing Windows AFTER you install Linux will trash your MBR and prevent you from booting back into Linux ( ms doesn't like it when it has to share your pc with another OS ) - celkin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In Soviet Russia, Linux installs you!
Chuck Norris installed Ubuntu by doing a roundhouse kick on his computer.
I for one welcome our open-source-supporting Dell overloards.
Something something Kevin Rose.
Ubuntu, running off a broken 360, will impeach Bush and Cheney while syncing with a hacked iPhone.
Wii will Wii will rock you!
Ballmer will throw chairs at Dell.
2007 will be the year of Linux on the desktop.
and finally...
LOLWTFFTWBBQLMAOROFLLinuxR0x0rs - sneakerelph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm getting a Mead.
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Two comments dissing Dell's brand-spanking-new Linux desktop initiative? You're either an astroturfer for HP or a very negative person.
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dugg your comment - it's totally true, I'm writing this from an Ubuntu E1505N and it's every bit as cool as I thought it would be, weeks after the purchase.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You really want this to happen don't you? You probably waiting to run around like head-less chicken pulling your hair out and saying "I told you so".
- rmxz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Linux has always been a vehicle for Dell to *NEGOTIATE WITH* Microsoft:
A timeline of Dell/Linux activity can be seen here:

Basically, every few years Dell announces that "all Dell products are now designed, tested and certified for Linux" (to quote Michael Dell in 2000) and a year later Microsoft stops them again. - marx2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Wether Dell offers PC's with Linux or not, I say F Dell and any other manufacturer that doesn't allow me to switch out the motherboard and put it in another ATX case or even switch out a power supply with a standard ATX power supply. Proprietary hardware is the exact reason I dont buy a Mac. Why would I want to buy a PC with proprietary hardware? I understand that noobs will not want to build barebones PCs, but noobs get angry when they get a little experience, are not such noobs anymore and want to swap out mobos or cases or PSUs and are unable to because they bought a Dell/Gateway. Just like Linux noobs get angry when they realize they shouldve partitioned /home seperately :)
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I went to use a $500 off Inspiron Ubuntu laptops coupon, DAYS after the coupon was released, and I was told it expired by Dell's web store. The expiry date hadn't been met yet, so I called Dell and they said, "no, it expired because that coupon's been used 4000 times already." FOUR THOUSAND. Also, according to Dell staff, they aren't allowed to reveal sales numbers but they've said that sales have "met their expectations" with a wink.
- mydave, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0stockjones wrote my mind. I want to write the same.
http://search.ashtech.info/Dell%20Linux%20Rolls - mrBitch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0marx2k, I think you misunderstand - Dell are OK with you swapping out the motherboard and power supply. I think what gets you upset is that this voids Dell's warranty. I mean COME ON ! if you swap out the motherboard do you REALLY expect Dell to have to look after you if the damn thing fails ?
- marx2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Sounds like Dell doesn't honor their own sales incentives?
- wayne247, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Ah! One can see a TRUE geek when they include "BSD is dying". Bravo!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Yep, I sure do..... I can't wait to cluck.
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I don't believe that at all. Have you *seen* the Ubuntu forums? Lots of addicts there. My decision to purchase a Dell laptop had nothing to do with the "Microsoft tax" of $50 or $100. That I saved that small amount is nice, but I really wanted to support whoever was shipping Ubuntu on supported hardware, and most of all, I wanted to USE UBUNTU on my desktop. My choice was between System76 and Dell.
- natenovs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0really?
cause you just boot into a knoppix (or any other live cd) and run grub to fix up you mbr. - rmxz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1It's also worth noting that they have a long way to go before they're supporting Linux as well as they did in 2000.
A timeline of Dell/Linux activity can be seen here:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66081
Feb 2000 CNN reports "Red Hat Linux 6.1 is now available on the Dell Inspiron 7500.... The Linux-enabled laptops will cost no more than their Windows 98 counterparts, according to a spokesperson for Dell.
Aug 2000 Michael Dell says "Dell is now the No. 2 provider of Linux-based systems worldwide and the first major manufacturer to offer Linux across its full product line"
Aug 2000 Michael Dell says "configurations of all Dell products are now designed, tested and certified for Linux. Our factories can now customize each system -- from PCs to servers -- with Linux. - rmxz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Too bad they charge $270 more for a Ubuntu computer than the equivalent hardware with Windows.
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/71327/Explain_why_you_made_Windows_cheaper_than_Ubuntu_again
Yeah, I know Ubuntu's a better OS - but even I wouldn't pay a $270 premium for Ubuntu over Windows which appears to be the case for the 1420 ($779) vs 1420N ($1049 if I configured them right) today because you're giving free upgrades to 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive with Vista.
I think they're setting up Ubuntu to fail - rmxz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Too bad they charge a lot more for the same hardware with Ubuntu.
Go price identically configured 1420 Dell Windows Notebook ($779) vs 1420N Dell Linux notebook ($1049) today and you'll see that the Vista machine has free upgrades to 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive and comes in at $270 cheaper.
Yeah, I know Ubuntu's a better OS - but even I wouldn't pay a $270 premium for Ubuntu over Windows.
If you don't like it you can tell Dell on their feedback site here:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/71327/Explain_why_you_made_Windows_cheaper_than_Ubuntu_again - saturn5, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Dell "plans to offer Linux to more consumers in additional locations outside the United States" so they too can save a little money and install their pirated Windows.
- Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2To be honest, sales of Dell Linux boxes have nothing to do with demand for the OS itself - the main draw from this is simply the savings. People would jump to any passing ship to avoid the Microsoft tax.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Oh no he's the person!!! (you can't say man anymore... it's sexist)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0Two quarters and counting before they kill the whole project for lack of sales.
- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2That was funny, but I'm afraid it seems you are going to be buried for that.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -18/+2you'll be the only one in line.
