- say592, on 01/16/2009, -0/+16I really wish Android would finally get on some more networks...
- LordSturm, on 01/16/2009, -0/+15Once you install the gui.
- argylesocks, on 01/16/2009, -1/+14Awesome!
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -0/+12I'm sure this is positively awesome, but all I saw in that video was the installer. I want to see Debian running.
- mikelieman, on 01/16/2009, -0/+10If by 'worthless', you mean 'allows them to run code of their choice on their own hardware without anyone else deciding if they're *allowed* to', then yeah.
- WhereAmI, on 01/16/2009, -0/+9Very nice. Damn T-Mobile only though :(.
- JanusTheDoorman, on 01/16/2009, -0/+8So you can install Debian and run Android within Debian to get all the functionality the G1 originally had, plus everything Debian is capable of? If I've read this right, then damn. That's the ballgame, folks. Assuming, of course, the G1 has the horsepower to run Debian properly.
- FolkTheory, on 01/16/2009, -0/+6yes you can. andorid is open source. debian can run android.
- gkbd, on 01/16/2009, -1/+6i'd like to get root and do this...but i'm loath to risk breaking my phone
- defconoi, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5yea this rocks, I would like to use the debian desktop apps as well, for instance pidgin, mousepad, and xfce apps ;]
- thcobbs, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4lol... that's actually cheap for a development kit.
- DteK, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4God Dam I am hating my iPhone now
- nvisn, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4You are correct. I got my G1 running this right now.
- pbol01, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4*tard... Its not a boot, but download of Debian pakage-list
- mikelieman, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4Now you can run Pidgin, a MULTI CHAT SERVICE client -- or any other software you choose -- like maybe Doom -- although Doom runs on my mp3 player so maybe not a good example.
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3You get an entire computer in your pocket.......
- fugazied, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3Thats pretty incredible. I look forward to a future where your debian web server fits in your pocket.
- fluxion, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3there's a lot of things i wish my G1 would do that is dead easy on a standard debian install but non-existant or difficult to find as far an android apps go. say you just wanted to scp an mp3 over from your home server...i dont think Android even has an scp/sftp client. say you wanted to play some good old-fashioned text-based nethack. boom! `apt-get install nethack`. say you use your G1 as a big as flash-drive as well (i do..to put my 8 gigs to use) and would like to sync it from/back to a home server. boom! `apt-get install rsync`.
its just nice to have all the standard offering of Android...AND everything Debian has to offer, instead of a stripped down linux distro. there's virtually no comprimise that way, other than possibly some extra overhead - nvisn, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3It's a piece of cake. Give it a whirl. Just head over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=4 ...
- rville, on 01/16/2009, -1/+4Ok, now I am confused.
Why would you trade an operating system specifically designed on phone to debian linux?
Can you make calls with linux? Does it have a nice UI? How about multimedia or text messages? Camera? - inactive, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3I'm not good with smartphones so go easy on me - can you still make calls under Linux? I didn't think their was a non proprietary software / drivers to do that, less gui components to present them efficiently like a phone would.
Other than that, awesome, Android has always been interesting but this would be great. - bwinebarger, on 01/16/2009, -1/+4Link to the post....
http://www.androidfanatic.com/cms/community-forums ... - SteveMax, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3debian supports ARM. There are (or at least should be) ARM binaries in the repositories. You don't need to compile anything.
- cardyology, on 01/16/2009, -2/+5Do this Debain install have a GUI? Or is it all terminal driven?
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2@mikelieman: WTF? That post made absolutely no sense in any way.
- pbol01, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2hehe... But I think its funny he trolls the wrong thing...
- Krissam, on 01/16/2009, -0/+2or perhaps some more countries :/
gief dk g1 :/ - p3ngwin, on 01/16/2009, -1/+3as you should.
however redemption is just a quick toss-into-the-fire away.
:) - blooby, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1But I'm being hip! In any case, could the duplicate detection algorithm on this occasion have failed due to the 'www' on this submission and the lack of it on the earlier submission?
- SQLserver, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1You can do ANYTHING with linux that the hardware lets you do...
Other then that, I'm not sure if calling would work with Debian yet... - orirawlings, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1I believe they call it "Windows Mobile". Available on quite a few hardware options...
- edzynda, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1It doesn't mess with your phone's os. It runs right along side it. :)
- HighlyRelevant, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1yeah get skype on there, now that iphone doesn't let me talk using the 3g network, i'm gonna be kicking myself.
http://www.pharmcast.com/Calendar/MarcusEvans.htm - blackjack75, on 01/16/2009, -1/+2The developer g1 phone that you can buy from google is fully unlocked. (400$ plus an outrageous shipping fee)
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -1/+2Unfortunately that would fail, because when you're on public WiFi, it's going to be impossible to set up a web server, because you have no access to the public router for port forwarding.
- dakdak900, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1damn it! I was hoping there would have been a reply about some ACTUALLY cool function of this install
Don't get my interest confused with the linux haters here. If you want linux to catch on then the first comment or 2 on a story should briefly explain why I should care.
written from my Ubuntu 8.10 box - MartyMcFly713, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1Does anyone have a vid of this actually doing anything else besides installing?
- cardyology, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1can you install the GUI? Cos I just read that you cant install X server for some reason.
- screensnot, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1Who?
- Rememberthe0511, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1One Step closer to getting Skype on there.
- MrChunks, on 01/16/2009, -1/+2Do what? Install Debian? Eh?
- andreusboy, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1The power of all the GNU utilities, scripting, programs, shells, media players?! Its over... <: D
- orirawlings, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1I have a G1 and love Android. I haven't had much of a chance to dig around with the SDK yet, but I'm wondering what the point of installing Debian is... trading GNU/Linux for GNU/Linux...? I suppose it opens up alot of other software options to you, but how many of those are useful on a phone. And how many of those are incapable of being ported/ developed to run on the Dalvik Virtual Machine? Granted having a terminal on the phone would be quite handy.
- etx313, on 01/17/2009, -0/+1Android already has skype.
- shuffer, on 01/16/2009, -1/+1When?
- mikelieman, on 01/16/2009, -2/+2Um... One of the great things about User Interfaces these days, is that if you have a browser, the best way to present an application is via a webpage.
So, running a local webserver, which hosts an application isn't really a bad idea offhand.
http://localhost/toolkit
and Voila.
Now, I suppose it's only a matter of time before someone installs Tomcat, so you can just deploy whatever .war files you want on the thing. I don't know if that's a *good* thing or not... I suppose it depends on the available horsepower. - thcobbs, on 01/16/2009, -1/+1the problem is that you're going to have to cross-compile all those apps unless the cellphone you're running has an x86 compatible processor.
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -1/+0when reading about the "cupcake update" it said it was bringing x86 to andriod. so wouldnt that mean the processor has to support it?
- Swivelstick, on 01/16/2009, -2/+1and and super Danger Will Robinson Danger and and and
- Azathothh, on 01/16/2009, -2/+1you dont need Linux for that.
