- SlapAyoda, on 02/15/2009, -1/+31I've been following Lenny for months, and this really is a great leap forward for Debian. Nice work, guys!
- 3242130193, on 02/15/2009, -1/+24Is it September already? Man, how time flies.
- Groady, on 02/16/2009, -1/+23I have to say, for all the efforts the devs put into making Linux you would think they could make a website that doesn't look like it was designed in 1996 (it probably was).
- NobodyWhoCares, on 02/16/2009, -0/+21Take it you've never used Debian before?
Lenny is their new stable release. It's not designed to be the absolutely latest and greatest, but more what's going to run a bajillion years without a reboot, just like Etch which it's replacing.
If you want bleeding edge current and don't mind occasional breakage, you'll want to switch to the Debian Sid repositories. That's where the new stuff is, at least now that Lenny is done and Sid can get unfrozen again. - MrMinit, on 02/15/2009, -0/+18Debian has been my distribution of choice since I first tried GNU/Linux, thanks guys.
- jeddyftb, on 02/16/2009, -1/+18Debian takes "better safe than sorry" to new extremes.
Congrats on the release. - Macskeeball, on 02/15/2009, -0/+16Notes on upgrading: http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/i386/release- ...
- talkingwires, on 02/15/2009, -0/+15Debian doesn't have a set release cycle like many other distros. One of the reasons there's such a gap between releases is that Debian doesn't go into feature-freeze, but has ship the next month whether there's still bugs or not. They are committed to stamping out as many bugs as possible before shipping.
The downside to this is that their stable versions often have very outdated software. Lenny is shipping with a year-old version of Gnome, for instance. But this is why it's a very popular server distro; it's very stable. It's also supported for years, easy to update, and easy to configure. A stable environment, well supported environment is critical to building custom server applications. - MacEnvy, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1425,000 packages take up some space.
- Krissam, on 02/16/2009, -0/+13anyone still got a floppy drive laying around?
- trmanco, on 02/15/2009, -0/+13We can now start waiting for "Squeeze" :-P
- Narcelia, on 02/15/2009, -1/+14Screenshots + DPL interview here: http://www.tuxradar.com/content/lenny-has-landed
- zip000, on 02/16/2009, -0/+11That's kind of the point with Debian: they aren't going for cutting edge they're going for absolute stability.
- Vinvin, on 02/15/2009, -0/+10FINALLY!
- consoneo, on 02/16/2009, -3/+12Windows 7 beta is a pretty remarkable bit of code for being a beta... It runs better than Vista and XP. It's just got driver issues now, and that's about it.
- uRmyHartBstopR, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8It's should be the other way around. >,>
- rmxz, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8Not necessarily. The strength of Debian over other distros is that Debian Stable *is* stable and free from practically any non-security related unnecessary changes. If you want something that moves faster there are zillions of other distros - including Debian Unstable if you prefer less stable distros.
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -1/+9Or just do a net install. All you need is two floppy disks.
- Megatog615, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8I've heard that generally most of the contributions the Ubuntu team makes upstream don't get accepted into Debian because they are usually simple UI changes for user convenience(which may or may not piss off the average Linux user), or bugfixes(which usually introduce more bugs).
Ubuntu is essentially Debian Sid with some packages from Experimental and their own UI changes + their in-house user-convenience apps(hardware drivers app, etc). On the visibility-side they have their own in-house GTK theme. - volcompimp, on 02/16/2009, -1/+8Sweet, glad to see eeepc is supported officially now.
- djbon2112, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7It's not just that easy. The last distro was released 2 years ago, a lot has changed. Old config settings might not work.
- zip000, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7It was my first distribution - I remember being really blown away by it.
I've switched over to Ubuntu because I like a few of the things that they do better and because it is easier to find help when you're stuck.
But Debian will always have a place in my heart. - NodOfficer, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7I disagree.
Bajillion is an understatement. - uRmyHartBstopR, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7Programmers != Web Designers.
- uRmyHartBstopR, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7Go to sabayon then. It's so bleeding edge that it's buggy as hell.. Did they fix it yet? >,>
- XeroXenith, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6Then go back to Windows. GNU/Linux isn't for everyone -- yet. :)
(But first, learn the difference between "shareware" and "free software".) - kartikm, on 02/15/2009, -2/+8Congrats to all!
- chromerium, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6being up to date isn't always a good thing, I've found.
- HCviolence, on 02/15/2009, -10/+16I've been waiting for an excuse to delete windows 7 beta.
- djbon2112, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6I use Ubuntu for my desktops, and now Debian Lenny for my servers (upgrading tonight). Speed and modernness for the desktop, stability for the servers.
- langui16, on 02/15/2009, -1/+7Congratulations ! I love Debian, been using it for more than 2 years.
Keep on the good work ! - inactive, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6Well at least we're all sharing in the spirit of F/OSS brotherhood.
- JimmyTheClam, on 02/16/2009, -2/+8Props to Ubuntu?
Debian users typically spit on Ubuntu and anybody that uses it.
They would rather shut down the distro than give props to Ubuntu. - stmiller, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5digg.com runs on Debian. :)
- chromerium, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5Check your sources.list
deb http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
If you have testing instead of lenny (or stable) then you'll want to change it if you want to stay on lenny for now. Otherwise when they start pushing out packages for the new testing, things may get hairy for a while ;) - TonyCubed, on 02/16/2009, -1/+6It's a shame that distros like Ubuntu etc are more up to date, but Debian is made for stability, so that's cool! :)
- flibblesan, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5It's Debian. You update using the power of your mind and a thousand beards.
- djbon2112, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5@sej: You can enable the unstable repos and upgrade the software; it's not like Debian actively prevents it.
- BigglesPiP, on 02/15/2009, -1/+5w00t, seems an apt-get upgrade has moved my install from testing to stable. 'cat /etc/debian_version' now shows '5.0'.
- fugazied, on 02/16/2009, -1/+5I use Debian on my web server, pretty solid!
- freshivore, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Love me some debian, It's all I run on our production boxes!
- mazza558, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4The main difference is the release schedule. Ubuntu releases the cutting edge every 6 monts, and Debian goes for a slower "when it's ready" approach, and a release is every 1.5 to 2 years typically. For this reason, Debian is often very solid and stable due to its time-tested programs. However, some people want something a bit more representative of where Linux is at in 2009 - Ubuntu is a good example, but it might be more unstable/buggy.
Having said that, Ubuntu's a lot easier to get started with, and has some pretty good improvements on Debian (mostly in user tools adopted from upstream in Fedora/Debian itself, as well as Ubuntu's own creations). - XeroXenith, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Exactly - you don't need all of them. Just get the first of either, or two if you're feeling greedy.
- daengbo, on 02/16/2009, -1/+5Aptitude is now preferred over apt-get. Hehe.
aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade - srg13, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3What's wrong with that? I imagine that it would take a lot of space to store Windows and every application freely available for it as well....
- Vadi0, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Congrats to Debian! Foundations of the distro I use ;)
- etx313, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Back in the day I went from Slack, to Debian, to Gentoo, and back to Debian to stay. <3
- sej7278, on 02/15/2009, -1/+4hell the way debian staggers releases, ANY new release is a great leap forward!
