- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33holy crap! i hadn't seen a vid of xgl yet, but DAMN! i'm an apple fanboy, but *****, that's better than anything i've seen os x do.
unfortunately, i can't get xgl to work on my powerbook since the ati drivers are only for intel... - eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27jimmygoon, just because it works for you, doesn't mean it works for everybody. I love Ubuntu, but please be honest about XGL. It's still alpha software, bottom line.
- paperface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17The site tells me I need the newest version of flash player. Which is tricky, on account of the latest version isn't available for Linux. Ah, sweet irony.
- bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17holy ***** *****... that XGL is slick. I'd take that over Vista 8 days a week.
- ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16XGL is a great proof concept and probably has huge potential. but in comparison with Mac OS X's Quartz, the latter is fully integrated into the window manager of OS X, whereas XGL is essentially an "eye candy layer."
This means that OpenGL activities (3D modeling apps, games, etc) can work seamlessly inside an OS X window, solid as a rock. However, under XGL any 3D activity, including a simple 3D screensaver, can get very messy.
Needs a lot of work to play nice with other apps so that's why Dapper doesn't have it on by default. However, the next release of Ubuntu, Edgy Eft, will make it active out of the box. Here's hoping it blows away the Vista eye candy! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18It's just one big happy circle jerk.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17XGL barely works? Man, I love a good joke. It's 70% done and I have run it on my 32 MB Geforce 2 with excellent stability.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Don't use an ati card. Ati drivers are a complete joke (on linux.) XGL on an x1600 was so slow it was ridiculous. Meanwhile, on an nvidia geforce 2, it ran accepatbly fast.
- CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Awesome. I really need to install 6.06 to try out XGL. Eat it, Microsoft.
- fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And according to ubuntu's 6 month release date, eft(6.12) will be out just before vista. Yay!
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10My mom's computer is running a 64MB MX440 and runs XGL fairly smoothly. It's like a 20 dollar card.
Just make sure that, whatever it is, it's nVidia. :) - brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9lol, yes Drapper does look great. I heard Vister is gonna turn out well too ;)
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'll admit, I'm not a fan of linux in fact I'm a Windows user. But I will have to say, I am stunned on how well linux is progressing... Drapper looks great!
- tgone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8funny, I'm using Ubuntu and I can't watch these videos. Anybody know what plugin is required to view these?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I want to install xgl now.
- brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12has anyone noticed how friendly these comments are? Not a single troller yet, and nobody buried! I guess Ubuntu and xgl brings out the best in people :)
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If you just want to try XGL, get the Kororra Live CD. You don't want to run it on Dapper, it's still alpha software.
(Dapper is awesome, but dealing with XGL just isn't worth it atm) - manbearpigm16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I installed Ubuntu a couple days ago and I have to say it is slick as hell, besides gaming I can do everything I want with it. I am very close to switching full time, if I get another pc it'll most likely happen.
- wedgea18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Are you asking what video card?
I use a Winfast GeForce 6200 TD (256mb ram) and it works great with XGL.
You can find it for about $100. - redalert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6there should be a vlc plugin for firefox that should let you play the videos
- beavord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://osvids.com/files/page3-movie-35.mov
- babbling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7For gaming, give Cedega and/or WINE a go. For any reasonably well known games, either Cedega or WINE will run them. Usually, getting a game to work might require a bit of fiddling, though.
It's worth a shot if there's just a few games like Battlefield and World of Warcraft that you want to play without needing to reboot. Cedega runs Battlefield, WINE runs World of Warcraft. - doctapeppa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It would have been nice if videos aboout linux were made in a more "linux friendly" format.
- axiomata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Watching that xgl/compiz vid makes me even more frustrated that I can't get it to work.
- zachtib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i beleive you need alsa-oss or something to get soud working in firefox, poke around on ubuntuforums.org
after that it works flawlessly for me - bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7follow up, what (affordable [under $100]) could give me this performance? It would be great if someone could throw me a bone.
Timmay - Ensnared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"And according to ubuntu's 6 month release date, eft(6.12) will be out just before vista. Yay!"
Edgy Eft is still 6.10, not 6.12 (e.g. October, not December). Dapper Drake was pushed back 2 months, but that doesn't mean the entire release-schedule got skewed by 2 months.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyEft - pygmalion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Quicktime plugin is required for some videos, Flash plugin for others.
- pacslash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am currently running Ubuntu on my Inspiron 6000, and both scroll bars on the touchpad are working correctly, along with WPA2 on the built in IWP2200.
- axiomata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What sort of system and what tut did you use to get it working?
- JerMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree. Linux/Ubuntu is great, but it's a royal pain in the ass to get wireless running easily, especially on a laptop that sees multiple networks on a regular basis. I hope the wireless group dummyproofs this sometime soon.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Running Dapper, I set up AIGLX and Compiz (AIGLX performs better on my laptop video card, the Intel i915).
Video is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmOcT_sDVVI#GU5U2spHI_4 - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Weird..I had almost no troubles getting it installed.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What was that someone said above about this being a clean thread with no trollers.
- darkbytes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A video demonstration (minus the audio) from earlier this year:
http://www.freedesktop.org/~davidr/xgl-demo1.xvid.avi - brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i was about to start complaining about how I can't watch the videos on account that flash player for linux is only on version 7...and then i realized I am running ubuntu. How silly :p
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been through all the encryption stuff and all it says is that it still doesn't support wep or wpa or wpa2. As for the scroll changes I've tried those too, but to no avail. I'm tired of spending all my time in the Ubuntu forums especially since I have to have my ethernet cable plugged in to do so. Good ol' XP has never had any problems this severe.
- m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -10/+13Er....
OS X had transparent windows in the first version. The problem is that they really aren't all that helpful and users found that it made it harder to read the titles of all the bars etc that were transparent.
As for the rotating cube desktops, OS X has had that for a while with Virtue and Desktop Manager.
As for the wobbly windows... I guess, I personally don't really like it though, looks awefully distracting. And yeah, expose clone, every OS needs that ;) (too bad it seems Vista is totally getting it wrong... stacking the windows behind one another just make the problem just as bad!)
I do like XGL though, as I'm sure it will remove the horrible lack of screen buffering that cause things like Window tearing and slow draw speeds that have been eliminated in OS X for quite a while now ;)
Good for Linux though! I always love seeing progress, Ubuntu is shaping up great. I was really impressed by 6.06 - I hope that I can get it to Triple boot on my iMac like XP does with OS X. - KaosX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I havnt had any problems with wireless at all, except on my ibook.
NDISwrapper is your friend. - T-Bird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All I have to say...wow! This stuff is pretty neat. Gonna get Drapper downloaded and installed pretty soon here...guess I'll just have to get XGL installed right along with it :-D.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I got a AMD64 3200+, 1gb ram, nvidia 5900xt, and followed (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=148860&highlight=XGL) that guide. It's pretty nice, but my card is very flakey (locks up on XP and Linux if running at stock speeds) and videos are really messed up due to the inability to render video and the XGL pretties at the same time.
- mikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Use EasyUbuntu for installing the non-free stuff: http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah buddy, dont ditch the OS because of Firefox. SEARCH! I had many problems with Dapper Drake at first, but most answers were found by searching ubuntuforums.org
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well isn't that fabulous, it works for you. My IPW2915 will not work with Ubuntu using the IPW2200 settings. The Alps touchpad also won't work despite the tens or hundreds of hours I've spent trying to make them work.
- control98408, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Installed it on my Dell Latitude C400 when it first came out, got XGL working within the hour and it flies even with an Intel i810 graphics card.
- IMesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"btipling - just because you can't figure out how to use it doesn't mean it doesn't work... it works great for me and my friend's pc
as for the maximization - that just because you didn't configure xorg.conf correctly..."
You don't have dual monitors do you? Maximization works fine unless I have on XGL. I found a 3rd party patch that allows it to work fine except thats extremely buggy. And sorry but XGL just isn't mature enough yet, it is unstable. Just cause it works on you PC doesn't mean it works on others.
By XGL I mean Compiz, it's not XGLs fault for the dual monitor problem. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LAME!
Sound should work out of the box. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops and search through BBS to get something that trivial to work. - mdwvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very cool. I've been a fan of Ubuntu since version 5.4 (Hoary I think?). Linux is a beautiful thing. =) I have yet to check out the xgl desktop thing but I think now is the time.
- mk32066, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't get the isntall video to fully load, it goes about 1/4 of the way and then it just stops, anyone else having that problem?
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, how annoying of Apple. If only they would build it into windows. Then you wouldn't have to download it... so annoying.
