- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and I forgot to mention - on some older hardware, DSL seems to work with less "cheats" and problems than some of its larger cousins.
If it is a simple nail (basic file recovery for instance) - sometimes it is best to use a hammer rather than use the most expensive, largest (and slowest) power tool you can find.
If Knoppix or another live CD has issues booting - I try DSL, more often than not - DSL simply works. Not that I have many problems with other live CDs, but when I do... - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Dude who has a use for DSL any more?"
It is FAST. It fits onto a very small CD which can be carried without hassle or even much thought. I always have a DSL disc with me. It has come in handy several times.
"To run any of the better live Cd's out their (SLAX, KNOPPIX) the least you need 128mbs of ram."
Riiigghht. Run Knoppix on an old system, slow processor, and a motherboard that is maxed out at 128mb of RAM. No thanks - I have better things to do than wait that long. It can seriously be slow. Very slow. In fact, Knoppix is growing and now comes in a maxed out CD, or a DVD. Seriously - a live OS on a DVD is not meant for older systems, or much of anything that isn't relatively new for that matter.
On the reverse side of the coin, with 128mb of RAM I can use toram to actually load the WHOLE OS into RAM! Incredible speeds on ancient hardware, with moderately modern software.
"Any less and you need to buy some ram its so damn cheap."
Old RAM is getting to be more expensive than newer RAM - simply because it isn't made anymore. It is getting used up, and the price is going up. Besides, for basic use, do I really need to hit e-bay and buy more RAM to set up a box for browsing the web? No. I don't - thanks to projects like DSL.
"Most of the programs are weak and near useless in todays world."
A word processor, two graphical browsers (including Firefox), graphical file managers, so on and so forth. Useless? Then just open a shell. You have your basic or even more basic graphical environment and a decent shell. How is that useless? - ceekay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also- it ROCKS for doing Gentoo installations... having X with the bare minimum of other crap using memory is a very nice feature when you're compiling from stage 1.
- incynthiasdiary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pocket cds are great. plus i have a lot of old POS machines it has worked great on with messed up HDs
- ceekay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DSL has come a LONG way. It's the first place I go when a PC isn't working and I want to instantly test whether there is something wrong with anything but the hard drive or software. Running a LiveCD is a pretty effective way of eliminating memory/cpu/motherboard variables when troubleshooting.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IMO being the operative phrase........
I like DSL, not for a main box, but hey it's OK. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not only that, but stop complaining about it in the damn comments. We don't give a *****, if you care contact the admin, I'm getting tired of reading "why is this on the front page with only 35 diggs?" three to five times for almost every front page story.
PS: Damn Small Linux rocks! - jjafuller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The total number of diggs is not how stories make it to the front page. It has to do with the frequency of diggs. So, if a story is rapidly getting dugg in the "sandbox" it is promoted quickly

In a world where software companies are praised for creating the most bloated software with the most useless features, it's nice to see something you can run on an old 486 with 16 MB of RAM. Slax is better, but if you have a REALLY OLD computer, and you want a GUI instead of just a command prompt, this is priceless software. Not to mention, it's just fun to blow away at a box full of dust to reveal ancient hardware and then getting it to run something new. Brings back memories too! - SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Runs on a PMMX 133 with no graphics lag. While there are tons of better LiveCDs for modern, I love this distro for old computers. Computers that make great Internet shells but aren't worth spending money on.
- glycolized, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love DSL. It is a great distro to make an "internet machine" out of an old pile of crap.
- benliong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually used DSL for a quick embedded linux thingy I have to do for a project. We were given a 256MB CF card to work with and DSL is pretty much the only choice other than rolling my own. Works great.
- 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DSL is awesome if only because of the toram ability. Have a PC with no hard drive to perform... questionable activities, power it down, and you've got a fresh box with NO data on it.
- lbermude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Any less and you need to buy some ram its so damn cheap."
Have you try to buy PC100 lately? I couldn't belive how much more it was than PC133 - cmadach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Dude who has a use for DSL any more?"
it fits on a really cheap usb drive, which fits on my keychain. a cd would fit, but it'd bang into my leg when i drive, so it's not so convenient.
it can be run from inside a windows environment, knoppix can't.
but don't get me wrong, knoppix is super teriffic. DSL is the ultimate in portablilty though. - rafgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"its people with no socail life that digg these kind of stories"
So you don't like the article. That's no reason to baselessly insult those of us who do.
To be honest, on a CD, I'd much rather have Knoppix. That said, I guess it's time to update the OS on my DSL flash drive :-D - animeorb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i use it on pcs that arnet mine and it is awesome with the embadded if the pc is mine or wont load off usb
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DSL is a great accomplishment in OS software. To have what is has, in that size, is pretty amazing. But I couldn't imagine using it as my main OS. If you do basic stuff (multimedia, surfing) and have a low-end computer, then it's a perfect choice. But if you do more, i'd recommend a beefier linux distro.
- floguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0How come stories with such low diggs are being submitted to the front page?

IMO - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0NOOOOO DIGGGGGGG
