- aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't like pop-before-smtp. Use smtp-auth over TLS instead.
- nasalexport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why not use IMAP? you would think people with multiple computers would want this.
- alterself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1postfix + amavisd-new + spamassassin + clamav + spf + gentoo = awesome spam filter
(but hard to setup if you dont know what yer doing...) - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about XMail?
http://www.xmailserver.org
Works great for me. - reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use ClarkConnect. Easy to use and setup. Spamassassin works very well. Much better than setting up by hand which I did before I found ClarkConnect.
http://clarkconnect.org - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"For all the pansies who don't like to configure their mail server, or run their site - be warned. You'll get run over one day when you're ISP gets shafted."
right - cuz no one's ever gotten "shafted" when running their own ***** before when their 3 year old HD died in their crap linux box. everything has points of failure, and, actually, most ISP's are probably doing much more than most of us would to ensure that things don't get hosed. - edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it include all of the RAID, backups, redundant power, what to do if your home cable goes out type of things that running a mail server at home would involve? I would love to run my own personal mail server at home. But I *depend* on my email being up and running all the time, and put my faith in a dedicated host to handle that end instead of spending the resources to do it my self. I don't think the setup itself would be hard, its just the reliability part. Now, if I was running my own business server, I think I would definitly consider it. scalix.com anyone?
- alterself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i use this setup to protect my exchange box @ work, and run one at home as well (local delivery + xinetd, qpopper) cant get imap to work yet...

- FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, mail is definitely one of the hardest Linux services to get working the way you want it. And there's no single "popular choice" like apache or MySQL.
- pacmansyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about Truedesk?
http://www.mintersoft.com/truedesk/
You can have up to 5 address free of charge. Any more and you have to start paying licensing. Supports multiple domains and is much more than webmail - its got collaboration features and such as well. Works pretty well from what I've used. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1no wonder exchange costs money.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Use smtp-auth!
Neat anyways. - g_braad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Install FedoraCore, set postfix as the MTA, configure Cyrus IMAP (may be a little difficult for newcomers), upgrade SpamAssassin, install ClamAV and install Amavisd-new. And for added protection, configure postfix and cyrus to only accept SSL/TLS connections (and authentication for sending).
- spiralhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That looks about as fun as eating nails. Specialization is a good thing!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.qmailrocks.com/ is easy to follow and includes everything you need for a kick-ass mail server -- Qmail, courier-imap, clamav, spamassassin, and qmail admin tools.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OpenWebMail looks soooo much better than Squirrelmail. But for my old server, it was sendmail+clamav+clamavmilter+spamassassin.
- mAineAc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://qmailrocks.com easiest mail server I have built.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mdaemon for windows is great and easy, converted my pop3 to an imap, allows you to share a mailbox amongst other users, has public folders and contacts like exchange, even webmail.
w00t - aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0vpopmail + qmail is a crazy setup?
Load up qmailadmin and its a snap to manage, and quite versatile. - Berkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a big fan of CentOS running Webmin, Usermin, and Virtualmin to do some real easy virtual hosting. Point and click administration with sendmail running safely underneath. Just enable SSL for pop3 or IMAP in DOVECOT, and throw in poprelay (there is a special extra script floating around to accurately get IPs from dovecot) to secure up SMTP. And away you go! Throw in a dash of squirrel mail for extra flavor as the webmail interface in Usermin is a bit bland.
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why hasnt anyone mentioned Zimbra? You just install it and it does everything for you, it has a sweet itnerface too.
- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fedora Core 4 + postfix + dovecot + MySQL = unlimited domains/email accounts. Far easier to get going than anything else out there...
- Night201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another vote for ClarkConnect!!!
- Jimiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a Live Linux CD or Dedicated Linux install for just Email? It would make sense to have a distribution to just do Email / Spam / WebMail / TLS / SSL / IMAP and such.
- blazerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.qmailtoaster.com/ is all RPM based and totally administered by a web browser. Mine has been up a year solid.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Setting up sendmail and spamassasin and dovecot / ipop3 whatever you use, is not that hard, once you figure it out, its a snap, I had a couple servers running with web and email services untill bellsouth had to screw up a good thing and start blocking ports, and didnt bother to tell anybody, just did it. ISP's suck, and if your doesnt block ports, its only a matter of time. I had a dozen websites relying on that box, and a couple were Church's and Christian based websites, so you know what that means ... Bellsouth is going to hell !!! hahaha
- WorldBuilder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"My ISP (Comcast HSI) doesn't allow a server."
It does if you know what you're doing. ;) - jdeluise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In fact, most linux based mail solutions don't have the mail quota problem solved. Personally, I would use a combination of Postfix with Cyrus IMAP/POP3 as this is well thought out, and cyrus uses a pseudo-database format to store mail. Nice quota support, and you don't need to use shell accounts to recieve mail.
- mutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in defense of bell south, i'm sure it had nothing to do with your web server, but more to do with the large amount of "zombie" pcs out there that spam over port 25. you'd be very surprised if you could see some real world metrics, virus's and worms are insane -- so you have less spam because they block port 25, as do i
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ANOTHER vote for ClarkConnect..... anyone getting the hint yet?
- linker3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Almost as good as this series of articles:
http://www.hughesjr.com/content/view/40/2/Site_News
Punchmonkey: Check out the use of the 'virtual' file with postfix to manage multiple domains - very easy once you've had a good read - one of my mail servers covers 3 domains. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>A word of advice, don't ship with UPS. Packages get beat up pretty bad at their facilities.
That's *****, FedEx and UPS quality of service is about the same. Both are pretty good from my experience as a business owner.
Now...DHL, and Airborne...those 2 SUCK! Don't even get me started on the whole DHL driver spitting a big loogie on my porch story. - asyncra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found the combination of Postfix + Courier-IMAP/POP3 + MySQL + Postfix Admin to be the best. Postfix Admin is a great web based that sticks all of the settings in a MySQL database.

Jason - punchmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Slightly Offtopic:
Does anyone know of a (relatively) easy setup for managing multiple domains using a linux mail server? The only free/opensource solutions I've come across before require some crazy set up with virtual users such as vpopmail+qmail.
Right now we run an old mac with eudora which is super easy to manage but has lately developed a nasty habit of crashing twice a day. - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1come on...
this isnt even a news... - ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My ISP (Comcast HSI) doesn't allow a server.
- VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Now this is a cool digg. There is so much crap on Digg nowadays that there are days when I don't see a single story of interest. Sometimes TOO much information isn't necessarily better.
- lithite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0interesting, but it makes it very clear why so many it pros actually DO get scared away from linux-based systems
- Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0For all the pansies who don't like to configure their mail server, or run their site - be warned. You'll get run over one day when you're ISP gets shafted. Run your own stuff, and be self-reliant. If you are, you are stronger. If you cannot, then eventually you will run into problems. Ask windows users why they get so much spam...
What is Digg?
