so far you're all doing what he wants you to do - mannymix03, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13either your joking, you work for microsoft, or bill gates is your boy friend
- marix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12that was either a really ***** joke or a statment from someone completely unaware. either way go ***** yourself.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, a Linux-based hardware firewall (running on a real PC) is a hell of a lot more configurable than the $45 router solution.
But you're right. For 99% of people, the router is a far better choice. - sublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want WPA support in Orinoco, look for the drivers called "airlancer". They are a brand that uses the Orinoco chipset and the drivers worked great on my Orinoco Gold cards to add WPA support.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because this solution is going to be far more robust and reliable than any of your off the shelf home networking wireless access points. I've had linksys, netgear, d-link home access points all keep dying on me and requiring frequent resets and power-cycles. We have two Pentium-3 slackware linux machines serving as access points in my office, and I can't remember when they were last down because of a failure.
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2marix, chill bro...remember this is a site with a mostly tech fan base. Someone that uses and knows about Digg would know Linux is secure and a real OS. That has to be a joke, and its so wrongly exaggerated that its funny.
- kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I created my access point with iptables, by just creating a NAT and forwarding stuff from eth0 to ath0, that way i have full controll over the packets, firewalling, and clients, where i have a dhcp server on it too,, much better more effective
- sublime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Headline: How to build a 20 pound wireless access point for only $300
Why not just use a linux based router like the WRT54GL? It cost and weighs less, and has a smaller power supply. - marix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you should check my other comments. I've come to use the term quite a bit. Its just text, i dont think anyone is really angry or pissed off. I'm certianly not.
- WorldBuilder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Headline: How to build a 20 pound wireless access point for only $300

Because my 20-pound $300 (actually, when I built it, it was $900) "access point" can do (and does) so much more... Like be my file server, DNS server, database, web server, print server, domain controller, etc... Shall I go on?
However, your point is well taken for 99% of folks... - sark666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm considering getting a nintendo ds for wifi access with the opera browser once it's available. Is there any mention of the ds firmware being updated for wpa2 or will the ds always just have wep. Do any free hotspots typical use wep/wpa?
- WorldBuilder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I dugg you down not because you seemingly dislike linux, but because you're one of those people who are absolutely and blindly convinced that one thing is in every way superior to some other thing. All have advatnages, all have disadvantages.
Basically, your comment makes you an OS fundamentalist and that is altogether evil. Open your mind; after all, it only functions properly that way. - thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If Linux is "not secure" then Windows must be Open Source!!
See... I can be as funny as you! - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, I am extremely tempted to try this using my current xubuntu box, and finally get rid of my ages old Belkin router that only has WEP encryption.
Question is, I assume that all the other cards accessing the system must also be capable of WPA2? If so, am I good to go with my old but still outstanding Orinoco Gold? Because I don't thing that it supports WPA2, unless there is some firmware or drivers I can get to enable it.
Sorry for being a n00b, but I only starting messing with Linux seriously about 2 months ago. - MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2On another note, don't most common wireless routers run linux these days anyway?
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1marix, thats cool, i just hope i dont get on your bad side if you arent mad at someone and tell them to go f themself! :P
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1too naive a statement to be taken seriously.
- spudlyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good article. Dugg. I was a bit confused at first about 'hostapd' versus the 'hostap' wifi driver for Prism2 cards. Hostapd only handles the WPA authentication. I didn't realize that your that the MadWifi drivers would allow you to operate your wireless card like an AP, I thought you could only do that with Intersil Prism2 based cards (and the HostAP driver). I'm a bit dissapointed this article totally glosses over how to set up your card to behave like an AP -- sending beacons, and such.
Mike - JDines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0verucasalt made a simple error in haste. He meant to say that you don't normally see the words Linux, Security and Flaw in the same sentence. He reads so much Microsoft literature he forgot that security and flaw do not necessarily go hand in hand in an article's title ... ROTFL
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's a great Linux-based wireless access point...it's called OpenWRT.
- tehmoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, secure running windows only or binary only drivers on WPA[2] instead of IPSec, nice. Rather read the previous article @ http://software.newsforge.com/software/05/11/21/175249.shtml though the author seems to prefer openVPN.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2In other news, I'm selling sarcasm detectors on ebay. There's obviously a HUGE need for them.
- crazycracker, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6i plus digged you for the hilarious joke that is you

Hey, you missed my best comment, about the RIAA where I must have had dozens of replies from the "easily trolled" - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1sdfasdfasdf
- verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -51/+9Normally you don't see "Linux" and "secure" in the same sentence.
Maybe this is worth something, but I'd still rather see this implemented on a REAL operating system.
