- ryanharrington, on 12/10/2007, -10/+82Does it really matter, we are all going to customize it anyways!!!
- LucasVB, on 12/10/2007, -0/+55Hey, man! Here, you dropped these: a e
- sdubois92, on 12/10/2007, -10/+53Seriously? Brown? We all make fun of the zune for being brown and have no problem with Ubuntu.
- fatlip, on 12/10/2007, -0/+42ubuntu was brown first ;)
- Protoss, on 12/10/2007, -3/+45I thought they were going to abandon the orange/brown theme for Hardy Heron?
- Philluminati, on 12/10/2007, -9/+41half-way down the page are some concept pictures and I thought they looked *really* nice. In fact, I thought it looked ***** sexy.
- vln004, on 12/10/2007, -3/+32i really hope they reconsider the brown for something a little more 'neutral'. But whatever, i've never used the default themes for anything os.
- johnnykwest, on 12/10/2007, -2/+27Yeah, but users new to Linux (who they're hoping to attract) *will* judge the book by it's cover. Unfortunately IMO it's cover is starting to look very woody and oakey..and more like Microsoft Bob (http://ben.bacchus.com.au/vpcblog/images/msbob3.JP ... I like things to be distinctive but it's a little too dark and homey.
- CondoleezzaRice, on 12/10/2007, -15/+36PLEASE GOD STOP THE BROWN
- jbus, on 12/10/2007, -0/+20A more neutral version of the same theme would be perfect.
- ruhaanlp, on 12/10/2007, -7/+24if Hardy Heron looks like this i am prepared to use Ubuntu on all the Computers in my home
- akkibaba, on 12/10/2007, -2/+19So the guy wants to install Ubuntu (for whatever reason he wants) and he's already getting ridicule? This is supposed to bring people to our side?
- 35263526, on 12/10/2007, -7/+23That's stupid. There are hundreds of great themes on the internet, and all it takes to install them is downloading and then clicking a button in Appearance. You don't need to wait for the default theme to get better.
- P373Y, on 12/10/2007, -2/+18Curse you digg, you KILLED Ubuntu!
- whataboutdave, on 12/10/2007, -0/+16True, but defaults still matter.
- etandrib, on 12/10/2007, -0/+15I guess we'll never know since the server is not responding.
- DarkNemesis618, on 12/10/2007, -0/+14They should produce one theme with multiple color choices, like Microsoft does with XP...Blue, Silver, Olive.
I wouldn't care if brown was default, but allow for more color "sub options"
I guess it doesn't matter really since I customize it to look more like OS X anyway. - mglukhovsky, on 12/10/2007, -2/+15You sir, are a moron. Thank you for showing your complete lack of understanding of how the Internet works.
- samuelcotterall, on 12/10/2007, -1/+14I don't have the paper at hand, but when I was studying HCI I read something about gray and blue being ideal UI colours for their legibility and neutrality, hence their dominance in OS's of the last fifteen years.
Whilst Ubuntu has been, and I'm sure will remain to be, accessible I (and others I have brought this up with) find that the dark colour palette feels claustrophobic on a small screen. OSX (and classic XP, or plain old Gnome) always feels a lot more inviting and less oppressive - maybe it's just the fact that we have become used to a certain colour palette, but I find that OSX in particular allows the window itself to give way to whatever I'm working on. - samuelcotterall, on 12/10/2007, -2/+15Gray, accented by blue.
Take the Digg comment system for instance, until now I hadn't thought about it's colour because it is neutral. It's very 'classic' but it doesn't say 'Windows 98'.
Windows and OSX use a similar colour palette, but still look miles apart - you can do a lot with those two colours and still stand out. - TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/10/2007, -0/+12If I recall, ubuntu does include a fairly nice blue theme called 'glossy'
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -5/+16Yes, the concepts are nice but not the colors. I was hoping for them to make the default theme more neutral but those colors make the theme ugly. Let's see how this turn out.
- stoanhart, on 12/11/2007, -0/+11I must have the exact opposite taste from most diggers.
I love Ubuntu, and I like the current theme. In fact, I've started wearing more brown since I started using Ubuntu. Lately I've customized my Ubuntu to black and orange; when Canonical announced they were going that route for the next version I was pretty happy.
However, when I saw these screenshots I almost barfed a little. I was also expecting similar reactions here on digg, but apparently you guys like this! I definitely don't like these mockups. - DigitalDaiquiri, on 12/10/2007, -0/+11I'm a graphic designer, and although I can avidly appreciate the artwork I just absolutely hate the color scheme. When are we going to put brown behind us? Why not a nice black/grey/green combo that sets Ubuntu apart from OSX and Vista but is still considerably more visually appealing than the current Gutsy offering? In the United States color theory states that orange insinuates that something is cheep, and brown is too low key without something else to enhance it. Orange is one of the least enjoyed colors, and people generally tend to show disdain towards it. Black speaks sophistication, and green soothes the mind and stimulates creativity; both colors are enjoyed by most cultures.
- smackit, on 12/10/2007, -12/+22Loose the brown - its a bit 2003.
I don't just want my operating system to be informative in its design, I want it to look NICE and i want people to look at it and go oooh, cool.
Brown Does Not Do That!
Blue, all be it "M$!!!!" is actually a pleasant colour to work with. Please make Ubuntu Blue. - DemonWasp, on 12/10/2007, -1/+11I, for one, have never made fun of either for being brown, and I don't really dislike the colour scheme that Ubuntu has adopted at all.
Besides, if you buy a brown Zune, it's brown forever; with Ubuntu it's only brown so long as you leave it set to "brown" - it comes with plenty of other options.
Honestly, the bigger turnoff here was "baige". - DonCarcharo, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9Ahh, UI customization. Linux's biggest strength and it's worst downfall all rolled into one. Listen, a completely customized experience that provides no standardization of UI elements is a bad thing. It makes learning the OS (which most people equate to the GUI) extraordinarily difficult and creates a sense of fragmentation.
What the Hardy Heron team is aiming to do here is a good thing. Yes themes are great for advanced users but most people want consistency. To that effect, a standard default theme that looks good gets your OS in more people's hands. It's as simple as that.
That said, I'm not so much into having my UI look like a block of wood. Then again, glossy orange wasn't exactly my thing either. But while I may not like the results, I do still applaud their efforts. - WorLord, on 12/10/2007, -2/+10Let's not and say we did.
Blue is so utterly overused that its lost any appeal it may have had. This is why everyone is drifting _away_ from blue. Blue is so everywhere that nobody is thrilled by it any longer. It's the choice you make when you want to be safe, not sexy. Blue is the new beige: corporate, uptight.
And "earth tones" - i.e., brown - have been on the rise in the design world for at least the last few years. Makes sense to use them. At the very least, its nice to see an OS with warm tones instead of cold ones. - Cole2026, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8They'll probably revamp Kubuntu once KDE4 is "gold".
- puelocesar, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8Average users cannot change the color, they'll just look at it and say: "oh my, what a horrible brown thing!"
It would be good for Ubuntu if it can be beauty by default like OpenSuse and OSX - JiggNJive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7I like the looks of Ubuntu, it is "quiet" to the eyes. I think the new look might be even better...
- leodavinci, on 12/10/2007, -1/+8Well, I think that is more the manufacturers problem than anything Ryan. Nvidia is much more open about their drivers.
- fit4130, on 12/10/2007, -4/+10When I first installed ubuntu I ran the brown theme for a while, then it got on my nerves so I went blue. Blue is just a much nicer color that fits in with basically everything.
- se1zure, on 12/10/2007, -1/+7https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ...
wow, 3rd one down actually looks good.
this has to be the only theme or os design that I have seen for linux that is anywhere near likable. ALthough they really should have gone with a light blue or something, (hopefully you can adjust the color yourself.) - renegadeafk, on 12/10/2007, -1/+7This looks NOTHING like vista...
- Corrosionx, on 12/10/2007, -1/+7Everything you hate about Human, but worse.
- Cole2026, on 12/11/2007, -0/+5Its also the color of... uh..... trees, and chocolate. You gotta start thinking more colorfully...
- Flamekebab, on 12/10/2007, -4/+9It's not down.
- chroko, on 12/10/2007, -2/+7I love the brown / orange / eggshell tones. Rich, earthy colors.
At first glance it looks nicer than Leopard. (I still think that some aspects of the OSX desktop - including the dock - are fundamentally broken.) - TheRealToma, on 12/10/2007, -1/+6Ill be the first to say it then.... Thats an impossible theme in gnome. The software just doesnt allow for it. Nice try tho.
- jpwhitmore, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5I wish I actually knew how to program so I could contribute to Ubuntu. Looking at stuff like this just gets me all excited until I realize there's nothing I can contribute.
- SanDaiFez, on 12/10/2007, -1/+6The point is that people need to have a cool colour "out of the box". Brown is the colour of *****, ffs :D
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5I guess I should have posted the link with an anchor to the images
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ... - brasso, on 12/10/2007, -1/+6Just what does the year 2003 has to do with the colour brown?
- renegadeafk, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5isn't that one of the default gnome themes?
- CptnObvious, on 12/10/2007, -1/+6I'm all for making Ubuntu look nicer...but what about the forgoten step-child, Kubuntu? Sure it looks alright now, but it still could use a fair amount of polish.
- CptnObvious, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4That's a good point, I really hope there is more attention shifted towards Kubuntu once that happens.
- mapez, on 12/10/2007, -4/+8The theme is Ubuntu's biggest downfall. Not going to lie, it appeals to us geeks that don't really have an eye for style..
- byrdgang, on 12/10/2007, -1/+5Man, that's sweet! Looks really cool.
- sl123000, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4that sucks
